I think this settles the debate for who is the coolest tech billionaire

@masonwheeler has not been this erect since his honeymoon.
-
At least one restriction in the underwater portions is barely large enough for a human to squeeze through, let alone a "kid-sized sub." The
recoveryrescue is already underway anyway. So, like just about all other pontifications by St. Elon, it's fucking useless.
-
@lolwhat They could always add an auger to the front so the kid can drill through.

I don't see how that would help.

But that would be Boring...

Wow, grammar mistakes and now diving mistakes. That article's determined to annoy me :(
-
@coldandtired How dare you! Elon is our Lord and Savior, and the laws of physics and grammar do not apply!
-
It infuriates me how people bite at Musk's shit. AAAAARGH!

My son said in response to this:
Y'all are a bunch of children in adult suits.
-
I have no problem declaring St. Elon the coolest tech billionaire ... if he sets up his office at the Amundsen-Scott Station.
-
True to form, he'll miss all the deadlines and the sub will be completed 2 months after they've all died or been rescued some other way.

Just wish that I could get out of the damn adult suit once in a while.
-
I bet it's just a garbage bag duct-taped to a scuba mask.

That's the plan from the start. PR stunt #1 - 'We will help with this tragedy', PR stunt #2 - 'We have this idiotic solution that will not work, but sounds cool', PR stunt #3 - 'Oh man, we didn't make it in time, so sorry. If only someone called me earlier', PR stunt #4 - 'Our idiotic solution is now on display/given to charity'.
#4 depends on anything being really done, perhaps it's all just talk. No one will ask about solution existence when the crisis is over and he knows it.
-
Looks like the rescuers are doing quite well, even without Musk's PR stunt:

There is a video of it being tested

Heheh, 'tested' :D And what exactly were they testing? That metal is a barrier for water?
They sure were not testing if this thing will fit into the cave, because it's obvious it won't.

I think we can all agree that if there's one thing Musk is good at, it's self-promotion.
-
Look at the size of the "submarine" compared to the diagram of the smallest chokepoint in the tunnel.
-
@deadfast I'm really proud of the Thai military, they're knocking some heads and getting shit done.
Too bad about their diver who didn't make it though. Still, there's a lot worse ways to die than trying to save the lives of a dozen kids.
-
@sockpuppet7 said in I think this settles the debate for who is the coolest tech billionaire:
I still think Gates is the cooler tech billionaire, given how he's an actual philanthropist, in for the long haul of improving the world.
Now, Musk is brilliant at sound bytes and hopping on the media band wagon, so props to him for that. But he really isn't doing much for changing the world to a better place.

Apparently "cool tech billionaires" harass people on Twitter and generally behave like a little kid.
-
The boys have to crawl out of the water swirling with silt in complete darkness and clamber across a rocky peak before descending in the murky water again.
Why do they have to do it in complete darkness? Couldn't they put a light there so the boys could see where they're going?
-
@julmu Also, how did they get over that steep 4 meter hill before it was submerged?
-
@julmu I haven't heard shit from Sacha Baron Cohen since I started hearing about Elon Musk, by the way.

Then boy howdy do we have the thread for you. To the garage!
-
@blakeyrat But if everyone stopped tweeting things they can't prove, Twitter would be deserted. Hmm, you know, that's a really good idea.

Where's @masonwheeler when you need him

Now that I see it I wonder what they were planning to do about buoyancy.

Borrow some from his publicity machine.

Pffffbt. His teams don't worry about brakes. Why would they worry about niggling details like Archimedes' principle? Deploy fast, deploy often.

Is what you will be doing to the new subs as the old ones repeatedly crash.

A software update will fix that. Just wait a few weeks and they will sort it. OTA updates are a panacea.

@boomzilla I like how a few replies to that tweet are by fake Elon Musk accounts promoting crypto scams.
Doesn't Twitter have a way to flag those?
EDIT: Here's a screenshot potpourri:
The Medium links are gone, though this last blogspot still works:

I'm guessing that the water is so murky that, at least for the submerged parts, lights don't make that much of a difference.
Also, how did they get over that steep 4 meter hill before it was submerged?
They... climbed?

@boomzilla said in I think this settles the debate for who is the coolest tech billionaire:
Mini-sub is ready if needed. It is made of rocket parts & named Wild Boar after kids’ soccer team. Leaving here in case it may be useful in the future.
Yeah, that'll be a no mate:
Excellent job by the rescuers!
-
@julmu said in I think this settles the debate for who is the coolest tech billionaire:

Serious answer: they might've gone in by a different, longer route that is much more flooded (or that the divers haven't found). Caves are tricky.

The Elon apologists are out in force! It's amazing how he can waste time and money on something that will never help (and probably not even work) and these people still stick up for him.
-
-
@blakeyrat Maybe he can get some volunteers to swim in there so they can be rescued with it!

I still think the kid sub was cool. It's a good thing it wasn't needed.

Yeah, good thing that an accident where it would be needed never happened.
-
@mott555 I love how I can get a downvote by pointing out that people are dumb for supporting Elon when he delivers something too late to help, oh and even if he did by some miracle deliver on time it never would have worked because the thing was too big to fit in the cave.
Elon Musk is my new role model. He's a complete failure of a person, a complete failure of a businessman, a complete failure of an engineer, and somehow he still has rabid followers and way more money than I will ever have.

To be fair to him on that point, it was the first British diver's opinion that it would be safer to leave the kids in there (bringing in supplies of course) until there was zero chance of more rain happening (aka weeks or months). At the time Elon started this boondongle that was probably the prevailing opinion.
The Thai military decided to do the rescue right away. And pulled it off far quicker than I think anybody would have expected.

Because if a cave floods, there’s a lot of dust and silt and other fine stuff that will become suspended in the water. If you swim through it you’ll stir it up even more. Putting a lamp in that will just light up the dust and not help visibility much or at all.

Maybe the lesson to learn from this is that the current (western) obsession with safety has gone a little too far? IOW, you can say, “There’s a risk but we think it’s acceptably low so we go ahead” and succeed, instead of waiting until there’s no risk at all anymore.
