PHP IDE
-
I want to finish my storefront before the end of the year. I hate using the online text editor but I don't want to write it in ASP.NET and port it to PHP. So I need a very simple IDE.
It needs to run on Windows 7.
It can't carry a ton of shovelware dependencies.
It needs to do enough Intellisense to pick up function names and parameters.
That's it.Any suggestions?
-
@Zenith
I’ve been a happy customer of JetBrains’ PHPStorm for quite a while.

I thought you said your deadline was the end of the year, not 1/14?
-
I haven't used it for PHP (and I haven't used PHP since v3), but VS Code is basically the best IDE, and it does seem to have language support for PHP.

I'm not some government agency cowering in fear at using version LAST_YEAR in CURRENT_YEAR.

You'd be surprised how much less likely that is when you steer clear of CP. If only more agency executives, state senators, and football coaches knew that...

The more the merrier say I.
Besides, there are two kinds of people. Those who are admit they are perverted, and those who refuse to admit that they are perverted.

Given the context, I assume P stands for pornography, and C stands for particularly sketchy kind of it.

Computer programs. You avoid them and you don't get computer worms.

no, see. you avoid computer programs and you can't get tricked by the trojans. worms get in on their own and make a right mess of things (just like real life worms do! and they're even less fun to get rid of!)

Are you saying MS Office is a bunch of computer programs?

@izzion I was immediately turned off by what looked like rentware. However it says a fallback license is included. Do you recall if this was a traditional license key or a phone home activation?
@error I'm also looking at VS Code. But on some level, I think if I'm already in Visual Studio, I may as well go the ASP.NET porting route. It also seems derpy about not letting me just download a plugin without the product installed. I really dislike the hidden files-are-scary distribution model of NuGet.
-
@Zenith VS Code is related to Visual Studio in pretty much name only. It's a cross-platform NodeJS Electron app.
-
@error Will it hijack settings/associations on a PC with an older version of real Visual Studio already installed?
-

it's a "Phone home to activate installation" once installed activation has happened so no more phoning home unless you upgrade, and if you upgrade and your license doesnt' cover the version you installed it won't activate so you have to pay again, but you can use the old version just fine because it'll activate
. It also seems derpy about not letting me just download a plugin without the product installed.
yeah i hate that too.,.... but it seems to be how these things want to work....... bleh! VSCode itself is good tho.
Will it hijack settings/associations on a PC with an older version of real Visual Studio already installed?
dunno about older versions of proper VS, but it doesn't do it with VS 2018..... at least it doesn't for me. YMMV
-

No, they coexist and complement each other.
-

This.

It's also better than that makes it sound like it would be.
-
@Zenith
Personally, I use it enough to rent (though looking at the VSCode license, it’s cleaned up enough I might go ahead and switch since I’m using full VSE at work now). But otherwise you rent for a year and the most current version as of that time period and any minor/security updates for that version are yours forever even if you stop paying. Of course, they’ll change major versions every year, so you won’t get too much support beyond your 1 year rental, but
-
If you haven't looked into it, I recommend Sublime Text. It's a text editor rather than an IDE, but it does have a pretty good plugin system and IDE-ish plugins. Not sure if there's good PHP support but it's worth checking out.

@Tsaukpaetra sometimes I wonder whether attaching VSCode to the Visual Studio brand helped or hurt its popularity.
-

I've got their "everything" package, and I can activate by key without internet connection so it seems it can activate without phoning home. Activation by login needs internet and phone home. Obviously.

I think Constraint Programming, personally, but I can't see what that has to do with worms. Maybe he means Cooking Properly to kill the parasites in your meat before you eat it?
-
@boomzilla I don't know about worms, but I remember reading about parasites in snails that will eat your brain. If the infestation is bad enough, there's a risk of becoming a PHP developer.
-

Every Microsoft product needs to be attached to one of their major brands [or a new major brand created - which is VERY expensive].... Thus, if not Visual Studio brand, which would you pick? Office???

It's a cross-platform editor. The obvious answer should be "Windows"!
Only because that's how MS works.

Windows 7 won't magically explode and stop working once the deadline passes. At least not anymore than Windows always has.

Less when the updates stop.

@HardwareGeek The thing that gets me about PHP is that it's virtually the only option on Linux-based hosting. I'd much rather use ASP but the anti-PHP crowd is even more anti-Windows. Am I supposed to use Python or something for basic web applications?

Just use ASP.Net Core and a micro or small Linux instance on EC2.
