I posted a video that shows politicians doing something. Nothing was added, subtracted or otherwise injected into the video. But if @apapadimoulis or any (former) mod deems it unworthy of this category, I'm fine with moving it.

It might not be strictly garage stuff, but it definitely does not bring anything to this, already quite big, topic. Yeah, politicians are doing politician stuff. Basically, it's just spam.
If everyone adds posts like this, it would get bloated and (what's worse) it would devolve into garage in, like, 10 minutes. It does not happen only because most people are more restrained... and you abuse that.
As Immanuel Kant said: not cool, bro!

... Bloated? and what might that look like? Two bajillion replies instead of just one 🤣
By applying the to-be-announced, formalized, all that rubric, the garage is really about tone, and on is, like @lolwhat said, It's a candid video of something that happened with no commentary (let alone snarky).
I have no idea what the topic is, so I can't actually comment on of its on topic.
I agree this could definitely devolve into garage material, at which point the whole thread would probably be extracted into a hopefully clever sounding title in the garage. But so could any post on any topic, so far as I can tell.
But instead hopefully one of two things would happen.
If somebody was annoyed, they would flag and ignore it. It'll probably be forgotten anyway since it's a mega thread.
if someone wanted to reply to with snark, they would start a new topic that goes to the garage.

Given that the "political theater" in question is an action that the two elected officials in the video have required of the residents of their state, and that the rationale behind the orders was the suppression of the virus that is the subject of this thread, I would strongly disagree with your assessment.

That it's 'theatre' doesn't mean it's not sincere, or that it's unreasonable. There's obviously no technical necessity to wear a mask while stood on a podium way back from a crowd, but the crowd ought to be masked and therefore the politician needs to lead by example.
Similarly, Charlton Heston's farcical rifle waving 'cold dead hands' speech was obviously theatrical as he presumably didn't anticipate a gun fight yet his belief in guns was probably quite genuine.

Since you've skipped past my point that the video was indeed relevant to this thread and went straight to what the video implies, I'll take that as agreement that the video is in fact relevant. The defense rests.
-
@antiquarian I don't think the video's a good fit for this thread because it seemed like party-political trolling, but given that it was there I thought I might as well respond to it, rather than to a meta-argument about forum etiquette.

^That was my impression as well. There's nothing really newsworthy about it: Of course, wearing a mask when standing outside, alone, during a press conference, is political theatre. Just like the press conference itself. The only reason this gets attention is because the political party is explicitly mentioned.
And it wasn't just a video that was posted, but a pretty disgusting Twitter thread about the video.

So, we're going into "partial lockdown". In my interpretation, the main difference from what we've had in the past is that people's own healthy judgement is being taken out of the equation because people are tired of the measures so they don't do stuff that's optional and hence they need something enforceable.

A curfew starting at 9 PM has been announced in large French cities. It's scheduled to last at least until December 1st.
-
So, yesterday here they announced an 'alcohol curfew'. It is not possible to sell or carry alcoholic products between 20:00 and 07:00. Now, yesterday, they announced this would also apply to weed.
Today they found out that's impossible. You see, weed is illegal under the Dutch opium law. However, per policy, this is not enforced. It's not possible to ban weed in a time window per emergency order, since it's banned outright. And it's apparently also not possible to adjust the non-enforcement policy.
-
@PleegWat said in Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!:
And it's apparently also not possible to adjust the non-enforcement policy.
Well, selectively enforcing existing and valid laws between 22:00 and 7:00 smells like it would violate any sane constitution or at least the basic laws that govern the work of the police.

Oh, right, I almost forgot where you live now.
-
@dfdub Probably along those lines. Other interesting legal twists:
- Face masks are 'strongly recommended'. They will become mandatory 'as soon as possible', but clothing requirements are a violation of personal freedom which requires a legal basis. Current expectation is for this to happen somewhere next month. Shopkeepers are urged to require visitors to wear face masks, but unsurprisingly they're not jumping at the chance to play police.
- Church services with more than 30 visitors are strongly recommended against. They cannot go further than that without changing the constitution, which is both impossible on any useful timescale and very unlikely to pass anyway since all the Christian parties are guaranteed to vote against.
- There is a strong recommendation to not invite more than 3 guests per day into your home, but again there is no actual jurisdiction to enforce anything, based on constitutional safeguards. Only in cases like neighbours complaining about excessive noise the police can act.

Oh, right, I almost forgot where you live now.
Frankly, US constitution is one of the most sane, if not the most sane constitution in the world. No mixing rule of law with social justice in the same paragraph. No constitutional obligations to take special care of large families. And no arbitrarily suspending every constitutional right whenever Mackerel feels like it. Just a simple list of straight to the point laws that shall not be infringed.
(If anyone replies I'll self-flag for jeffing but I don't feel like making a new garage thread just for one joke.)

Revolutionary new breath test can prove a possibly contaminated person does not carry COVID-19 in seconds. Based on the article, about 75% of those who tested negative in the regular test also got a negative result on this device. The article does not mention a number of false negatives, but suggests it is very low; someone who tested negative on the device would not need to undergo a regular test.

- Face masks are 'strongly recommended'. They will become mandatory 'as soon as possible', but clothing requirements are a violation of personal freedom which requires a legal basis.
So that is the reason they’re not mandatory? All I keep reading and hearing is that it’s “difficult” to enforce the wearing of them, without anybody explaining why that would be so.
On this note, though:
Complaints that it’s impossible for police etc. to enforce a requirement to wear face masks, both because there is no legal basis for it (and doubts about whether it’s legally possible to enforce them at all) and because of manpower shortages. Plus there are concerns about the believability of non-police officials who have to enforce things like this, because of all the conflicting statements and suggestions coming from the government and its advisors.
-
@Zerosquare said in Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!:
A curfew starting at 9 PM has been announced in large French cities. It's scheduled to last at least until December 1st.
Also there is a not-quite-mandatory-but-strongly-recommended England-style "rule of 6" everywhere (i.e. avoid gatherings of more than 6 people, even in private settings).
-
@remi said in Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!:
UK? can't be bothered to check whether it applies everywhere
The UK's internally complicated (because some powers are devolved in some cases) but the rule of 6 is pretty much the same everywhere with some exceptions (such as it being a rule of 15 for weddings, which is 6 from each side plus 3 people in an official capacity).
Also, things are seriously spiralling out of control here, with the core locus of the problem being schools and universities (because many students are idiots), but everything's spreading and the government is having problems with the idea that they need to get a grip ASAP or things will become even more expensive to sort out. Oh well, I was already used to being locked down anyway.

Not exactly, but it does make good social sense (and with strict masking, it's not too hazardous).

I saw someone putting it this way:
All those rules simply aim at reducing the number of social contacts. They could equally well be "people whose name starts with a 'b' must stay at home." Governments pick rules that are slightly less asinine so that people can remember them, and preferentially targeting bits that are (slightly) less harmful to the rest of our lives, but they don't target any specific activity for any specific reason, anything that reduces contacts is fair game.
I'll let you decide if that was an optimistic, realistic or cynical comment. Or all (and more) of the above.
