Does HipChat not have a search feature? If not, that seems... spectacularly useless.
It takes you to the web page interface. It's...not great.

FWIW, not that I'm defending that bug, but I've never used that menu for that. I focus the window and win-arrow it to another screen.
-
@blakeyrat said in Usable team instant messaging:
Frankly, I notice that bug more on Discord, because that little contextual menu is how you move a window out from underneath a game running in "full-screen-windowed" mode, and Discord's supposed to be a chat app for gamers. It shows the developers of it haven't played a fucking video game in their lives, by not bothering to test that feature.
Or you minimize the game and drag the window.
Honestly, I never knew that feature existed in the first place until you started complaining that Discord didn't do it. I'd bet most gamers don't.
-
@pie_flavor Most games in full-screen windowed mode can't be minimized. Some can, true.
As for you not knowing how Windows works, well I guess you're just an ignorant motherfucker, huh?
-
@blakeyrat Show me a game that can't be minimized. And why would you play in windowed in the first place?
-
@pie_flavor said in Usable team instant messaging:
Show me a game that can't be minimized.
Heck, have a bonus one:
The only game I can think of off the top of my head with a minimize widget when in full-screen windowed mode is Paladins. (And probably Smite, which shares the same engine.)
-
@blakeyrat Not a widget. A capability. Never found a game I couldn't alt tab out of without breaking ('cept for @ben_lubar's).

I have never seen a game that has an exclusive fullscreen mode that doesn't break horribly when you alt tab.
Plus, AS:RD defaults to not-exclusive full screen mode, so you intentionally set it to exclusive mode in order to get that to happen.

Minecraft does all right. Just pauses the game normally, keeps it running if you have a UI up.

That's too bad. I've rarely run into a game that has a problem with it in recent years. I'm more likely to run games in a smaller-than-fullscreen window nowadays, though.
If you'd like some more anecdotal examples: Blizzard's current games have been fine with Alt-Tab for me, as have the last two Civilizations.
-
Every once in a while I get email from HipChat:
Coworker Name just sent you a 1-1 message but you're offline.
Um, okay I guess...
-

I get those even when I'm online and talking to them.

@parody Celeste came out last week and if you alt tab in exclusive fullscreen mode while the game is starting up none of the 3D graphics load, so instead of a mountain there's just a big empty void with a rectangle at the bottom.

A grand total of one of these games break when you alt tab it in exclusive fullscreen. See if you can guess which one (hint: it's AS:RD)
Had to split them because scroll capture ran out of spaceAnd that's not including Overwatch, Minecraft, or anything pirated. The reason I turned on exclusive fullscreen is that I have been conditioned to expect it to work.

Of course you can alt-tab, but the full-screen windowed game is still covering the taskbar and desktop of that monitor due to being, you know, full-screen.
-
- Alt tab to your desired window. It is now on top, whatever else is in the background.
- Drag it wherever you were going to use Move to drag it to.
- ???
- Profit

Wait a minute, Flakeybrat hasn't

Doesn't necessarily work. Some programs (games, namely) keep themselves on top even if something else is focused
-
@sloosecannon Zero of the games I listed do that.

OK

Swing and a miss.
Even if this did work, how does it justify Discord not supporting a standard OS feature that's been there for 20 years again? I lost the thread somewhere. It's almost as if you're going way out of your way to defend a blatantly obvious bug.

As much as I hate to say it, Blakey's right here. There's a reason that feature exists, and just because you've never encountered a place where it's useful doesn't mean it doesn't have a purpose...
-
@sloosecannon The point is that it's not important. It's like the WTDWTF favicon glitching out on mobile - does it have a use, somewhere, somewhen? Yes. Is it a core part of the workflow for someone? Possibly. Is it really all that important for almost everyone? No. Discord is awesome, and has next to no bugs, and doesn't even need to be those things because everything else is shit. The fact that I would have to use a rarely used function by right clicking the window corner or pressing Alt+Space,M instead of right clicking the taskbar preview is really not all that game changing for me.
-
@blakeyrat said in Usable team instant messaging:
However, it's still at the bottom of the barrel as far as quality goes. Simple shit, like Move/Minimize/Restore/Etc working on the taskbar window preview, doesn't work, and they actually had to go out of their way to make that not-work in Windows, since you get that for "free" if you don't code your app like a dumbshit. (Slack has the same problem, last I used it.)
Discord and Slack are both web applications. Their desktop versions are just the webapps stuffed inside an Electron shell.
Which means that Electron apparently has fucked up taskbar menu handling.
-
@ben_lubar Yes, lots of people are bad at making games. They don't pay attention to basic functionality. Even so, plenty of games work. Nothing I've seen works as well as Civ5/6, but even say, Space Engineers works. It freaks out, but it recovers within a second.

@blakeyrat OK, so you've mentioned a handful of things you don't like about various software in this space.
Let's turn it on its head. If a hypothetical awesome team instant messaging client existed, what would it be like?

Hey, you can alt-tab. Sometimes. And sometimes, you'll have two mouse pointers when you tab back in... but it works... kinda...

Usability of Teams:
I just had to explain to everyone in my team how to follow a channel so you get a notification when someone posts
