Is it currently worth taking a working Win10 setup to Win11?
Depending on your workflow, there are 3 possible answers:
No.
Hell No.
Fuck No.

@Arantor I really don't mind it (other than I'm on of those put-the-bar-on-the-left people - well, technically, it's put-it-on-the-short-side, so if the taskbar ever ends up on my portrait monitor, it'll be on bottom). Once I figured out how to change a couple options.
- Cmd is still my preferred shell - I haven't made the move to PowerShell yet - that one took a little to figure out (it's in the settings panel located off the drop arrow (which is next to the '+' for new tab) on Terminal)
- Centering processes on the taskbar. NOPENOPENOPE. But there is a setting to move those.
Other than that, I really haven't noticed much of a difference. (tho moving a window to the top of the screen can be problematic because a "helper" thing jumps down to arrange windows - that can probably be turned off, but so far I've been on that)

It can - either the snapping thing can be turned off entirely or the thing that appears at the top can be turned off on its own.

overcome. Setting changed. (I just searched for 'snap' in Settings - it's in System->Multitasking)

Status: IT pushed the 22H2 update to my work laptop.
The CPU fan has not stopped whooshing for takeoff for the last two hours.
I think it will prompt me to reboot sometime Soon™️.

I ended up turning that off too. I like the edge-of-the-screen
AeroSnap and its add-a-window friend, but I don't want a big overlay popping up when I'm just trying to move a window around.A similar thing will pop up if you hover on the Maximize/Restore button on a standard window.
ObTopic: I think the highlights have been hit. Windows 11 is an evolution of Windows 10 with some UI changes one might find annoying. Put the Start Button back in the corner, turn off whatever extra Taskbar junk you'd turn off on Windows 10, do a quick registry edit to get back the full Explorer context menu, and you're probably fine from there.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one...
reg add HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32 /ve /d "" /f

See, that's why Linux will never be ready for the average Joe. You always have to edit some config file or type some obscure command to configure things.
At least with Windows, there's always a nice GUI to do it.
Oh, wait...

@ChaosTheEternal said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
I randomly had my system just shut down hard, no blue screen or anything, and would shut down immediately after BIOS (right when the spinner for Windows would show).
And a month later, this basically happened again.
Noticed I had a Windows Update queued (I assume it was some 22H2 shit update or whatever) so I went ahead and let it run, system restarted, and when I logged in, the hardware monitor software I use popped up and said the CPU was at 90°C and started raising. Kick on Task Manager, CPU was under 5% load and not throttling down, CPU claims it was at 95°C and then poof, the computer turned off.
I waited a bit and tried to turn it back on, it got to BIOS, then shut off like before. Went into Windows repair stuff, I didn't get the same restore option, so I tried reverting the update, it went for a bit then shut off again. Went back in again, tried to "repair problems preventing startup" and it went for a bit, then shut off. I gave up, unplugged the bastard, then spent the rest of my night without a PC.
Brought it in to work this morning and had my IT co-worker try to assist. He hooked it up, turned it on, it got to BIOS, then says "repairing PC" with the Windows spinner like the previous thing just couldn't do it in one cycle, then finished and restarted. At that, it then booted to desktop.
I guess the fucking thing wanted to go on a road trip or it just wanted a hug. The only thing I changed, at recommendation of my co-worker, was to turn off Fast Startup, so hopefully this damn problem stops happening.

You should reapply thermal paste. Seriously. Yes I know what you said before. Do it. For Her.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

I didn't apply it in the first place, and if I would actually have to, I'll probably have to get some help (anything regarding the CPU I hate doing).
And when it was actually booting at work, it was back to normal temperatures, so I doubt it's the thermal paste. I assume the wild temp was some stupid shit with rebooting/Windows update fucking up the state and not it actually getting that hot (especially since the AIO cooler wasn't radiating any notable heat and also didn't ramp up the fans).
-
@ChaosTheEternal Windows telemetry is a good candidate for runway CPU consumption.

You think the thermal paste will lower the friction of the electrons going to and fro in the innards of the processing unit?
-
@BernieTheBernie That's not where you normally apply thermal paste. (But if you're really into that ... not judging or anything.)
-

No, it decreases the friction of the intermeshing plates, which allows higher planke coefficients when fridjugating the thermal transfer particles, resulting in greater transfer capacity while keeping the transfer rate moderately comparable. The carrier electrons cannot violate the laws of physics.
