Which means all they'll be left with are the people that are either a) not likely to find another place in those 3 months or b) not willing to risk trying to find another place in 3 months.
IOW you're keeping the people who can't or won't say no, which are the people who aren't usually the best performers. Not a smart move.
Though with the hiring bust in Silicon Valley positions at the moment, there's at least the possibility that the high achievers will feel stuck at this point and determine that they'll bite the bullet for now and keep their heads down.
I could also win the next $2bn lottery jackpot, but hey.
If they win the jackpot they can buy Twitter from Musk in a few months.
But why?
It's not arson if you're the owner. (In some places, you need to notify fire department first, though).

@MrL according to Tumblr, you should keep getting second opinions until one says you are.
Just tell the psychiatrist that you are active on tumblr and they will rubber stamp that diagnosis posthaste.

I mean, right now pretty much anybody can make up bullshit like that and it'll be impossible to know.

@cheong Screenshot please, or I can't read what happened.
ETA: For me it just says "Tweet removed".
ETA2: Tweet restored. Now visible again, assuming this is the same tweet:

Looks like it might be.

It hasn't, it's just Twitter being flakey. I've had that a few times over the last week or so.
Refresh and it'll load.

@loopback0 "Hey @elonmusk,
That cache-syncing microservice you had Tweeps turn off?
You might want to turn that back on..."
-
Apparently something like 75% of the staff have now gone after the hardcore email, and most of who’s left behind are the ones with visas.
Good jorb cutting them costs, Musk!

Wait, I thought U.S. companies can only fire their U.S. employees after fired all H1B holders the company sponsored, right?

They aren't firing them though. They are just making the workplace hostile enough that everyone with options are leaving

My hope is that in a few months time one could afford to buy Twitter without needing to have won the lottery.

@cheong Musk basically offered everyone a “stay and be Hardcore, or leave with 3 months’ severance”. So plenty apparently have taken this. Quelle surprise.

@Gern_Blaanston no, but for someone who runs large companies, this is rookie level stuff he should know better about.
Apparently, being the richest person in the world, and having the maturity of a 12 year old, is not a good combination.

Maybe. Still too soon to tell. People are going nuts right now but it'll probably die down once the novelty wears off and we get over the net neutrality levels of people dying.

Kinda hard to have security escort half of the staff at once.

Especially when the guy who was apparently in charge of badge access left and Elon apparently called to ask him to come back to help reopen the building...
(Not verified.)

However, it can still be a bunch of other crimes. Insurance fraud plus whatever crime setting a bunch of places near one you own on fire is.

Actually, it is. Burning down your home or business with the intent to collect on an insurance policy can result in you being charged with both arson and insurance fraud. (Law in the U.S. vary widely by state).
-
@Gern_Blaanston It's also a sure way to be barred from any insurance policy in your name afterwards.

Not sure this happened (nor do I care), still funny:
-
@topspin US employees got their layoff notices and were being paid, even though they weren't supposed to come into work. I'd presume Euros got similar treatment according to local laws.
So, yeah, their jobs were probably erased in that they weren't doing anything any more (as if they did stuff before?).
