The go up a post button does not go up a post
-
This button, here, is the most incredibly useless feature I've ever seen.
https://i.imgur.com/9m0zinf.png
It does the herculean task of scrolling the page a small amount.
Why? If you don't have a scroll wheel on your mouse, you've already got your fingers on PgUp and PgDn. There is no use for this button whatsoever.Except one.
When you go to a previous page, it will start at the top of said page. It'd be handy if you could click a button while at the top of the page you're currently on and have it jump to the bottom of the previous page so you don't have to scroll all the way down there and so you don't have to scroll all the way down the current page so you can see the page picker.
And it doesn't do that. The 'up a post' button does nothing at the top of a page, and the 'down a post' button does nothing at the bottom of a page.
Useless.
-
Fuck, I'd be happy if the top of the page had page selectors. Having to scroll to the bottom of the page to go to the previous page is silly.
-
Yeah, there have been times where I'd be moving backwards up a thread and be lost as to how to get to the last page, only to remember the damn "page back" button is on the bottom.
-
That's not a "up a post button". That's supposed to be the same as page up...
-
@tsaukpaetra You say that like it makes sense.

I say everything with confidence! That way they can't tell when I'm BSing!
-
@topspin
top/bottom of page for mobileI stand corrected
-
@bb36e No, that's the double arrow.

you're right...the fuck is this thing??

The double arrow is (supposed to be) top/bottom of topic. All it does is press the home/end key (or equivalent).
-
@tsaukpaetra what? Home and end keys go to the top of the page, not the top of the thread. Double arrow goes to one end of the thread; single arrow scrolls by one post.
-
@pie_flavor
@Tsaukpaetra is correct - the doubles is the end of the thread, the single arrow is one page up/down.

But I guess that just makes it more useless since nearly every keyboard has PgUp/PgDn and the ones that don't have already found workarounds for the websites that don't have 'em built in.

Yeah, personally I never use the buttons on desktop.
-
@pie_flavor
They're very nice on mobile though. About the only way I can get back to my spot at the end of a thread after I jellypotato.
-
@izzion The double arrows, yes. I'm saying the single arrows are useless.
-
@pie_flavor I don't think I've ever even tried using the single arrows before. The result seems to be
scroll(random(3..10))
posts in the chosen direction.
-
@hardwaregeek It probably uses the notification view as its source of randomness.

In infini-scroll mode they go to either end of the thread
-
@hungrier Yeah, but you'd have to be the sort of person who puts up with NodeBB-style infiniscroll.

Works-ish for me!

And me! Most of the time. Sometimes, if I get reconnected to the websocket but don't refresh, things get quite janky...
-
Yeah that bugged me the one time I tried to use them for paging. Because every ducking ui in the world follows the convention of
<< first page
< previous pagenext page
last page (or end of thread)
-
They're supposed to be used in conjunction with infiniscroll:
<< scrolls to the first post in the thread - same as Home.
< scrolls up one display page (unless already at the first post in the thread) - same as Pg Up.
> scrolls down one display page (unless already at the last post in the thread) - same as Pg Dn.
>> scrolls to the last post in the thread - same as End.With pagination, though:
<< navigates to the first post in the thread. Home goes to the top of the current page.
< scrolls up one display page (unless at the top of the current page) - same as Pg Up.
> scrolls down one display page (unless at the bottom of the current page) - same as Pg Dn.
>> navigates to the last post in the thread. End goes to the bottom of the current page.I'm not saying this is how they should work, but rather how they currently do work.
