Windows 10 cannot into USB tethering
-
I connected my phone to my laptop so that I could share my data connection over USB.
The little network tray icon on the taskbar said that there were connections available, so I clicked on it and was taken to a list of wireless networks. I couldn't find my connection there so I clicked on 'Ethernet', which froze Settings:
The icon later changed to a little monitor, so I clicked on it again:
Now I guess this might be a shitty drivers thing (I'm on an XPS 13) but either way,
-
I gotta try this now! My ROM recently allowed USB tethering as an option and I've always wondered if it were preferable to Wifi...

I do that all the time. Plug phone in, enable tethering (on phone), bingo - network connection on laptop. (Because motel wifi is absolute shit)
-
@Tsaukpaetra the main benefit for me is that my laptop doesn't need wifi enabled, which means longer battery life. of course, my phone is also sucking power out of the USB port, so it might cancel out...

Windows would work great if it weren't for all those drivers and programs it runs too.

Windows works great if you don't upgrade to 8 or 10 like an idiot.
-
@FrostCat, I think that's your cue.
-
@Lorne-Kates dude I know, unfortunately this thing came with win10 and after wiping the original installation (as anyone who buys a new laptop should) I didn't want to risk installing win7 to deal with any driver funkiness. Also this has a high DPI display and I've heard that windows 7's support for that isn't terribly great (not that windows 10 very good either).

Have you tried Linux? I hear it's learning.

Yeah 7 is terrible about that.
8/10 is OK, until you plug it in to a non-high-DPI display. Then you experience hell.

¯\(ツ)/¯New Laptop with 10, touchpad scroll direction is like OSX-tards backwards (Natural direction sheep). Have to go to Mouse/Touchpads->Settings->Advanced Settings->Touchpad Settings->DELL App->Mouse Wheel settings .... do all people have changed to MAC zombies? if not why there is no rant about this here?

Nope. But I'm sure you know me and my setup better than I do :)

Sounds like Dell did something stupid with the drivers there.
My laptop doesn't do "natural scrolling".Well, unless you double-tap to scroll...

Nah, I CBA to waste my time on someone who uses Firefox 22 and probably Windows 2000.
-
@sloosecannon my laptop did that too, and it uses windows 10's built in drivers

8 can handle the entire system being high DPI, or the entire system being normal DPI. It completely pukes if you have one high DPI monitor and one normal DPI monitor, I learned too late after buying my 4k monitor.
10 was supposed to improve this behavior, but it didn't really.

Seems like it. But since I came into it via touch screen usage, I've gotten used to it - and actually prefer it now.
