Android is literally the most important thing to ever happen. Everything MUST be available on Android. Sign up for Google everything now, and you WILL BE ON ANDROID.
Eventually.
A podcast I listen to just go approved to be on Google Music Play (I assume that's their shitty competitor to iTunes which will be shut down in less than 2 years). And his podcast is now live on the web.
But not on Android. Because raisins.
You stay on top of your product, Google. Good jorb. Brillant.

Shitty in what way, exactly? I'm pretty sure the only thing iTunes has on it is selection, but even there they're pretty close.....
-
Updates for Google's Android applications and the OS itself are always staggered; one time my trusty Nexus 5 gets it the day they announce something new, another it'll take a week. Or maybe a month.
Why they feel like this is needed is anyone's guess. :\
FWIW, the only thing for which I use
Google Play Musicthe Music section of the Play Store is the occasional free album Google gives away. Podkicker has been my Android podcast manager for a while now.
-
I've been hearing about podcasts on play music for months now but I haven't seen any option in my app. I've so far assumed it's another case of the uk not getting useful stuff until ages later
-
@Jaloopa Google only officially added podcast support to its Android app two days ago.

It was only release yesterday or so for the US/Canada. It will take at least a month for the new version to swim across the Atlantic unless it encounters an iceberg ... then it could be longer and we'll all receive a free Céline Dion album that can't be deleted.

I wonder too, I use Google Music and I'm pretty happy with it, although I never tried any podcasts.

doubt it, it's actually a decent money maker for Google what with
All Access
that got absorbed intoYoutube Red
.I wasn't going to pay for Youtube Red when it was announced, but i had All Access for the unlimited streaming of literally everything in their library, now that i get that and ads have permanently fucked off on youtube for me that's only a bonus (even if i'm still not convinced the money is being split up the way it should between youtube and the creators there)

Google Play is a great alternative if you don't own a single Apple product and refuse to create an Apple account.

also this.

@LB_ All you need for podcasts is RSS. Why would you use iTunes or Google Play for that?

conveniance on mobile for all musicaltalkthingies to be in one app?
on desktop? desktop makes rather less sense.

@accalia I think dumb people just love giving money to big corporations for nothing.

What money? We are talking about a free service (Google Play Music) that has an additional paying subscription for it's streaming services.
There is this guy around here who always yells at people to shut up about stuff they know nothing about, what's his name again?

If you're trying to insinuate it's me, you're gonna have to back it up with a hell of a quote.

/shrug thaere may be a bit of that.
still $10/month for unlimited access to Google's entire music library is a lot cheaper than buying a couple of CDs a month that i was doing before i started with All Access. I get the same new Music i was getting before, but now it's cheaper.
and now i don't have to deal with ads on youtube for the same $10/month.... i call that a win.
-

No. You're giving money to PewDiePie. That is not a win. That is the opposite of a win.

well i'm not giving up the music. let me know how i can keep all access without having YoutubeRed and i'll do it. i had All Access before Youtube red and i did not choose to be part of red, google just decided it would be a thing. so tell me how i can keep what i had before without being part of red and i'/ll do it.
until then i'm listening to my jams.

@accalia I don't care what you do, but now you are going to be judged by me as a PewDiePie fan, which means that whatever tiny shard of respect I might have had before is now gone entirely.
I bet TobyGames gets some of that dough, too. Ugh. You're horrible.

you've judged me so many other ways before, you have treated me with contempt in so many different ways before, why do you think i give a pair of dingo's kidneys what you think?
now if you'll excuse me i'm going to listen to some more Lindsey Sterling.

I bought a plant. Plants produce oxygen. PewDiePie (allegedly) breaths oxygen. Fuck, I'm a PewDiePie fan!

Lindsey Stirling!
-
@accalia $8/month ;)
I mean I don't like PewDiePie, and don't think that the money I pay for All Access should be shared with YouTube Red, but I can't control that.
One thing I've noticed is that if I tell Google Now to Play CCR or Credence Clearwater Revival it autocompletes that to Creedence Clearwater Revived despite having CCR in their library
-
@accalia said in Sign up for Google Play Music so you'll be available on Android (eventually):

Spotify. Or Amazon Prime music streaming. Or Deezer.
Also, I don't think I get Youtube Red this side of the pond, despite getting verious emails from Google that I would. Not that I ever watch Youtube apart from following a link to a video then closing the tab/app
-
@Jaloopa said in Sign up for Google Play Music so you'll be available on Android (eventually):

none of those allow me to keep Google Play All Access.
Spotify lacks massive amounts of the music i like to watch Amazon Prime Music streaming suffers from the selection issue as well as lacking a mobile client and it loves to pause my music between tracks because i'm already listening to the service (YES! THE TRACK THAT JUST FINISHED!) and deezer is not available in my country.
-
@accalia I wonder if it would be possible to make a streaming system based on torrents. You'd then have access to everything available on TPB.
The first problem that jumps out is that torrents don't tend to download from start to finish, so you could have to wait until an entire song had downloaded before streaming could start. Also the whole problem with finding stuff that has enough seeds. It could be an interesting technical challenge though
-

now you want me to steal my music?
i know there's not a lot of money going to the creators when i pay for the music thanks to all the fat cats that suck on that money like parasites, but at least SOME money goes to the creators.... if i steal NO money goes to the creators.
-_-

I wasn't seriously suggesting it, just thinking outside the box when it comes to the selection problem. Then getting carried away imagining how it would work

huh.... okay i stand corrected there.
they didn't have one the last time i looked at the service.
i see they still have the issue of selection, though admittedly not as bad as they did a while ago.
-

One of the perks to liking a wide variety of genres is that I rarely have problems with selection on streaming services. As long as they have music, in general, I'll probably find stuff I like. So I can't comment there.
They do have all my current favorites, though

Seems like smart streaming services learned from realplayer and download the next song while the current one is playing. Pandora seems to do that, at least.
-
@boomzilla said in Sign up for Google Play Music so you'll be available on Android (eventually):

Play Music does this as well. I mainly stream while on WiFi, if I leave the Wifi range I have at least two songs left.
-
@Luhmann I wonder if you could plan a jogging route that goes past free wifi spots long enough to perpetually have music downloaded and ready...
-

There is literally no possible actual human sentence that can contain this combination of words, unless it includes "as a horrible, painful example".

@Lorne-Kates Exactly. We always learn more from failure than success.
-
@Jaloopa said in Sign up for Google Play Music so you'll be available on Android (eventually):
make a streaming system based on torrents
I've read about such a system once, though I don't recall a name. They prioritized early pieces instead, where normal torrents prioritize piecces few peers have. Additionally they verified blocks using signatures instead of hashes, so the torrent file (with appropriate key info) could be created before the entire stream is created, and even live streams work.
-
@Jaloopa Popcorn Time did it for movies. it seems it's not that hard. but you'll get automatically sued.

You should watch like three minutes of PewDiePie. If he's going to insult you for something you might as well do it.
And then you can say you've done it and never do it again.
-

Actually, there's an anti-achievement. It's called "What the heck is wrong with you?"
-
@FrostCat FWIW, I've never watched a full episode of the Simpsons either; it used to always be on when I was mid-commute, and now I basically don't watch TV at all. (Gotta keep up with the WTDWTF threads!)
