Take a hint, motherfucker

Second registration request from this known spammer:
Going to let that sit in the queue for a while longer.
-
Another frequent flier:
-
Ugh...this is frustrating...
-
LOLNOPE
-
@boomzilla but he's neutral good!
-
@Benjamin-Hall neutral gone.
-
Second time this one showed up in the queue this morning:
Automatic stopforumspam reporting is broken for them so on the second one I (:cough: :cough: :cough:) reported them manually. I guess I'll let this one sit for a while before rejecting it.

Why? Do you believe they'll be back to provide real content?
-
@Tsaukpaetra no, I believe that if I reject them quickly they'll try to reregister quickly.
-

send them an email telling them that they will never be approved to register and that if they keep trying you'll send glitter bombs to their offices, except instead of glitter it'll be poo.... infected with ebola.....?
-
@Vixen heh...since my submission they now show the username and email belong to a spammer:
I've rejected the registration now.

Send them an email telling them that they need to prove themselves before being accepted. Give them a list of ridiculous tasks to complete.
And when they do, reject the registration.

making them get you takeout from Milliways should be sufficient.

It always baffled me that they brought up money there. If you had the ability to get there, Shirley inlet money was no object, so why bother accounting? It's not like the proprietors could make use of it anyways...

The name and email amused me a little bit, at least:
-
@boomzilla
It would have been great spam to help the s around here deal with the problems of aging
-

hmm.... evil idea.... these emails are presumably monitored to activate the account..... register them for spam by putting them in all those newsletter forms across the internet and registering them for a bunch of "free" porn sites too?
-
Whoa...
-
@boomzilla One time I fed my virtual pet some bad code and he had the DigiRuns
-
Now the spammers are using spam to recruit.
-
@boomzilla The CapsLock Institute?
-
@boomzilla I just got a notification "casuallove started following you". I think your spammer-filter sprung a leak.
-
@acrow if they come from an IP address and use an email and username not known to stopforumspam.com they are allowed to register. All first posts must be manually approved. It's possible they're going for a profile spam but they haven't put anything up there yet. Definitely haven't tried to post anything yet.
-
@boomzilla A bot that got as far as following people. I don't think it'll just up and crash at that point. Do you think it's waiting for inbound PMs? ...I assume you see PM traffic.
And did it follow just me, or everybody?

I don't have any followers here.
-

Hmm, how do I find that out? (Click click click, profile, weird menu in a strange place, followers…) OK, it didn't follow me.
-
@acrow said in Take a hint, motherfucker:

It singled out you specifically

Hmm... https://what.thedailywtf.com/user/casuallove
Following 7
On a forum of... a couple hundred people?
Next question: Is it following people one-by-one on a set interval?
All the follows seem to be from the be from the beginning of the alphabet. Although, it missed @dkf. And followed @blakeyrat.
-
@acrow At least blakey got a notification. He loves those.

I do not see PM traffic. What do you think this is, Discourse?!?
-
@boomzilla maybe @casuallove can explain xirself.
-

You have backend database access.
Besides, I'd expect at least metadata, such as PM counts, to be available for mods. You know, to triage PM spamming.
-

Can I still make wild guesses while waiting?
-
I thought maybe it could be from some thread, but IIRC the only thread @ask_compu has posted in is in the Lounge
-
@hungrier And I'm pretty sure blakeyrat just plain retired. How about random user handles?
As for the purpose...
How about as triggers for targeted marketing? If it scans notifications for hints of a "need for services", it then scans the whole thread and markov-generates a semi-relevant post with a ad link? Since the post "replies" to a recent post with something that attempts to look like actual conversation, it might slip past the mods on a lot of forums.Then again, it's just as likely that someone's messing around. Or the Ch****e government is after us.

Technically, yeah. Which would require figuring out how that's stored and then looking at it.
Besides, I'd expect at least metadata, such as PM counts, to be available for mods. You know, to triage PM spamming.
Not that I'm aware of.

There are shit tons of accounts that get created and apparently abandoned. No clue what's going on with them.

...So, it could be the first N accounts mentioned on the front page, at some point in time.
Although blakeyrat is gone, some of his threads live on.

Frontpage commentards, perhaps?

Sadly, he doesn't appear to be even lurking anymore. He was last online 22 days ago.
-
@hungrier eh? what about me?
-
@ask_compu You're one of the lucky 7 who was followed by a possible spam account. Scroll up about 20 posts
-
@hungrier oh yeah i saw that follow notification, checked the profile and knew it was probably a spam account
