Consider me fairly clueless about the regulatory parts for this kind of stuff. Are people expecting the deal to go through at this point or not? (I mean, sensational headlines that make it sound like the it's a done deal aside.)
If people were absolutely certain it will go through, the stock would be at $54.20.

I think so. It's common for them to exist in case they're ever needed, but not common for them to actually be invoked.

You see, it IS possible to have this debate without it getting fucking political. It’s almost like I assumed this site was full of functioning adults rather than “political advocates”, and who were capable of having a discussion without bringing their personal politics into it.
Yeah. Started right around the time you left. .
Anyway, I'm a big "The rules are what's actually enforced" guy, and if posts like yours are allowed, I've been posting in the General categories all wrong this whole time.

I'm afraid that's incorrect. The grownup grin is de-facto one of the two Unicode points deriving from code point 2 in CP437. That, is neither of those, it looks like some sort of facsimile thereof. What is this "FA"? Fronté Algerièn?
-
-
@Gribnit unfortunately, Unicode being what it is, ☻ is considerably more difficult to type on my mobile device, while is much easier.
I would have to argue that is also slightly easier from a visual parsing perspective at least on the default Windows font rendering.

I don't care. Do what you want.
I'd like it if you didn't post thinly veiled shots at me in General or the Lounge. I don't chase you around WTDWTF doing that, and I'd appreciate the same courtesy.
If you're not doing that, you could make 1000 posts or you could make zero posts and I'd kind of be fine with either.
-
@GuyWhoKilledBear I don't want a pissing fight, I really don't. I come here like everyone else to vent a little, to point at the stupid in the world and light hearted shit posting.
The thing is, the only person who seems to have a problem with how I post is you. I have had only one time I can remember where I posted a general vent on a subject, and was asked to take it to the Lounge, which I did. And to my surprise the topic was fine, I'd even started to believe the Garage was less toxic than I'd remembered... until you arrived on the scene. So excuse me for having an issue with the fact that everything is fine until you arrive in topic. Because it's always you. Every single fucking time, it's you. I don't have any issues with anyone else on this forum. Just you.
I did try to block you so I wouldn't have to put up with it but then other people would quote you and I'd still have to see your posts and deal with the fallout of you sniping at me.
Now, if other people have issues with what I say and do - where they actually feel like something needs to be said, I'd appreciate it actually being said because I'd like an opportunity to improve.

Yeah, it's because you take dopey shots at me in the general categories.
I'm sure if you picked someone else's name out of a hat and decided to have a MASSIVE INTERNET RIVALRY with them and take a dopey shot at them in one out of every 10 posts, they'd be cheesed off too.
We've had perfectly normal interactions, including in this topic, when you're not taking shots at me. Maybe we'd have more of you took fewer dopey shots.
Just knock it off, man.

Since you asked for it, you might want to stop throwing around accusations of bad faith unless you provide the receipts.
-
@Gribnit Font Awesome. It's got icons you might need for your program, especially if your program is from 2012 (like Font Awesome) and whatever random computing device it targets may not have a gigabyte of color emojis built-in.
-
@antiquarian I hadn’t realised I had made a habit of that, thank you for telling me. Though there are times things can look in bad faith even if they’re not.
-
@Arantor As long as you guys stop picking holes in each other, and chill out a bit more, it'll be fine.
-
Just consider this folks: If you look at a quarterly report and it says "Company X has an ARPU of $25 per month in the US" you are paying someone at least $25 you would not otherwise pay or the firm would not exist. Yes, you personally might not (and everyone claims they're "the exception") but this is no more true than it is the case that you're always in the "top 10%" of whatever it is you do for work, for fun or whatever have you.
"ARPU" ... Let's see...
https://www.postbeyond.com/blog/revenue-per-social-media-user/ says:
-
@acrow the ARPU numbers are interesting, and of course in the end all that "free shit" you got for only being tortured with ads and pervasive tracking, you still pay for at some point at the cashier.
But that guy sure posts some ramblings bordering on lunatic.
-
@topspin said in In other hostile takeover Tweets...:
the ARPU numbers are interesting,
It'd be interesting to see a breakdown of where the $$$ comes from. E.g., some of the "social media" sites aren't just relying on ads and tracking, but also try to sell direct stuff (e.g. LinkedIn's plus accounts, or Reddit's rewards(?) system).
Maybe a distribution for the latter. Games-related things always talk about the "whales", where singular people stand for a significant chunk of the income...

Dunno. I've never heard them being a significant chunk of the player base. But usually they measure those things by count, not by total mass or volume.

Eh. If you copy-paste the text to notepad to get rid of the formatting, it turns into a normal angry-rant type of blog post. At least he explains his terminology, so I can actually make out what he's saying economics-wise.

I have one question, and trigger warning: it might be considered political
Is it even possible for Twitter to ever actually make money (you know, like a company is supposed to do, in capitalism)? And by making money I don't mean "oh, we've made $1M this quarter "; I mean it will actually some day pay all the money that has been spent.

In theory yes. Practically no. Subscription-based shit posting platform isn't bound to go well these days. Twitter Blue is trying, but it could really do so by taking away features from freeloaders; there's very little - if anything - that can be added that would be worth paying for. Might double down on slurp and ad-slinging, but that's really in the "woohoo " territory.

Doesn’t twitter have ads? The way everybody else makes a fortune, apparently.
I don’t know, I hate using twitter and I block ads.
-
@Kamil-Podlesak They have made money some years. but they were still some 5 billion ( $5 x 10^9 ) in debt before the Musk buy-out.

Musk says he thinks Twitter as currently constituted can't make money and he bought the site for ideological reasons.
He says if he changes Twitter's strategy for making money so that it's a subscription service (it's currently free with ads) it can make money.
But, he continues, even if it loses money, it's important for Musk's ideology to have the censorship policy Musk bought it to put in place.

Twitter also said it accidentally over-counted the number of monetizable daily active users because of a feature that allowed people to link multiple separate accounts together in order to conveniently switch between them. It counted those two separate accounts as two users for more than three years.
Well, that's why the board accepted Musk's offer lol.
Wonder if Musk is going to try to get a haircut because of this. Then again, he's already claimed he's doing this for civic duty and not money so it would look a little crass to hang things up over that restatement.

Defenestration is cheaper and more up to date, assuming you cannot accommodate any less final mode of dismissal due to your inexplicable yet unquenchable blood thirst.

Still not convinved he's going to honor the agreed upon deal. Might still try to either weasel out or manipulate the stock enough to "alter the deal" downward.
