@stillwater we’ll make it a podcast and call it Radio WTF! Or, wait, we’ll make it a blog and call it…
The Frontpage.

I think that sometimes car and home insurance companies will raise your rates just to see if you're paying attention. For example, my car insurance company just raised our rates by 20% compared to six months ago. Neither my wife and I have had any accidents recently.
So I switched to a different car insurance company. My new company is charging us only 5% more for a whole year than my old company wanted to charge us for six months.

Yeah, that's a gambit available to any periodically billed service. Not killing the goose, just stabbing it a little.
It can get a positive return because customers s.g. are never fully rational. This dependence on antirationality probably makes it a form of fraud, but then again so am I to judge.
-
Did you know?
When you forget to take a mask out of a bag before you wash it, it will be clean afterwards:
Ok, a little shriveled, but so what.
-
When classifying suspensions, the prefix
aero
operates by mutating both terms implied by the suffix, sol
orgel
, changing thel
iquid term to represent a gas medium and altering thes
olid org
as term to represent the suspensate as liquid or solid respectively. And somehow this is the least stupid way.

A decent part of my outlook on life was guided, or informed, by two of what I've come to consider greats among the observational satirists: Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.
Both have since passed, but I find myself wondering a lot how they'd see the world now - one bemused by its absurdities, the other angered by its injustices, and both of these have only grown leaps and bounds since their respective passings.
Interestingly, both took the view that the people in power shouldn't be and that imprisonment upon election was not the worst possibility out there.

@Arantor would you like to be a Pope? I can declare you a Pope. Hell, I just did.
I've also excommunicated you, since I'm already Pope.
-
After watching way too many Looney Tunes, I had to look it up:
The real scientific Latin names of the roadrunner and the coyote are Geococcyx californianus and Canis latrans respectively.
Edit: anagrams of which are "lexicon of organic yuccas" and "satanic snarl".

Twitch users: I don't even know what I'm watching but here have $50.
Twitter users: Noooo I can't afford optional $8 fee for a status symbol! Bad Twitter bad!

@Arantor said in Random Thought of the Day:
@Benjamin-Hall which is why M Night Shyamalan’s trilogy (Unbreakable, Split, Glass) is actually amazing and completely worth watching as a superhero trilogy that doesn’t act like a superhero trilogy.
I've been meaning to watch the latter two but haven't got around to it

@Gern_Blaanston You are responding to a post which is more than one year old. After it was posted, we've found the budget to create a dedicated thread: https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/28139/the-belt-onion-club/
That thread too is more than one year old. It was created about a month after the post you're replying to.
Seems like it should be older

This sounds like the equivalent of asking if a tree falls in the middle of a densely populated metropolis, would anyone in the forest hear it

Before it was a tailbone, "coccyx" was the Latin word for the cuckoo, so the roadrunner is an "earth cuckoo". (If you've ever heard them -- they don't go "meep! meep!" -- you'll recognize immediately their connection to the bird what likes Coco Puffs.)

Shittiness of a library/framework/platform can be measured with the rate you open new browser tabs when coding.
By that metric, Jetpack Compose is very shit. Normally I have no more than 5-10 tabs, but when developing my Android app I close 30+ tabs several times per hour.
-
@Gustav Is it really due to Jetpack being shit or Android being Android, though? Or even mobile being mobile?
-
@Applied-Mediocrity all of the above. Currently I'm writing a 100-line workaround for lack of observable lists.

One is peasants paying millionaires, the other is millionaires paying billionaires. As

Yes, "ground cuckoo", but
"Ground cuckoo" is what they make chicken burgers out of.
Not to be confused with chicken nuggets, which are made from "particle bird".

But note, these have mostly/only compressive strength. A chicken plank or other structural member needs to use Oriented Strands of Bird.

Superhero movies and comics ... while they have flashy visual effects and lots of property damage, ... they're hilariously ineffective--they might as well be hitting each other with wet noodles.
So...
Superhero combat is always an analogy for the sexual act. It isn't combat. It just looks like it. That's what you get for being totemically-obsessed.

It seems to me that there are substantially fewer new posts on WTDWTF now then there was a few years ago. Do the stats support this idea?
-
@jinpa 1) there were people spamming the shit out of the forum to prove a point to and 2) a number of people from the mid-2010s influx have chosen to learn and not return in the last few years.
Very likely you're right.
-
@Arantor said in Random Thought of the Day:

@izzion I meant 'leave' and my fingers autocorrected, but some of them certainly learned things that changed their minds.

No. Bagging does not, in the general case, accomplish sterilization. Consider a blivet in uniform harmonic motion.

When a man self-satisfies, we call it jacking off... but why do we not call it jilling off on the other side of the gender aisle?

Thought in the shower this morning: There should be a cross-over between two of my favorite games, titled The Elder Scrolls: Skylines. Plan and build a new city in Winterhold while battling trolls, wolves, dragons and, of course, traffic.

Further proof that Europeans are much more perverted than ‘merkins… they have to come up with multiple terms for masturbation.

@izzion it's well known that Americans are extreme prudes. Have you heard of any other (non-Muslim) country where bare tits can get a movie banned from TV?
