I moved your cheese - Megatopics

Let's try out a quick experiment over in the Sidebar category: a Megatopic subcategory.
The main purpose of this subcategory is to visually segregate years-old megatopics, particularly for new/casual users. And because it's the Sidebar, this will have the added benefit of making the Sidebar on the Front-page appear more active; currently it's mostly been the same set of topics for the past few years.
While this new subcategory is exclusively visible to registered members, only moderators (i.e. me) can create topics. This means that some lucky topics will be selected to be "promoted" from the Sidebar to it's megatopic subcategory. I will make up the rules as I go along, and will try to come up with a less-arbitrary set of guidelines for when topics should be eligible for promotion.
I'll promote a few of my favorites soon; my hope is that this won't impact the regulars browsing experience at all; notifications ought to still work, and topics should still appear as they did before.
-
@apapadimoulis I'd say "General" is more fitting than "Sidebar". Or just make it a top-level category due to how special and all-encompassing it is.
-
@Gąska that could work, though I was also thinking of a Megatopic subcategory for General as well; depending on results and how we open membership for new trollybus mechanics, we could try it in the Garage too. Other categories, including lounge, isn't quite flooded with Megatopics so it's less visually distracting
-
@apapadimoulis NO NO NO PLEASE NO MULTIPLE MEGACATEGORIES!!!!!
(We really don't have that many megatopics. 10, maybe 15.)
-
@Gąska well that seems like an awfully extreme reaction.
I didn't count the topics, but what am I missing? How would this change the browsing/using experience?

My programmer's soul just hates needlessly big hierarchies, that's all. With too low topics-to-categories ratio, categories cease to be useful.

@Gąska or in other words (or an emoticon):
Good answer. Perhaps, the best answer, and the best reason not to.

Actually, it's more of an obsession or a pet peeve; a very strong personal preference about something insignificant. Pedantry is about being extremely strict with the rules, or as used on this forum, with definitions, kinda like I am right now.

@error even your bot agrees with me!

Emoticons are punctuation marks, letters, and numbers used to create pictorial icons that generally display an emotion or sentiment.
Not to be confused with their predecessor, emoji are pictographs of faces, objects, and symbols.

Filed under: That bitch Carole Gaska.
This is like the 3rd time recently there's been a post on how to pronounce @Gąska. Soon we'll all know but all keep pronouncing it gaska anyway.

And we have become exceedingly efficient at it

@loopback0 really? Wasn’t the last one about pronouncing his first name?

Also that, but there's been more than one about pronouncing Gąska. I remember making similar replies about knowing how it's pronounced but continuing to pronounce it incorrectly anyway.

Some topics are more mega than others.

@boomzilla Meanwhile the cryptocoin thread sits undisturbed in Sidebar WTF:

None of them are actually mega. Kilo at most.

Maybe switching to non-metric units could help?
-
@JBert
It takes more hashing power than Alex's computer has to move the cryptothread.

Were well use to you're brand of pedantry by now. I suppose it would of made sense to mark some people as such but its funny watching newbies fall into those traps.

We should have Bronze, Silver, and Gold subcategories of megathread based on volume, so OP can feel proud.

If programmers were really like that, we wouldn't have so many java packages with less than 3 classes inside. What is the point of those?

Overly ambitious? Budget cuts before the project got completed?

That's the problem - most aren't. I'm a so called good programmer, or real programmer if you will. It pains me to look at modern software development and all the idiocy surrounding it.
-
But why isn't our topic with by far the most posts in the megatopic category?
-
@boomzilla
Not even Alex likes the likes topic.

Seems cromulent.

Could I put in a request to make the icon color for Megatopics different than the icon color for the Civilized Salon?

Yes. But only if said request includes a hex code for new color that won't look terrible or clash with other categories

Personally, I'd go with the color of the original Salon for the New And Improved Salon. Or maybe a little lighter, to indicate the improvement.

@izzion copy pasted the old one! good idea :D

The only critera for belonging in that category is "@apapadimoulis saw it on the 43 seconds he was looking for topics to move".
-
I'm sure if we all pitch in we can make this topic into a megatopic.
-
@error But that would be so meta that we might as well keep it in its current Meta category.
-
@error
Brilliant!
-
All mega topics are closed now due to the new social distance requirements. We also need some space between posts, I'll try to achieve that with @error 's bot

It distanced itself so far he can't hear you, it seems.

So no posting on any topic if anyone else has posted to them in the last week?
