WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else

@LaoC There are a few isotopes of Pu; one of them seems to be a product from a Neptunium isotope, but don't know where that one ends up. There's probably a better way to do this, but tracking down the chains in the table that I had at hand is tedious enough to not really qualify as a sustainable procrastination activity.
-
Pop quiz! What's the half life of isotope 10Win?

After exhaustive research (i.e., a random Wikipedia page on OS installation statistics), it seems like the amount of10Win is still increasing, so it's not easy to estimate the half-life based on that (one would have to monitor an isolated sample). Estimating the half-life of 7Win should be possible based on global stats; I guess it's mainly that one that's still decaying into 10Win.

Google's announcement of moving away from APK comes a few days after Microsoft announced Windows 11, which lets you sideload Android apps as APKs.

@Applied-Mediocrity Akshully, Google isn't getting rid of APK, as the new AAB format is a collection of multiple APKs that can be selectively installed based on device configuration, to allow greater modularity and save on post-install storage space taken.
Whoever wrote that article is an idiot.

@Zecc Is your computer compatible with Windows 11? Does it have the required 2 cameras?

Well, at least they have stopped demonising smurfs with the screen of death moniker.
We at the PSA (Pro Smurf Alliance) welcome this change.
Back to some good old fashioned racism associating a screen of death with black.
Wait until the woke brigade hear about this.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity Well actually, the black is in the background. It represents normalcy. All the deathly communication is done in white.
I think we should call it the WTSOD instead.

It's 2021 -- why can't I choose what color my xSOD is? It would look much better if it matched the color scheme of the RGB illumination in my computer.

I can go to Microsoft Update Catalog, search for whatever version of Windows I'm running, sort the results by date and download the newest cumulative update.
In theory Windows tries to do this first, and after the latest cum update it then tries to find the next ones after that. This in an attempt to "reset" that exponential problem thingy so it only happens until the next cum update, which might be a "feature update" that really-really resets it.

In a July 21 livestream, Microsoft Program Manager Aria Carley answered Microsoft Tech Community users' questions about the final hardware requirements to upgrade to Windows 11. Although hardware requirements — including but not limited to TPM 2.0 support — aren't enforced for the Windows 11 alpha images available now, Carley confirmed that the "hardware floor" would be real for final versions.
Despite acknowledging that the situation "sucks" for affected users, Carley doubled down on the inflexibility of the hardware floor in response to a later question, saying "group policy will not enable you to get around hardware enforcement for Windows 11. We're still going to block you from upgrading your device... to make sure your devices stay supported and secure."
Unsurprisingly, these answers didn't seem to go over well with the audience — according to Windows Central, the video's top comment read, "A lot of these answers come off as super tone deaf... it's looking like Windows 11 will be another Windows 8."
Other comments speculated that the seemingly unnecessary hardware requirements are a thinly veiled ploy to push new computer sales, with corresponding boosts to Windows license sales.
Unfortunately, we're left to take various blogs' word on what the Microsoft Tech Community users had to say, because Microsoft disabled comments on the video — deleting all existing comments — in response to the negativity.

So to stay secure I should not install Windows 11. Noted.

Careful what you wish for!
Windows 10 may turn out to have been very good by comparison. And EOL'd as soon as 11 comes out.Prediction:
For the next 10 or so years, all games and GPU drivers will be built compatible with a very specific build of Windows 10 (in addition to latest 11). This Windows 10 version will be available as a VirtualBox image from torrent sites. The specific build will be whatever was the least buggy just before EOL (and could be patched to not phone home or nag).
All games and productivity software will be run from these isolated, virtual Win10 instances.

We'll see. I tried playing Half-Life on Ubuntu about a month and a half ago. I got stuck between the trolly's back wall and a fence gate during intro.
The problem in porting Windows games anywhere is, AIUI, that they all do spinlocks in user-space, which
isn't guaranteed to workjust doesn't work on Linux. It would need special behavior from the scheduler. Behavior which, I suspect, is triggered on calls of sleep(0) (or whatever the name was) on Windows.
-
Without that special behavior, animations and physics will lose step, and all kinds or weird behavior happens. Like you'd expect to happen when someone uses home-baked mutexes and semaphores. But Windows acted as a helicopter parent, and bent over backwards to keep shit from breaking.

Firefox has its shit together and sorts the default itself.
That’s what upsets Microsoft.
“We have been increasingly worried about the trend on Windows,” says Selena Deckelmann, senior vice president of Firefox, in a statement to The Verge. “Since Windows 10, users have had to take additional and unnecessary steps to set and retain their default browser settings. These barriers are confusing at best and seem designed to undermine a user’s choice for a non-Microsoft browser.”
Mozilla isn’t alone in its concerns, which it has been highlighting for years. “Microsoft has a history of doing this, and it seems they are getting progressively worse,” says a Vivaldi spokesperson in a statement to The Verge. “With every new version of Windows, it is getting harder [to change defaults]. They understand that the only way they can get people to use their browsers is to lock them in.”
