This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don't much care for black olives.
Or green ones for that matter.

Not unpopular as far as I'm concerned. Olives are kinda nasty. Olive oil is fine, however.
-
@Zecc Anchovy-stuffed green olives taste completely different to any other kind. They're the only ones I like.
-
-
@HardwareGeek But... they're delicious.

It seems to me that olive oil tastes vaguely of bananas, which is definitely not something I'm looking for in my oil.

I've never really used the "good" (ie extra-virgin) stuff, and mostly use it for cooking. So while it has some flavor (and isn't suitable for things that need neutral flavors like deep frying), I've never noticed a pronounced flavor that I could describe as anything like that. Plus, I'm mostly congested year round due to allergies, so my sense of taste isn't the best. I key more on texture than taste--if I don't like something, it's likely due to its texture.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Nobody else seems to get it either, so not terribly surprised there. But, yeah, olive oil is too flavourful for my liking.

There is a world of difference between cheap olives you throw in a pasta dish or on a pizza, and the more expensive ones served with a cocktail or used in a salad.

Canned coke is more expensive than gasoline.
-
@Gąska
then get the small ziplock bags like normal people

@Luhmann whoever chose that name for soda was a freaking genius. Or a psychopath.

Yeah, but it tastes better.

Neither. It was just truth in advertising, as the original recipe included coca leaves.

I was more focused on the fact that the price of coke isn't 60% taxes.

95% is brand and advertisement. The rest is HFCS.

Marie Callenders' flag is in the ratio of 355:113. It's as precise as they were willing to go to represent pie.

You know what would be pretty amusing? A networking protocol based on QR codes. You could have multiple computers communicating by flashing data on the screen and using webcams to read it.
*googles*
Ah yes, of course it's been done.

I can see already six ways at least how this could be improved...
He's not even resizing or clearing away old data, that's probably hurting the recognition phase...

If converting .Net delegates into C function pointers for FFI purposes is done by runtime code generation, and runtime code generation is forbidden in UWP... Does that mean you can't call C functions with a callback inside UWP app?
Yes, yes, I know it's been several years since UWP is all but dead so it doesn't matter what works and doesn't work there, but still. It's pretty interesting unintended(?) consequence - or if it works, an interesting workaround that .Net Framework devs had to implement.

@Gąska said in Random thought of the day:

What gave you that idea?
-
@pie_flavor from the fact that nobody, absolutely nobody makes them?
-
@Gąska you seem to have missed the lots and lots of UWP-hosted video games.
-
@pie_flavor yes I did. As everyone else.
-
@Gąska hundreds of thousands of installs each. Where do the goalposts move next?
-
@pie_flavor hopefully somewhere into "understanding an obvious joke" territory!
-
@Gąska I patiently await your making one.
-
@pie_flavor no need to. Microsoft already made UWP.

Stumbled upon some video that tangentially mentioned RAM latency of about ~60ns. Didn't give it much thought but then remembered "hey, didn't my 16MB EDO RAM back in the late 90s have a latency of 60-70ns??"
Am I comparing two completely unrelated things here? Misremembering something? Obviously memory bandwidth has dramatically increased, but I can't believe that latency is still mostly the same.

Electricity is still electricity...

@Tsaukpaetra Are they at that particular wall already or is it just complexity of the architecture?
Related thought of the day. The speed of light seems like a big deal, but then at, say, 50% drop the speed of the electric field in a conductor is just 14.9(9) cm per nanosecond. The average consumer CPU needs to wait at least a couple clock cycles for the signal to just get through the traces.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in Random thought of the day:
14.9(9) cm
Is that the troll version to write 15 or do the parentheses imply digits of precision?
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in Random thought of the day:

My assumption is the latter but due to the former the latter can't be improved very much without great expense (i.e. redoing from scratch).

This is what I assumed, thus making 14.(9) == 15.

How to grow the install base for your platform:
- Include Solitaire with every Windows installation for decades
- Convert Solitaire to UWP
- Holy shit, UWP gaming is the best selling console of all time!

Am I comparing two completely unrelated things here? Misremembering something? Obviously memory bandwidth has dramatically increased, but I can't believe that latency is still mostly the same.According to this one website I found on SO that looks 90s enough to be credible, it's still in 70ns territory. It says Intel Skylake has RAM latency of "42 cycles + 51 ns", and Ice Lake has "42 cycles + 87 ns". I guess latency isn't that much of a problem when you have megabytes of cache.
If @levicki was still around, he'd probably be able to say for sure. Despite everything wrong with his character, he was still an expert at x86 architecture.

Also, these days it's very easy to bulk order app downloads or positive reviews. And Microsoft has no incentive to block bots from Windows Store.

Pokemon names are different in Japan, but in English version of anime, pokemons make sounds like their English names. That means there was some person whose job was to translate Jigglypuff's song from Japanese to English.
-
I'm pretty sure I once read an interview of the person in charge of the French translation of Pokémon stuff, explaining how they tried to create names that kept the spirit of the original ones.

@HardwareGeek I think I've already mentioned it, but I read it a year or two ago for the first time and I was actually shocked how many things it got spot on. People watching us through telescreens and scolding us for not being attentive? Mon-Fri at 10AM...
