@dcon TurnItIn only finds 80% similarity. Is that appropriate for a count of plagarism?

From what I've read about some of those term-paper checkers, more than enough.

They report some very odd numbers. Given that the average submission from a student will have 'Candidate number abc123' at the top, and by the third submission by the same student this line will be flagged as suspicious because it'll match the previous submissions by the same student, I don't entirely give them much time of day.
What I've been told by uni lecturers is that under 10% is 'I don't care', 90% and up is inevitably 'I sourced a fucking lot of quotes to support my thinking' and anything else is suspicious.

Also, probably.

I don't know, but I don't visit the non-public thread(s) where you have (reportedly) posted real-life representations of yourself.
Also, if you're starting to think you have a real life, maybe @Zerosquare needs to reboot you again.

To be fair, they were probably going to block it on the premise of not supporting the CPU anyways. This is just another excuse.

status I did it. I let the latest "Upgrade to W11 now" push happen. Still hate the we-know-better-tray-goes-on-the-bottom shit. But I swapped my 2 monitors so the portrait one is the main one - so tray-on-bottom makes sense there. So far, my files (and options) are just where I left them...

Give it a few reboots. You'll be craftily beguiled to move your shit into OneDrive, which by default has a limit of 15gb. If you accidentally the thing, you'll be scare-wared into buying a subscription because suddenly your files are not "safe". Complete with nag notification, natch.

Mystery Solved .... and it's even more retarded than I thought.
The actual version number of my Windows 11 is ....
Not only is Microsoft afraid of the number 9 (i.e., no Windows 9) they are apparently also afraid of the number 11.

I can't remember what the first one is.

Status: If it weren't for the fact that Azure Active Directory (faka "Entra") joined devices are effectively "Workgroup" style (i.e. don't talk to normal domain controllers, can't register into DNS as a domain-joined device, etc), I would almost like them.
Too bad, had a chance and it was blown.
-
Microsoft isn't even pretending we're not beta testers now:
Saw a weird icon suddenly in my taskbar. No, I'm not on early releases/etc. (It's only hit one machine so far)
-
Status: What a shitshow.
The laptop from my customer is Win 11. Used to be, I could login to the VPN before logging in. Then I'd login to the machine / domain and stuff (Outlook, Teams, etc) would start up and I could get on with stuff.
Now, I can login to the VPN before logging in, except that session goes away once I login to the machine. So I get lots of popups from Outlook and Teams about how I can't see that stuff. So I open the VPN (Cisco Anyconnect) and it sits there spinning saying that it's connecting. For, like...ever.
Eventually, I notice something on the taskbar that doesn't look right. Oh! It's the Win 11 smartcard PIN prompt! Helpfully opened behind all the open windows I have (which each have several modals open telling me I'm not authorized to see stuff when not on the VPN).
I know I've bitched about the brain dead PIN prompt before. This VPN fuckery is new to me, though. They're super awesome combined, but I guess that's the best you can expect from a small company like MS.

They're doing their best. It's hard to make things take focus for urgent matters, even for the OS.

It always does that. Well, I haven't used Windows 11, but it does on Windows 10 and I always miss the damn thing and don't know what's going on.

Every time I start "Phone Link", it always pops up behind everything.

Oh, yeah...until recently my company had a 3rd party thing...uh...ActivClient?...something like that. It is smart enough to pop up. But that was just uninstalled from my Win 10 machine this week for some reason and now, yeah, I get the native dialog, though it doesn't seem to popunder as aggressively as the Win 11 version.

Displaying something in front of other windows is reserved for really important system messages. You know, stuff like "you haven't subscribed to OneDrive yet? What's wrong with you?!"

- Last night got an update.
- Today, click on Paint icon to paste a screen capture
- Pop-up window with "Paint was removed: go to the Store to get it"
- close message, open forum to post
- click the icon again to see exact wording: Paint starts.
What was that? Now it auto-installs from the Store?
-
@cabrito said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

Yes, and the same goes with Notepad.
-
Oh goody, more reason not to downgrade to 11.
-
@Arantor I'm still in doubt whether I should install my new PC (to arrive soon™) in MBR mode (which blocks the win11 migration) or in GPT mode (which will auto-update at microsoft's convenience).
-
@PleegWat said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
MBR mode (which blocks the win11 migration)
Disabling TPM should also do this.
-
@Tsaukpaetra And that's probably easier to migrate back in if needed. Thanks.

So, against my better judgement I let myself be lured into installing windows 11 anyway.
It is possible, with some hassle, to get windows 11 to let you not have a microsoft account.
However, if you are using an existing non-hardware-locked license key, it will not activate. Registering a pre-used license into the motherboard can only be done if you have a microsoft account.
I really do not want a microsoft account.
