There are indeedMy Documents

@Tsaukpaetra you mean the fact that windows rather ate the music and videos folders than that it dare touch the cheese buns?

And most importantly, the Desktop folder, which (apparently) hold last year's tax file that was being searched for (the reason I noticed is said user complained they could not find it).

I also ran Windows 7 with Office 2010 from a 4GB flash drive. Why would you ponder asking such a silly question?
-
@Tsaukpaetra running Win7 off a flash drive is an order of magnitude less insane than running Win98 off a Zip drive. Surprised you didnât go full Jazz drive for hilarity points.

Back in the day, everybody ran DOS off a floppy, because that was all there was. Win98 is still DOS inside, but won't fit on a floppy, hence Zip.

Yes, but Win98 does a metric fuckton more disk access than DOS did just to keep running. I donât even want to speculate how painful it would have been.
I am old enough to boot off floppy, and I remember first getting a whole 20MB hard drive and being âwowâ about it.

In 1998 that actually ... sort of ... made sense. It was the equivalent of booting from a USB "thumb-drive" drive today.
Sometimes you just do what you need to do in order to get things done.

Speaking of Zip drives ...
Way back in olden times I had a drive made by a company called Syquest. It was exactly the same as a Zip drive, but the disks had slightly more capacity (120 MB instead of the Zip drive's 100 MB) and they made a unit that could be installed internally, like a floppy disk drive.
Cool! Got me some 120 MB disks. Unfortunately, the disks were complete garbage. They would fail and become unreadable fairly quickly and you could sometimes even get a brand-new-never-used disk that was unusable right out of the box.
Oh, the fun things we used to put up with.

I remember trying that with a USB key instead of Zip drive, just to see if it would work. It did (slowly, of course). Can't remember if I used a RAM disk as a cache.

Wiping and recycling a laptop this weekend.
had windows 10 on it from factory. had reinstalled windows 10 on it and it had proper trackpad and wireless support from the bare ISO.
secure erased the nvme drive in linux then booted up the windows 11 ISO because it's gonna be supported for longer and the laptop had SIGNIFICANTLY above minimum specs for win11
windows 11 did not have bundled drivers for the keyboard, trackpad and wireless.... menaing that i could not get the laptop online, because it only has one USB port and i needed that for the keyboard to get through the installer and i didnt' have a hub on hand...
so i had to create a local account and windows 11 does NOT want you to do that.....
like at all.
fuuuck that was annoying to do.
got to desktop and the keyboard started working but the resolution was stuck at 800x600 (or there abouts i didn't actually check... but it was tiny resolution), so i could plug in a USB ethernet dongle to get it online for drivers with just keyboard navigation.
first pass of windows update got me...... wifi, but no trackpad and broke USB
Second reboot and windows uupdate got me trackpad and usb back, but broke wifi.
third reboot got me, wifi, usb, and trackpad but no keyboard..... and in consolation prize apparently this laptop has always had a touchscreen but never had the windows 10 drivers for it?
fourth reboot got me a BSOD with impressive graphical corruption. in retrospect i should have taken a picture but i was too annoyed at the process to think to do that.
fifth reboot got me to the desktop after a BIOS update that took three hours and FIFTEEN REBOOTS to apply fully. all devices working and everything.
ran sysprep to remove the temp local user and get it prepared to donate and.... now OOBE has all the drivers and is running at proper resolution.
why did a laptop that had perfect drivers for windows 10 built into the install ISO have so much trouble with windows 11.....
ah well.... i'm once again down to a single windows device..... my work laptop, and i'd swap that for linux in a heartbeat if i was allowed to. but i'm not and i dont' trust it on my network so it goes wifi only on the isolated guest network with access to nothing but the internet and i access it via an IPKVM
but yeah. what the actual fuck windows 11..... how did you make the install process even worse than your OS?
-

-
@Zerosquare my reaction exactly. no idea why the keyb wouldnt' work in the installer.... but it's windoes, by now i'm not surprised.....
-
@accalia My desktop's new motherboard was to install for various reasons, one of which was the network card drivers being not part of the install media. The installer naturally wanted to download them off the network...

I have heard the same about Zip disks. I have, somewhere, a Zip disk with my college work on it, but no drive to read it and even less expectation that it would still be readable

I won't hear my beloved surface be besmirched in such a manner. It became great once I insalled debian on it.
it took me three attempts to spell surface. The cursor was over it and it looked like a doallar sign each time. I never should have stopped day drinking.

Setting up my home PC to auto-login like it does in Win10 doesn't work in Win11. Instead, I had to use a small program FROM MICROSOFT that will make the appropriate registry settings.Because Stop-Changing-Random-Shit-For-No-Reason is apparently no longer on option.
