Of course, is taking instructional screenshots on a work PC.

Have you actually ever used Windows?

@Gern_Blaanston touché.

Oh goody. Ads.

@Arantor They really want people to abandon Windows completely. If Valve gets their shit together and release general use Steam OS sometime soon, there might be a mass exodus of gamers.
-
@Carnage rumour has been doing the rounds that MS wants to buy Valve.

Of course they want to. They've been on a bit of a purchase and extinguish spree lately.

It seems to have evaporated :half-tro-pop:
(they had it 9 years ago and then somehow totally messed up the new version)

More worryingly are the people convinced it'll make Xbox better.

People are idiots. The XBox would possibly improve if MS sold it to Valve, because the problem is MS, not the tech.

who are also logged into a Microsoft account
There's an obvious solution to that problem. At least so far, I've been able to completely avoid ever creating or using a MS account (at least for personal; not so much at work, but that was a different job, and that account is no longer active). That may change if I'm ever forced to update to 11, but for now, and for as long as possible in the future, no MS account.

Most people don't care enough, and Microsoft know it.
Putting an ad there isn't even new. Based on that screenshot it's where the Microsoft 365 card already is.

On 11 it's possible on Pro if you don't sign into any of the services that require one, which you wouldn't - i.e. Windows Store, Onedrive, 365, etc.
For now anyway. I've also no idea how much it nags, or if it's possible at all on Home.

That would be very very likely to attract regulatory scrutiny...
-
Cue criticisms of how Win11 will break things installed long ago, by people who don’t know what they’re doing.
-
At least they're getting better at useful errors...
Windows 11 will respond with various error messages ranging from the helpful – "You can't access this shared folder because your organization's security policies block unauthenticated guest access. These policies help protect your PC from unsafe or malicious devices on the network" – to the downright obscure – "System error 3227320323 has occurred."
-
@Arantor What the hell is going on over there? Every part of that company is panicking and burning the place down as they go. Are they about to miss a quarterly earnings report?
-
@DogsB hell if I know.

Have you thought about, oh I don't know, finding out. I want a 30-slide deck and a 2000-word report I won't read in fifteen minutes.
I feel like a Microsoft executive now.
-
@Zecc well, I was going with the fact that NASes set up insecurely will break and the people who set them up will likely have no idea how to fix them, but your interpretation is perfectly accurate too.

You can't access this shared folder because your organization's security policies block unauthenticated guest access.
Now that's a fun message to get on a private PC which is not a domain member.

This is fantastic. I thought it was just images, but OCR is quite good now, so if you get all the images, that would be a problem. Nope. OCR is inbuilt! And with a DB of just the OCR data.
Who the hell sat down with this and thought they weren't building a giant security hole.
*edit You can't even disable it until after the windows installer is finished. They give you a checkbox to open the settings to disable it when finished though.
Bonus nodebb oddness.
-
@DogsB as per the article I linked, there is a group of users for whom this feature would be useful, it’s just not the majority of the user base. And the overlap of the people who genuinely want this feature (in concept) and the people who pushed it internally at MS is going to be basically a perfect circle Venn diagram.
But the people who said “build this” guaranteed did not think about the consequences of their decision. No guarantee they thought about anything.

It, however, happens to also be a group whom the associated security risks could bite particularly hard.

If you think that's fun, wait until your makes IT enable it on your work machine
