Oh, it just didn't finish setting up the Store App yet.
No, what I care about is how to cancel or prevent them from attempting to install in the first place. At present you have to wait until they're fully there, then individually uninstall them. Takes friggin forever. Oh, and if you happen to not have enough space to actually install them, they'll happily wait until you do.
Thanks, Microsoft.
After an update, I always go into the store and specifically do an update to force them

Aha, I found the setting that causes there to be two different Documents and Pictures folders:
That has existed for a while.

So that means I'll have the joy of installing the Full Craters' Pupdate when I come home! I wonder how many settings it will manage to break or revert on my PC, as I've disabled as much of the Windows adware features as I can. Like auto-installing suggested store apps which of course has a nice big button to toggle... oh, wait, no, it's a setting hidden deep in the registry in a non-obvious location, because of course it is.
Sadly, not something I can force-install on my work computer as it runs Enterprise, which in my case means it'll install (big) updates whenever it feels like it rather than when I want it to. Right now would be a good time to do it actually, but I guess no such luck.
One thing they do turn back on is 'Occasionally show suggestions in Start'. Fuckers.

Seriously, why does it take two hours to install the bloody thing?
Updates like this are a complete OS install. My VMs at work (on USB) take all day.

OMG !!! My Enterprise machine is actually auto-updating !!! (Last time it would only update when I forced it with an ISO - which, if I remember, wasn't available until several weeks after the initial rollout.)

Yes it does IIRC, but you would be surprised how much software doesn't give a damn where you put it and just writes to
~\Documents
anyway.
-
@pie_flavor Ah, I just create a symbolic link at the original location. As long as Windows knows the correct location, I've never had any issues.

Too much code assumes a static location. See List of Software that can't handle spaces thread.

I just prefer junctions because they're lower-level.

EDIT: Wait, there's a C:/Users/LB/Documents with a location tab, AND a C:/Users/LB/OneDrive/Documents with a location tab? Apparently I now have TWO official Documents folders...
I think that depends. When I set up my user accounts, I do so by adding them after the installation is complete, as pure microsoft account identities, which maps all of the user folders to onedrive automatically, in every app run under that identity. It does it rather well. I just wish Visual Studio didn't keep its build artifacts with the code in Documents, because that stuff doesn't sync, and would be horrible if it did, but tries to.
-
Overall, this update was pretty painless for me. Some minor features, app improvements, but mostly it's about security and the new Mixed Reality improvements (which are awesome). The Photos app doesn't seem to have the remix3d integration they promised, but it is now a good basic video editor.
-
Amazingly, I didn't receive it right in the middle of class as I was expecting to. Although Google Drive's pointer error on shutdown was for once not located at null, so I don't know what to expect.
-
Eventually Windows Update will get that it's not going to install, right?

The Location tab will let you change things to a different drive. I have Downloads and Documents on E:, Music on F:, been doing that for a long time and it works fine.
However, there is one problem. If you change the location of one of those folders to a different drive, and then that drive becomes unavailable, you'll get a weird error message, which in true Microsoft tradition is misleading and tells you absolutely nothing about what is actually wrong.
Trying to run Explorer or access the Control Panel will result in a error message something along the line of "Unable to connect to server". (Been a while so i don't remember the exact error message).

I do recall that if the redirection was set up via Group Policy a Sync partnership thing (should) get automatically created so that doesn't happen as often, well, with the added "benefit" that the network drive will appear offline until the sync completes, and has other interesting glitches...

@tsaukpaetra You'd think that after 6 months Microsoft would have solved any bugs with the 1703 update! Oh, well, Windows Update will keep trying for all eternity until it installs properly.
-
Noticed that Adobe also wanted their own Full Craters' Pupdate, by releasing updates for almost their entire suite of programs the day after Microsoft released their big update. At least the Creative Cloud app works better than Windows Update...
My update process for my home computer went:
- Download the 1709 update
- Wait for install to start properly
- Have it BSOD after halfway done
- Wait for revert
- Do some maintenance to see if I could fix the problem
- Retry, but have the download process freeze twice (because I cleared the update cache)
- Update Adobe CC
- Windows finally managed to finish the 1709 download again
- Successful install, clean up several GB worth of crap post-update again
Also, seems updating the Adobe apps also removed my expired trial licenses so I could run another trial week on them. Or I could just buy the damn thing as I've been saying I'm gonna do for a couple months now.

I'm currently installing it on my desktop. No problems so far except with rebooting, but that's because my system refuses to soft boot. It will start from off fine, but hangs somewhere if told to reboot. It's OS independent, so I think it's a MB or power supply issue. Still annoying when I have to babysit it and power cycle the system when it reboots during the install process.

That most sublime creature: the Froghemoth. Specifically the D&D 5e version. It's about 15 feet tall, with 20 foot long tentacles and tongue. Those things in it's grasp--those are people.

I was just turning on my computer today, opened Chrome, opened YouTube, opened a video in a new tab, but before switching tabs I clicked on the notification bell to clear the counter. The instant I clicked, I got blackscreened, and then a second later my system was starting up again like I had just turned it on. I ran a disk check and SFC, but they both came up clean... spooky...

@lb_ Power dip?
-
One feature I've noticed in the pupdate is that the startup chime now gets mangled to hell. Although just the chime, sound works perfectly otherwise as far as I can tell.
-
@atazhaia I had no idea there even was a sound for startup. I guess it connects bluetooth devices after making that sound...
-
@lb_ Actually, come to think of it, it may be the login chime that's the sound that gets all mangled. If I'm at the comptuer as it finishes loading I tend to be rather fast at completing the login. And actually getting past the login screen is faster in this update it feels like.

That's the second time I've heard someone postulate power fluctuation in response to unexpected reboots. Is that really the only possible cause?

My Backup&Sync popped up a dialog a couple weeks ago saying it had been deprecated (or was going to be). And to get "Google Drive File Stream" instead. (Looking at the download site, that could be because we have a company plan...)
-
Ok, come on, the original one was same-day. Where's my Fall Creators' Update? Why haven't I gotten one yet?
-
@pie_flavor I had the opposite. (Spring) Creator's Update I had to force install on my home computer and wait a month on my work computer (due to no forcing on Enterprise). This one? Day 1 on both.

Yeah, Backup & Sync is for consumers, Drive File Stream is for business users. You get a Windows drive letter with placeholder files and they can be streamed on the fly.

Ditto (pro + enterprise). Though I did go and manually check for updates. Previous pupdates were often still delayed after manual checks.

My main computer updated last night. So far I've only noticed a couple of things:
- Dropbox complained about permissions on startup, but seems to be working properly.
- UWP applications have a blank space on the Taskbar while running. (There's no icon but the space responds to clicks properly.)
On the plus side, it seems to have fixed the Type 1 font problem I was having that started in 1703.

Leave it to Microsoft to not fix a problem for over 300 years.

Status: I was just informed that literally since the day this machine was installed it has been freezing (no they won't say what they were doing on it).
So I'm seeing if I'll fall the creators update and see if that helps any.
-
So I went to go "share" something to send it to myself and discovered that there's a new share target on my Android phone:
When I choose it, it lists all my Windows 10 PCs and gives me the option to send it to one or just put it in the notification center for all of them. Probably because I have Cortana for Android installed. Either way, it's exactly the kind of feature I wanted, except that it opens Edge despite whatever your default browser is.Speaking of which, apparently now Edge is available on the Play Store:

Interesting. I've noticed that share target but I don't have Cortana installed.

I've had a weird issue on my desktop since before the update, and it hasn't stopped after the update. Some UWP apps just open as a minimum-sized top-bar, and when closed and re-opened, work fine.
