In this case, it was because @julianlam needed some help testing a change he made to his Facebook single sign-on plugin, and only @xaade could do it.

My data plan's limited, but it's also free. So.
-
@ben_lubar Gee, it's almost as if this concept of a "staging server" we presented you with months ago would be useful for something like that.
Everybody: "Hey Ben L, stop bringing down the forum so much!"
Ben L: "I gotta so I can test possibly broken code on production!!!"
Everybody: "Maybe don't do that then?"
When/if you get a professional development job, they're going to need to spend months just undoing the open source methodology damage.
-
@ben_lubar Then he should do it on his own site?
-
@FrostCat is it actually unlimited? and does it cost less than $80 a month?
-
@Magus said in Refreshrefreshrefreshrefresh:

I have a staging server, but it's limited to my local network.

@ben_lubar Ok, but you do realize the reason you just gave was utter cow shit, right?
Testing shit on production is not a good reason to do anything.

Let's go over this.
-
What to deploy in the middle of the day?
- Critical security patches.
- Can't log in patch
- Site is completely borked patch.
-
What do deploy after business hours, preferably on the weekend?
- Everything fucking else
Thank you for your cooperation

Ah - thanks for reminding me. I need to submit my monthly phone bill expense...
-
@bb36e If there's a limit, I haven't hit it--individual phones and the Sprint website have reported 20+GB/month at times.
I've got 3 lines and I think I'm paying $217.99 with tax, so it's a hair under $80/line.
Plus, it's Sprint, which means the coverage isn't as widespread--but it's actually BETTER than AT&T where I work--and I've seen LTE download speeds above 25MBps at times.

@FrostCat 220 USD for 3 lines??
-
@pydsigner That's not an unusual rate in the US for 3 lines with unlimited data and 1500 shared minutes, at the big carriers. The price per line is actually lower than when I was on AT&T, had fewer minutes, and a 3GB cap on line and 300MB caps on the other 2.
-
@FrostCat I'm paying ~45 USD a month for 3 GB of 4G data (throttled afterwards tosomething super low) and unlimited talk/text. AT&T.
-
@pydsigner $50/mo for 1 Gb data, but I think talk/text is unlimited (though I don't do either of those...)...
-
@pydsigner said in Refreshrefreshrefreshrefresh:
3 GB of 4G data
My data's not throttled. Even if I use 20GB.
-
@FrostCat My point is whatever you were doing with AT&T, you were getting gouged bad.
-
@pydsigner said in Refreshrefreshrefreshrefresh:

Oh. Yeah, probably. That was the best/most suitable plan at the time I got it (about 7 years ago).
That's one of the reasons I left AT&T. My Sprint bill, for a far superior plan, is only about $50 more than I was paying those shitweasels.

I'm sure if you use those 20GB in a very short period of time or if you have high bandwidth usage then they'll throttle you. At least, Verizon and bell (and Rogers I think) do that.
-
@bb36e I don't see a reason I'd be likely to do that, though.
-

-
@bb36e Heh. Go back and re-read what I wrote, paying attention to ALL the words.
-
@FrostCat thanks to the scalability of our isomorphic transpiled web.js framework, we can ignore words to make things more minimal and elegant
-
@Tsaukpaetra $0/mo for 900 MB data, and I use Hangouts for talk/text. Anywhere that I have unmetered wi-fi to connect to, I don't have to use any of the mobile data.

You do realize the intentional restarts happen in a way that results in 0 downtime, right? The downtime is due to a bug that we haven't been able to identify yet but you're welcome to join us on the hunt.

Hunt, identify; bah. Just spray malathion everywhere. There's plenty of time to find and identify it after it's dead; it's not like it's an endangered species.

Sounds like a YP.
-
@error Oh, indeed. Ideally the needs of the majority should be served, and that's not me in this instance. I'm just pointing out that "business hours" is not a precisely defined concept when you're discussing a forum (or any other service) with global membership.
Ultimately though... it's a forum, not a life-critical service. Can you (complainers in general, not @error) really not accept occasional downtime in the middle of the day? Don't you have any real work you should be getting on with? I know I do.
-
