Mixed it up today with PLANT/HERBS rather than PLANT/HERDS…

I had a feeling that B was more punchy than D so gave it a go.

Started out alright for the first few moved, then I messed up with HENGE instead of HENCE. But what really messed me up was GIVEN, I just couldn’t fathom what the hell that was since I only had the E in place and yellows for G, I and N, and in desperation went with GENIE to make something of it.

I feel like I want to start collecting the words to start doing analysis on the letter frequency, and also to build tools to try combinations for new opening words.

There’s science to be done!

@cheong Sometimes it does fail and doesn't properly black out words it should, which does end up very helpful. (As in this case.) Most times it is more of a challenge, although you can often guess from the formatting what kind of article it is. Like persons tend to have a very specific formatting at the start.

Hah. I avoided both those things.

(And I would have put CHILD first anyway) But I fell for CARER where it was CORER, MUDDY where it was DUMMY, ANGLE where it was ANKLE. At least this time I haven't fallen for the BUGLE/BULGE trap.

While I'm okay with my final result, things might have been much better (or worse, we'll never know) if I had trusted my instincts more. I've held back a few guesses early on, namely

CURIO, RIPEN, BITTY, AMBER, PRICK, WHINY, LIVID. Didn't even realize they were this many until I've started listing them!

First mistake was just unlucky, going for BUGLE instead of BULGE. The second was entirely carelessness, seeing the letters for SCION and knowing it has been uo before went for it rather than checking letter positions I’d already had which would have eliminated that in favour of the correct SONIC.

As for CHILI I’ve been caught out by that before so if I see that nonsense I start looking for some sign posting, e.g. another word with two L’s, or in this case another word with two I’s.

Gave CUTIE/GRAPH a go

I like it, will agree that it makes guesses 3-5 easier than others we’ve tried buuuut I hit a point around 8-10 guesses in where I had a lot of choices that I didn’t like. Building up a collection of things like _EAST, _OUSE (and what was clearly going to be _ATCH) and so on where you have a good number of possibilities and nothing to rule them out… doesn’t feel good. Too easy to run through guesses for BEAST/FEAST/YEAST/LEAST or MOUSE/LOUSE/DOUSE (as I already had HOUSE covered) or WATCH/LATCH/HATCH/MATCH (at least CATCH/PATCH were covered)

I think it’s a good opener but not sure if it’s just today was a grim day with lots of near miss words, though I was definitely lucky today. Will try tomorrow to see if it was a fluke on my part.

SHARE was a good second guess. Even though it didn't give me either SHARD or SNARE, it got me really close and the Es are super important in any case.

HORSY was a weird guess, but it gave me some good letters and pretty much gave me HUMOR on a silver platter.

I always try LEMUR and forget about FEMUR. :| But it helped me with LOUSE.

Good thing I had MOTOR to confirm the T before looking again at the first word, because that could have been GUESS.
Oh. If I had remembered QUEST was a word, I wouldn't have been so confident is was GUEST. G's a more useful letter than Q anyway. Oh, and there's another Q!

Darn BUGLE/BULGE. I'm not falling for that again! Same with the *ATCHes and *EACHes and *EASTs. Fortunately by then everything was falling into place: THYME, GUSTO, MAUVE, okay QUICK was a bit of a leap of faith, but the rest was fine.
