**Status:**Isn't capacity supposed to be larger than formatted?
-
@Tsaukpaetra maybe they reused some floppy disk technology and it's Double Sided, Double Density - explaining how the formatted capacity is double the capacity because it's double density.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Not such a wild difference. On ebay and such places you can get disks with much more formattted bytes and enormously less capacity bytes...
-
@Tsaukpaetra Could it be that it's the controller (and not Windows) which reports the bogus value, because it's a hybrid (see: shitbird) drive?

I'm going to blame Windows, though I do still have several TB togo before the verification is complete.

@Gern_Blaanston is replacing Chrome with an equally shitty version of Chrome.
I did install Edge on my Android phone not long ago. It kind of sucks, but... Science must be done.
Findings (other than it sucks, because everything does):
- It has the settings and tab control at the lower side of the screen. Easier to reach with one hand.
- Not sure how well the built-in ABP works.
- And then there's the stupid Share button that can't be removed and the perpetual "plz set me as default" banner.
I’m trying to degoogle and demicrosoft my life at the moment. It brought me no end of annoyance that my mother prefers Edge.
On the google front I’m basically down to email and youtube. I’ll never lose the email. I have to check it once a week just in case an automated email comes in and I have to switch the email over. That and recruiters. Youtube because basically everyone is there and I can’t find them off that site. I’ll have to make a decision about that soon. Also lineage os for burner phones but I can live with that.
Microsoft was actually easier except for my gaming handheld. Gaming on linux is almost there but not quite. Email, same as google but office and onedrive was easy enough. I’m going to move my surface off this weekend and see what happens. Then on to my gaming laptop and handheld.
I’ll probably have the office subscription forever. The rest of the family is on it. They’ll never move. If microsoft didn’t go the ad route I would probably still be there. That and god-awful ui and notification design.
-
@DogsB Good for you, o' freedom warrior
I can't be arsed anymore. I've now removed Edge, though (precisely because I couldn't be arsed to switch)

Edge on Android: You mentioned that Edge has some features that make it easier to use with one hand due to the settings and tab control being located at the lower side of the screen. However, you found some issues with the built-in ad blocker (ABP) and the annoying "Set as default" banner, which can't be removed. It's understandable that these issues may detract from your experience with the browser.
Degoogle and Demicrosoft Efforts: It appears that you're actively trying to reduce your dependence on Google and Microsoft services. You've managed to minimize your usage to email and YouTube for practical reasons, such as automated emails and recruiter communication. For gaming, you are finding it challenging to fully transition to Linux due to compatibility concerns.
Microsoft Transition: You mentioned that moving away from Microsoft services was relatively easy, except for your gaming handheld, where gaming on Linux is not fully on par with your requirements. You have already migrated your email, Office, and OneDrive services away from Microsoft, with plans to move other devices away from Microsoft services as well.
Office Subscription: You intend to keep your Office subscription due to family usage and preference, even though you're unhappy with Microsoft's ad route and user interface and notification design.
-
@Miters-Frigers you find yourself questioning if the effort is worth it. You decide that history is written by the victors. You take solace in the idea that even so, your memory will persevere in the heart of the clouds.

@mods The bots are loose again!

@topspin the mods were sceptical before about this one, but it seems their scepticism is well founded.

@Arantor Yeah, this one is special.
It seems to summarize posts, but in this case, it summarized @DogsB from 189 words to 209. More letters too. And probably less alcohol.
So, all in all, worse than the original.

That sounds like an horoscope for people with weird astrological signs.

@cvi the current Gen of bots does seem happy to be more verbose. Maybe they got some of my posts in the training data somewhere.
If so, $deity help us all.

@Arantor It took three posts until the bot dropped the first spam link. (elsewhere. Someone flagged and was taken care of it). I was hoping it would have provided some entertainment in the interim, but I have been seriously disappointed. :/ I'm too trusting.

Day #2 of trying to move from Windows 10 to Windows 11 on my main desktop computer. Finally got things wrangled into a usable state (for certain values of "usable").
-- There are a lot of things that are the same as Windows 10.
-- There are a lot of things that are worse.
-- There is nothing that is better.Microsoft has essentially turned Windows into Linux.

@Gern_Blaanston This is why I continue to refuse the W11 "upgrade" for W10 on my desktop, despite the fact it's getting slowly more and more in my face about it.

Microsoft has essentially turned Windows into Linux. These statements are contradictory. If Windows were to be turned into something sufficiently similar to Linux, some (certainly not all) things would improve. If nothing has improved, it cannot be essentially Linux.

But... why?
@Gern_Blaanston said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

Well, what did you expect?
-
@HardwareGeek no, what's happened is that Windows is now - from the outside - functionally indistinguishable from many modern Linux distributions.
-- There are a lot of things that are the same as
Windows 10the last major version / the latest version of the other ones.
-- There are a lot of things that are worse.
-- There is nothing that is better.Windows to Linux is not really much of an upgrade if you're hitting the mainstream, and the people who were already on Windows aren't the people who, typically, want to fart-ass around on Linux anyway.
Upgrading a distro's LTS to LTS though... really really is as above.

I strongly disagree, there is a lot of outside difference. I guess you could say it's functionally indistinguishable if all you do is browse the web, but then macOS, iOS and Android are also functionally indistinguishable.

Linux finally caught up? Year of the Linux desktop soon?
-- There are a lot of things that are the same as
Windows 10the last major version / the latest version of the other ones. That's a good thing for an OS. Some change but a lot of things the same. Changing everything on every major version would be ridiculous.

-- There is nothing that is better. These are subjective so everything is as above, and everything is also not as above.

I must live in crazy world. Windows 10 and 11 have been radically better, more stable, and less of a pain to deal with than either MacOS (does all the wrong things and is opinionated and it) or Linux (used mostly in the server environment).

They're all just as good or bad as each other IMO.
-
@Benjamin-Hall better is subjective, apparently some people like their ads, but Windows 10 being more stable than macOS or Linux?
-
@Carnage functionally indistinguishable for general use without worrying about the details.
As in, I had a cycle of running Ubuntu LTS to LTS (so, 16.04, 18.04, 20.04), as well as major MacOS versions as well as Win10. Bear in mind I'm a web developer across all these, which may skew my perception a little - and I'm not interested in tinkering away at a thousand fucking settings to 'get the experience I want' because I've been there, and I know any time investment I make will inevitably fuck up down the line.
The changes between Win10 to Win11 are not 'radical' but they're various flavours of annoying changes to workflow that didn't really need changing either - which is exactly how my experience of both MacOS and Ubuntu stack up, that shit gets changed for no reason other than someone thinks it needs to be changed and... usually I can't change it back.
Change for change's sake irks me, and desktop Linux is doing a pretty good of emulating that from what I can see, and I have neither the time nor patience to squirrel away how to undo it. Like... yes I can install this desktop environment and I can install those packages... but I just want to use the fucking thing. I'm not 18 any more, I don't have the spare time or patience to experiment and tweak every little thing because I can.
I almost want to go back to the time when Linux was a pain in the ass to set up because once you had it set up and working, it wouldn't change on you. Probably because it was that much of a pain so you left it the fuck alone.

I can't remember the last time my windows machine (a frankenputer that has been upgraded from 7 to 10 to 11 without full reinstall) crashed or had to be restarted (other than updates). The personal Linux server I administer... Not so much. And don't even get me started about my work MacBook pro. Which wedges something sideways every week or when and a half. And needs constant maintenance, as every little point update breaks almost everything.

Mine only needs restarting for updates or because AnyConnect shits itself. No other maintenance required
My work Windows desktop and various Windows and Linux servers also only need rebooting for updates.
