Is it mandatory to have a smoke detector in your kitchen? Here it's explicitly advised against, precisely because of the false alarms (heat detectors are the recommended alternative for kitchens).
However it's convenient when you and your colleagues somehow decided to have hotpot in conference room.
There was a TV comedy series that one of the scenes is a group of office staffs needing to work overnight were having hotpot in their conference room, triggered the smoke detector, and everyone got water sprayed by sprinklers on the ceiling.

@boomzilla The same could be said of various -isms and the institutions that nominally exist to eradicate them.

@boomzilla fwiw authentication code 1 for trust level 1 (AFEBB01AA3) is only known to those that know what it is. So, in a way, it works exactly as intended.
-
If you type your authentication code for trust level 1 it comes out all ***s:

@hungrier my auth code for that is so secret I don't even know what it is.

Ah! You forgot to use this utility: Asterisk Password Spy 9.0
It's quite useful...

Can they? My understanding is that hair don't fossilize - you can get impressions of hair/feathers in something, but not actual fossils of them.
-
@MrL I thinking you're just splitting fossilized hairs there.

That’s not really different from what happens with bones.
Seriously though, an “impression” of something is literally a fossil. Whether that’s because it mineralised, was replaced by another mineral, left a mould or a cast, is immaterial. Fossil bones are rocks, not actual bones.

@Zerosquare If you're free of sin(), does that mean you've flatlined?

There is a restaurant nearby called Topp Subs and I have a chuckle whenever I pass it.
It was probably deliberate. Like Rusty's Tacos or Fuzzy's Tacos (both real establishments).

As opposed to fossilized hares.

No, the other feature - it's from the same lib that masks the passwords.

When I was in middle school, I used to wonder - there are cool kids and uncool kids, right? But suppose all the uncool kids agreed to think of themselves as cool, and to make fun of the currently-cool kids. Then you would just have two groups of kids, each considering themselves superior and looking down on the other. And the currently-uncool-kid group would be bigger and probably win, insofar as it’s possible to win these things.
Then it goes on to quote a book about Richard Nixon and how he did pretty much just that in college, which he kind of also did later on to become President.

@Gribnit You're missing the "in Java" part. As a real dev, whenever I see "in Java", I shed a tear for the poor souls stuck writing that.
Filed under: At least it didn't say "in Javascript".

Scala is basically Java so it definitely compares.
