Android storage full, am I screwed?
-
@marczellm I see this thread, but I'm not sure if it's the same tablet.
-
@marczellm I would go into "System > About", record the model, kernel version and anything else that seems relevant and look on http://forum.xda-developers.com/ as they seem to know what the deal is and ask advice on there tbh.
I had to root and de-root my sisters Nexus and I got most of my information from there. I am used to doing loads of crazy stuff like triple booting Windows, FreeBSD and Linux and building my own kernels (back when I was at uni) but I always knew if I could balls up I could do a format on the hard-drive and all would be well again ... not with this stuff.

Well with samsung devices as long as you have the stock rom and can get into download mode you can usually just flash it with ODIN.
Not sure about other manufacturers.

Well and that's my main problem with rooting. The only information available is forums with bad grammar and ugly design which immediately makes me want to back out.
Update: I have found some third party rom that resizes the internal storage to 2 GB. WOOHOO now how do I install this without breaking anything? Reliable instructions please

I would assume such instructions would be with the ROM. Where did you find such a ROM?
-
@dangeRuss On a Hungarian forum. Link from 2014. No instructions, only 3 .img files and one .fw. But I have a guess that the same software that I used to do the official firmware update could work.
There might be newer versions of the same ROM, but the other forum that they linked to doesn't exist anymore, not even in Wayback Machine. I also found a hint on another shady forum that the tablets Bmorn K22 and Pentagram Quadra 7 Ultra Slim are the very same tablet rebranded.
This seems like a very deep

Transfer every app to SD Card that you can.
Already did.
Did anyone find if this tablet is rootable. If so, there may be a way to repartition it and get back the space /maybe even run a custom ROM like CM7 or something.
I can almost guarantee it's one of those prerooted ones, so it's probably as simple as installing SuperSu

Would it be untoward of me to point out that some assholes are pushing an app to "fix" your memory problems?
Make certain that the message you are seeing is not an advertisement popped out of an app or browser. I'm getting a similar message these days, on two different devices, and this is my memory structure:
- ASUS pad: Total storage 27.15GB, Available 24.54 GB.
- Xperia phone: Total space: 11.73GB, Available 7.31 GB.
Yet I've seen a message almost like that, and I am certain it was advertising.
Whatever you do, don't let them install some BS app; people who would do ads like this, who knows what they would install?
One site I encountered posted a full-screen ad on my Chrome that could not be closed; the only option was, "Go ahead and install our app." I finally had to clear all Chrome data to get out of it.
I stopped going to GoComics from my cell because they were posting one of those ads in a pop-up.

Well people, I've found the most unorthodox solution. Uninstall Google Play Services.
The only app that refuses to start without it is Google Drive; but creating Drive shortcuts to files on the home screen still works, and ES File Explorer can act as a Drive client.
@ People who know more than I do: What else am I losing?

Is Android such that only by hacking its bowels can I make it usable?
My Moto G2 is a "proper" android phone (stock Android) and it gets worse every day. It works most of the time, but more and more often now it just hangs for 10 or 20 seconds when I try to do simple tasks (opening the keyboard seems to be its favorite thing to delay). Sometimes it actually happens in the middle of drawing the unlock keypad. You get numbers 1 and 2 and then it pauses for 3 seconds as if trying to remember what comes next. In what kind of fucked up design can this even happen?
Sometimes it's like it suddenly lost 2/3rds of its RAM (memory leak I assume), it starts killing all background processes and Chrome can only keep one tab open even when the pages are not complex. It makes it impossible to do anything, requiring a reboot (and somehow reboots take 4x longer than a desktop computer).
More on topic: I've never actually managed to store anything other than photos and videos on the SD card, despite it being formatted as "internal" and all that. So yes, you are screwed (although I have to agree that 1GB is ridiculously tiny).

Ugh, and that too.
A random forum post with 3 links to file sharing sites, 2 of which are broken and the other one containing a binary file and a windows .exe that requires administrator access does NOT constitute an acceptable source of firmware updates.
-
I would suggest "install a custom ROM", but since I don't recognize that manufacturer, I doubt you'll find any custom-tailored to your hardware.
Of course, the real solution is, buy a new tablet.

Make certain that the message you are seeing is not an advertisement popped out of an app or browser
The real one shows up in your notifications, and when you click on it, it takes you to the system settings screen that shows you where your memory is taken up.

Nope. I successfully updated an app through Play Store after uninstalling Play Services.

Uh, play services are required to do anything with the play store.... You can't use a Google account without play services
-
@sloosecannon Perhaps it just reverted to an old version and didn't uninstall? Cause you really can't do anything Google without play services

Now I can see that it reinstalled magically.
I grabbed the gear icon app in the apps list and dragged it to remove. It asked me
Google Settings is a part of Google Play Services. Do you want to uninstall Google Play Services?
I said yes. It said something like
Cannot uninstall Google Play Services because it is registered as a device administrator.
(remote locking etc.) So it took me to Settings, disabled that administrator permission, and then it said
Uninstalling...
and this freed up the previously mentioned 478 MB so I was able to update my apps, which previously failed because of not enough space!
Now I'm seeing it's back in the Settings/Apps - without asking - , but it only takes up 86 MB.
BTW I enabled the global Location switch in July, I think it's possible that GPS's growth was connected to some kind of location database. I disabled it now.
-
107 MB now.

126 MB

I would just buy an iPhone at this point.

Ah, yeah. So since Play Services is a
/system
app, you can't remove it. You can, however, remove all the updates, and also wipe out the data, via the 'uninstall' action. That's probably what you did.
-
@sloosecannon My phone does the same job as my iPad mini did, i.e. casting shit to my TV and the internet.
Why would I need my iPad if they both do the same.
As a web dev I have to keep a eye on browser stats, and tablets have been dropping for ages.

I dunno man, I still tend to sketch everyone on pen and paper. I tend to write better when doing it pen and paper as well.

Uninstalling updates
Also, when I first launched Maps on this tablet I was prompted to install Google Play Services. So I don't think it's built in.

Don't worry! I can get that on almost any device really, it's just not built-in like on iOS.
