Yeah, tildes are this way, when hungry. They can eat half a post, the whole post or even a post and a half, if they have time.
I hate tildes. I shoot them in their behinds and then leave them bleeding, so they suffer a long and painful death.
-
@kt_ I think you're confusing tildes with bold italics.
-
@Gąska What did Italy ever do to you that you wish them harm?
-
@JBert It's just the bold ones that are a problem.

@Lorne-Kates what happened here?

...
...Oooooh!
TIL backtick works both lowercase and uppercase!
Edit: also, TI finally L after all these years how you do
this.
-
@Gąska Also, incrementing the number of tildes makes it fail differently:
- ~
- ~~
- ~~~
- *~~~~*
- *~~~~~*
- **~~~~~~**
- **~~~~~~~**
- ***~~~~~~~~***
- ***~~~~~~~~~***
Also also, without putting them in a numbered list, the tildes and asterisks will discombobulate each other:
~
~~
~~~
~***
***
~***
***
~***
***
~***
***
@Gąska After I posted it I thought about going back and adding an <abbr> tag or something, but ended up not doing that.
I was confused by this, but I guess ` and ~ share a key in some keyboards.
Typically
US-EN
- top left, beneath the Esc key.
-
@PJH fun fact: unlike most European countries (as far as I could tell from quick googling), standard Polish keyboard layout is 1:1 identical with US QWERTY. That's not something you normally care about, but it kinda matters when you're buying a laptop abroad - for a long time, computers were more expensive locally than getting one shipped internationally (or even better - having a relative/friend buy one for you if they're traveling there anyway). Getting one from UK or Germany leaves you with wrong key labels all over the place, but American ones have no such problem.
Seems like it might be a bit impractical for all the little squigglies and cross bars that Discourse won't let you have in your username, but on the other hand it is the best keyboard layout.
-
@hungrier AltGr works well enough. We only have one diacritic per letter (except for Ż and Ź - solved by one being AltGr+Z and the other being AltGr+X).
Touch typing won't really help you when the key that produces \ in the English keyboard layout not only has a different label on the German physical keyboard (#) but is also in a different place on the physical keyboard (on the right side of the middle row).
Although, that's still better than the reverse, I guess. Typing with the German keyboard layout requires having an
IntlBackslash
key in order to type<
,>
, and|
, and English keyboards don't even have one.
And it's not just about layout. Many laptops have just slightly smaller keys than I'm used to - and that's enough to make me typo almost every word.
If only there were some way to markup a document to instruct the computer how to render the text. Like, it'd be pure and absolute fantasy if those marks weren't ambiguous, and had clearly defined start and end boundaries, and weren't overloaded to perform several different markups depending on arbitrary and unknowable rules.
<I>
have no idea what such a set of r<ul>
e it would play in the world wide web.
@Lorne-Kates I particularly like that, while obliquely complaining about the obscurity and ambiguity of markdown, you used markdown syntax to format the HTML tags in your post.
@Lorne-Kates Lorne, dude, THEY took down your Patreon! I wanted to patronize you!
@morbiuswilters Kickstarter and gofundme didn't agree with him either.
@PleegWat Dilbert Guy recently talked on his Periscope that his Whenceforth mobile app has recently added a donation feature and that everyone who's banned on Patreon
@Gąska Dick Masterson has also set up a thing for people kicked off of Patreon
-
@hungrier yeah but he's a Dick.
Well, surely you didn't look that up by looking at actual pictures, because actually printing labels on keyboards would make them look not-pretty.
Because markdown is so dumb I had to use markdown to write out basic html tags.
I worked for more than a year with a keyboard with French-layout key labels. Not a problem. Of course, it is a problem people fortunate enough not to spend days upon days in front of the screen for a living.
