Because alternate URL protocols can do super annoying and/or dangerous things. For example, javascript: is an "alternate URL protocol". ms-settings: is another one.

@blakeyrat I don't know how steam's handler works; maybe that causes the URL to be opened in steam's browser, potentially bypassing any blocker addons in the normal browser?
