I can’t drag thingies to the taskbar from the Desktop. Or from the Start menu. Is my Windows broken?
NopeYes, they fucked that since Windows 10.Being broken by design means it's obviously not broken.

That does lead to a question, though: why now? What did they fuck up to break it now, when it appeared to be working before? (How do you end up fucking up character coding in 2021?)
That was the first thing I wondered. I assume that Cốc Cốc browser works OK in Windows 10.

Yeah, I would hope the fucking browser works in Windows 10...

that was somehow tied to critical functionality
Of course. What isn't tied to critical functionality? The first step to any bridge repair ever is to find out what workarounds need to be gently lifted to an alternative route.

Cốc Cốc browser (meaning "knock knock" and previously known as Cờ Rôm+, "Chrome Plus") is a freeware web browser focused on the Vietnamese market, developed by Vietnamese company Cốc Cốc and based on Chromium open source code.

Yeah we're in the "break everything" part of the patch cycle. Tune in next week for "Microsoft reverts patch" then after that, "Print Spooler bug still not fixed, say infosec experts"

To be fair linux has being crippling Intel for a couple years now so playing field needs to be leveled somehow.
Is there a windows 11 ltsc yet? It was the best version of windows 10.

So I don't even need to get Windows 11 to have access to Windows 11 bugs? Nifty!
-
@Zerosquare It's the same base platform, running most of the same services. I'd be surprised if something as basic as printer support were totally rewritten for Windows 11.

@Dragoon
Paging @Tsaukpaetra ...

With Windows 11, Microsoft has finally redesigned the modern Settings app.
The new Settings app uses a sidebar and breadcrumbs to help users easily navigate between different pages, and it also features new controls for customization, managing network, power usage, disk management, and more.
The settings app has been significantly improved, but several Control Panel features are still missing.
LOL, now there are three of them!

For example, you can create folder with the name "{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}" to open Administrative Tools, such as the defragmentation tool, disk format options, etc.
Uh. That sounds like an excellent idea.
In fact.
$ mkdir '{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}' $ touch '{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}/foo' $ git add '{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}/foo' $ git commit -m "lol" $ git push

It's not a Windows 11 feature. It's been there since XP.
-
@boomzilla I find it funny that the pożal się Boże "journalist" who made this article thinks God Mode is the official name of the feature and a necessary part of the filename.
-
@Gąska kurwa

@Gąska also how they didn't even update where it says "Windows 10" when they copied it straight from their own Windows 10 article.

Google translate doesn't even attempt a phonetic transcription. (The audio actually sounds fairly sane, though. Except for s->sh, nothing too unexpected, funny dots and squiggles notwithstanding. poh-zal she-eh boh-zeh I don't know how accurate it is, of course, since I only know one word in Polish.)

I thought about changing "made this article" in my post to "wrote this article" because it sounds better, but I wasn't certain how much writing was actually involved there. Looks like I made a good call.

{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}
: Windows 95 had something similar for the Control Panel, but not for the admin tools, since those didn't even exist in the Win9x branch.
-
@Zerosquare someone remind me on Friday, I’ll have to check some dead tree resources on 95 where I think I read it first.

Just playing around on Win10...
You need
md somename.{GUID}
When I just did
md {GUID}
, it just makes a directory named that.And putting 'foo' into the directory completely hides it in Explorer. (Of course, in cmd, that's all you see)
-
Another way (not tested with Windows 1x, but it works from Windows 95 up to Windows 7 at least) is to create the folder with a "normal" name, and put a
desktop.ini
file inside containing the following:
[.ShellClassInfo]
CLSID={GUID}

I just tried on Win10 (with the godmode guid). Didn't do anything. Changed .ini to hidden+system, still nothing. Closed/opened explorer window. Nothing. Didn't restart the full explorer process or login/out, because .

I'm still waiting for the Microsoft Printer to get installed first...

Just upgraded to Win11.
The first issue... how do I dock the taskbar to the left? I've done so since I change to these 16:9 displays. And for my current setup the wiring blocks the lower left corner so I'm unable to see the start button.

You might try Bring back the ability to move the taskbar to the top and sides of the screen on Windows 11.
Alternatively, get Start11 or something similar.

My system sometimes gets stuck like that (Dell). Requires a reboot to release it. Of course, all internet access still works fine.

(googles) FFS. You now have to edit the registry to put the damn thing back where it belongs - on the left. Let's see how long I can hold out...

I was told the biggest advantage of Windows is that you always have a GUI to change things.
Even if that GUI is often regedit
-
@TimeBandit the other big advantage is that even if the GUI is fucked you still have the command line. Including regedit.
-
-
@loopback0 oh unless you mean have the whole bar vertically on the left of the display in which case you shouldn't do that anyway and Microsoft is helping you be better people.
-
@loopback0 said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
That's for how the tasks are aligned on taskbar (default is centered like on XWindow or Mac), not what direction the taskbar is docked.
-
The real crime in Windows 11 is that there's only a clock on the taskbar on the main display and not secondary displays.
-

Humm... Better what?
Even if not talking about the wasted screen real estate, the wiring of my current setup blocks the lower right corner of the screen so I can't see the start button.

IME that's only true for things Microsoft really really really doesn't want you to do, but the Windows developers themselves want this option so they put in a backdoor. Moving the taskbar is exactly this kind of thing.
