WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else

@topspin said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
@Tsaukpaetra that's been there for awhile. No, it additionally shows huge-ass popups everywhere, etc.
Can't wait, I haven't experienced that yet in my ("You're up to date!") version yet.
-
@topspin QFT, all of that.
Powerpoint too. Select text, start typing, "Oh hi, this font doesn't exist", because focus went into tthe text field of the shitty popup. Alt texts for images too. I get why you'd want them, but the auto-generated texts are utterly useless. (But I simply marked all my images "decorative".)
Seriously considering switching to LaTeX+Beamer. Sharing slides with other people is overrated anyway.
Office.

@Tsaukpaetra it looks like it timed out on a successful action. For some reason they don't plan for that to happen...

Off-tangent rant: It opened countless stupid and useless pop-ups
Well, they removed Clippy. So they had to implement something to replace it, you see.

I meant the browser version, as I've not seen any of that stuff in the app version although maybe I've turned something off.

I'm sure they'll release a package update to fix that for those who need it...

Status: This particular user is encountering a highly repeatable issue, in that the screen instantly locks after being unattended for about 1 minute.
This of course, despite that all settings (screen saver timeout, screen off timeout, sleep timeout, etc) are set to 6 hours (confirmed and documented in the ticket).
I checked and there are not apparent utility programs that could be forcing the issue
GG Microsoft...

Even Windows can't stand seeing that user's face?

I get this sort of error with some indie games I keep on an external drive that Windows likes to spin down since you haven't used it for 10 seconds or so. When you go to save it'll lock up the game because it doesn't respond in milliseconds.

How can this be so wrong?!

It's not like it's a core function of the UI, so it doesn't matter that it's broken.

Surprised they haven't just turned it into a Cortana button..... Oh wait, that's probably why it's broken in the first place! 🍩

I can't even activate cortana here in commie land, because it's probably running afoul of privacy regulations.

-
@Carnage Eh. IMO you didn't miss much.
Then again, I never really got why I'd want to talk to my computer rather than type stuff (with very few exceptions in specific circumstances).
(Third, voice recognition typically sucks for me anyway, considering I'm not a native English speaker.)

That still involves talking (and presumably both on my part and the computer's).
Unless shutting it up involves the power button. That I can get behind.

@topspin ooooh, technically, this should be in the equivalent Windows 10 thread.
But then I doubt it’s gotten any less retarded, so it doesn’t matter.

Everything in Windows is running afoul of privacy regulations. It’s still used even by government agencies, so obviously nobody cares.

@Gern_Blaanston Replacing one kind of broken with a different kind of broken will fix nothing!

So my work laptop finally decided that the 22H2 update should be available. Which I discovered after logging in this morning. Which took ages because it had updated and rebooted during the night. But it had also failed to install a couple updates. And hitting the retry button made it update the Updates list and find another big update to install. So now it's downloading and installing that. And then it will need a reboot. And then maybe I can install the 22H2 update. And reboot. And update. And reboot. And update.
-
@Atazhaia But don't worry!
(emphasis obviously mine)
We've integrated .NET Framework updates into the Unified Update Platform or UUP-based feature update. Moving to Windows 11, version 22H2 via Windows Update will now automatically help secure your device with the latest .NET Framework updates. You'll now experience one less reboot!
-
@Zecc So it'll now be ∞-1 reboots?
In other news, I left my computer for a bit and it had downloaded 33%. Then I checked a minute later and it had downloaded 0%. And a minute after that it had downloaded 6%. Progress?
-
@Atazhaia Yes, it's progress. It could just abandon the first download, because it learned that a newer version of the update was available.
That does not look very microsofty. I'd rather expect it to complete the first download, do the update, and then do the same with the newer version of the update, thereafter ...
-
And after it finished installing 22H2 it found another set of updates for 22H2, and now it's finished. For now.

Need to change Windows Defender settings because it deletes legitimate files as "malware". Attempting to access Windows Defender to change settings results in:
There is no "new app". This is a bug in Windows 11 and the Powershell command recommended on the Interwebs does not work.
Fortunately, I already hate Windows 11 for lots of other reasons, so going back to Windows 10 is an easy decision.
Thanks Microsoft.

It took my Surface tablet four update-and-reboots this month before it decided it was out of things to update. It was already on 22H2.

On my last update (win10), I was watching it download 4 things. And then it showed nothing and was "done". Hitting "Update" brought them back (after the usual search). For a bit. I think I finally got them all...

Oh, that reminds me, I forgot to tell you guys this story!
I was in the train recently and the guy in the seat almost next to me was a 50-something middle manager (probably some sort of ), writing emails on his tablet-computer (no idea what it was exactly and I don't care). You know "let's go ahead with this project, keep me posted about the evolution, I will attend the next meeting."
Except that he was using voice dictation. In a crowded train. One broken sentence fragment at a time. With the voice assistant on/off sound each time. And correcting whatever it typed with one finger typing.
