@boomzilla A forum with zero noticeable bugs versus a forum where you navigate around six of them every time you post (on mobile)? Yeah, maybe they fixed stuff.
I guarantee you that if we were back on Discourse this group would find a bunch of bugs. Not that it matters.
-
@boomzilla Oh, I don't harbor any delusions that it's an "option". But it's hilarious to me that the site you chose is a horrible buggy mess compared to the one you constantly bash on (and feasibility complaining).

It was definitely an improvement in a lot of ways at the time.

If i recall correctly the biggest reason to migrate away from discourse was something about the developer of the previous platform informing many of us in no uncertain terms that we and our kind were persona non grata in his platform....

That is also correct. Nevertheless, the situation was such that forum members were motivated to create outside webpages dedicated to monitoring the poor performance of the site. I think some of them are still around.

yeah. i remember that..... there was a vixen if i recall that bought a domain to host the thing and everything..... I can't quite recall who that might have been but i think she used to keep historical data in a sqlite db she'd let people have if they were curious....

Because (like is said in the beginning of this reply train) before the update, if you clicked a vote button on your own post, it would bring up the vote record dialog
No it didn't.
Yes, it did. I've done it many times, and @Tsaukpaetra confirmed it.
Pretty sure it never did for me - I remember clicking on the up/down buttons multiple times (with no response) until I figured out I was trying to vote-balance my own post.
Using desktop view if it matters.

@ben_lubar It's... uh... well... swiping seems to have been completely and utterly removed.
It sure has, for me too, it seems. Breaking a whole lot of muscle memory, which is going to be infuriating for a while. ... Seriously, @ben_lubar, this is the time you decide to perk up and address a user issue? With a hammer? For @pie_flavor, no less? The sidebar was having some issues, but it was a good idea that just needed to be tweaked.
Why no discussion to see if more than one user wanted that change? Between this and past issues (I don't wish to reignite), I'm starting to think the change management process for this forum is "Whatever @ben_lubar damn well feels like, and fuck everybody else."

Edge on Android doesn't use any of Edge desktop's parsing/rendering/css/JS engines, it uses whatever the replacement for webviews is

The good news is that the change is so simple I can probably make it into a checkbox in your profile (it's just a single class added to
<html>
)

Don't store it in local storage or @pie_flavor will have an aneurysm.

Why is style.js spamming the console with errors?
From this code:
$(function() { new MutationObserver(function(records) { records.forEach(function(record) { record.addedNodes.forEach(function(node) { if ([].some.call(node.classList, function(c) { // <-- here return /^emoji-/.test(c); })) { node.classList.add('emoji'); } }); }); }).observe(document.body, {childList: true, subtree: true}); });
-
@hungrier safe to ignore that. I've got a fix already written.

Welcome to the forums!
-
@hungrier it's saying that
node.classList
is null or undefined.Actually, that's the
TypeError: can't convert undefined to object
that I've also been seeing, which originates instyle.js
. So I guessnode.classList
is undefined.Probably text nodes. ... upon a very quick check, yes, they are text nodes. They aren't elements, and don't have a
classList
.edit: if you just want to make the errors stop, pasting this in the console will temporarily band-aid it:
Text.prototype.classList = function () { return []; };

Fixed emoji class adder.
It's not spamming errors anymore, but it also still doesn't appear to be doing anything.

@heterodox I would say broken muscle memory is less important than repeated action misinterpretation. But yeah, for those magical users who somehow have picometer precision on their taps, why the hell can't they swipe their sidebars? For that matter, why couldn't the old behavior of swiping working if it only started from the edge be restored? Sledgehammer fixes are useful if they fix something that has yet to have an actual solution, but this is not the case. Literally just do whatever the old version was doing. Copy the old version of that particular segment of the code.

A new configuration in a checkbox could be 5min for a coder in one line of code, but it double the testing required for the system to be truly tested. Or in the real world, it creates a lot of untested possibilities.
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
the old behavior of swiping working if it only started from the edge
This was never the way it worked, though. The old system, it would swipe in at random and freeze your scrolling for a few seconds. In the new system, it would still appear when swiping from anywhere, but with almost no accidental triggering (IME), and without the side effect of freezing vertical scrolling.
-
@hungrier Hmm. Must have had spontaneous momentary insanity there when I wrote that, I know exactly what you're talking about with scroll. Although, 'almost no accidental triggering' - I just about died laughing there. It did nothing but accidentally trigger. Sometimes with duplicated taps on the newly opened menu. Still, it should be rewritten to just open if you swipe from the edge.

@pie_flavor
Curious question: Is your normal use case for the mobile forum to "unpinch" to zoom the forum on a regular basis?Reasoning for question: I have (always had) a fair amount of problems with unintentional Tinder mode when I'm unpinch-zoomed in, and the forum's always been a real bitch to return to normal size after you zoom in -- I usually would just give up and reload from my bookmark in a new tab to get back to a usable form. There was a patch a few months ago that kind of made the problem less prevalent when zoomed in, but it didn't completely eliminate it and it feels like Tinder mode when zoomed has gotten worse again lately.
-
@izzion Nope. I never zoom for any reason, unless somebody's playing silly buggers with <small>.

I'm sorry if I seem a bit blakeyish, but I still can't believe something this fundamentally broken on all levels got pushed into production.
When you seem to be the only person seeing this behaviour it's a bit less surprising.
I also was anoyed by unwanted slide-ins from left and right.

Huh, that actually helped? For a second anyways.
I was trying to profile Chrome, but it was OOM killing itself, and now I'm actually able to capture... Oh, nevermind.
Alright, rebooting my phone, lets see what that does...

Not much, but I was able to do a profile of me loading this thread and opening Composer.

I don't know why, but Imagus is no longer working on WTDWTF after the update. Used to be so that I could right-click an image to make a full-size version appear without navigating anywhere, but something's busted because the red outline no longer appears and a right click just brings up the right click menu.

Like missing the case of slidey menus being unaffected by that option in ACP...

You can't middle click the image? The image is supposed to be wrapped in an anchor, and you can click it to view the full-size image.
-
@julianlam I think you misunderstood the entirety of what I said.
Imagus is an extension which lets me open a full-size version of an image. Like this:
https://i.imgur.com/IFFwty0.png
I can zoom it, scroll it, do whatever, without leaving the page I'm on.
Image embeds with HTML or Markdown work fine. But boxed links, like the one in this post? No dice.
This used to work, and now it doesn't.
Yes I could just open the image in a new tab, but there is literally no reason this shouldn't be working.
-
@pie_flavor It seems to me that the onus is on the extension to keep that behavior working, not on the forum.
-
@heterodox it seems to me that if it works literally everywhere else on everything with an image, even on links that lead to a page containing an image, and the only place it doesn't work is here, and it used to, that NodeBB is doing something wrong.
