It addresses that in the product page.
but still - imagine how much time and energy you could save just having to press one key instead of two. And doesn't this look nicer?
If you type "#" regularly, you could save literally seconds every day.
It might not seem like much, but it all adds up. Just imagine being 90 years old, and realizing your life could have been a whole 30 minutes longer if you had only bought a HashKey™ when you were younger. Plus that dangling wire makes your computer look much nicer.

@MathNerdCNU There's a plastic plate that sits on top of the phone's screen
-
@anonymous234 okay, the way this resin works is that it solidifies when exposed to bright white light. Your phone happens to be capable of producing bright white light in distinct and highly complex patterns, a feature which is the basis of one of the more costly components of a traditional resin 3D printer. Using something most people already have instead lowers the cost dramatically, and the rest is mostly just servo to move the completed print up and down, the software to drive it, and a proper device design to keep light out.
Here's a video of it in action, if that helps:

-
@anonymous234 Economically it does not.
The top part has some kind of glass plate it uses to glom onto the slime and pull it upwards. The phone draws bright white shapes which cause the slime to harden. I have no idea how you're supposed to un-glom the slime from the top plate when it's done, they don't show that.
I imagine the end result can't produce anything better than toys. And it takes hours and hours and hours to make anything, hours during which you can't use your phone. It's not like you're going to be fixing your car with parts from this crap. Then again, it's only $100. So.
Also they built the app for Windows Phone, so kudos for that. Even Steam with millions in revenue seems incapable of that amazing feat.

Wow I hope that one's a scam, because if he actually does release the product with claims that "you don't have to do any training to scuba dive!" he's going to be responsible for actual deaths. (The scuba diver training isn't just on how to operate the scuba equipment, moron. You're going to give people the bends!)

Depends on how thick you want to make it. Also, make it while you sleep.

It's not like you're going to be fixing your car with parts from this crap.
There are plenty of non-industrial uses for 3D printing. Hell, their advertisement video even gives many examples, several of which are not toys, such as stamps of different kinds, jewelry, and art.

I think it's still cheaper to get a used ipod touch plus this thing than the next cheapest 3D printer...?
-
@Yamikuronue Well I'm me and not anybody else, but I don't see a point to buying ANY 3D printer that can only print toys.
-
@Fox Screens are not that expensive. If this costs $99, they should be able to produce a "smartphoneless" version for $150 at most. Seems to me like it's just a gimmick.
-
@blakeyrat I've been wanting one for a while just for propwork, to be able to make parts shaped exactly right.
-
@Yamikuronue Well I hope you buy a lot of goo because I bet they break instantly if an actor so much as touches them the wrong way.

Extremely high DPI screens are only $50?

Hey I found one!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mikekh/youloox-awesome-holographic-computer?ref=category_popularGood news is they were morons and set the goal so high that no one will actually lose money over their scam.
-
@Fox I know for a fact you can buy a Nokia Lumia 1020 touchscreen for $125. As a plain ol' consumer, I didn't put in a factory order. They don't need the touch part for this. And it's pretty high-res.
They would however need to write firmware to communicate with it and also a driver for every OS they want to support, so that cost would go way up.
-
@Fox I thought Kickstarter required working prototypes now? What happened to that?
The video doesn't spend one millisecond talking about what hardware will be used to deliver this experience. (I wager Microsoft has spent ten times their Kickstarter costs developing HoloLens, which is kind of what it looks like they're going for?)
The demo of the two monsters in the parking lot also reminds me of that fucking terrible SeaQuest DSV episode where a magical computer sends them into the future where the only two people left alive are two teenagers who do nothing but control VR robots and fight each other all the time. Fuck that episode was terrible. It's WORSE than the synopsis I wrote implies, believe me.
-
@Fox It works with lots of phones that don't have "extremely high DPI" screens, so I doubt you need "extremely high DPI" screens if you built it into it.
-
@Fox See, if you want to do a scam KS, you set the goal super low. Like this guy and his 6 USD goal campaign.

@blakeyrat They could get around it by offering an SD slot or USB slot. My embroidery machine does that: it lets you figure out how to get the file made and onto a USB, it just reads it once it's there. And it only accepts one filesystem (I can't remember if it's FAT or NTFS) and one file format at that.

Still a lot of firmware work to drive a monitor, no matter the size. Then again, a micro-Linux PC is only $35, so, and using one of those you could mostly do it in software, so... possible?

- resolution goes down as DPI decreases
- Most smartphones have at least 300 DPI, which is quite a lot for a screen, or was last I checked.

Now that is a good point right there. And that price is assuming you get a Pi. There are cheaper alternatives.

As if I'm prepared to believe you wouldn't create an army of tiny Godzillas and have them battle an army of tiny Mothras if you could.

@FrostCat Pfft. Mothra's stupid as shit. The solo movies where Mothra went up against that dragon were kind of cool, though. I don't think anybody's made a toy of him.
EDIT: holy FUCK here's what his puppet head looks like:
That's fucking terrifying.

@blakeyrat said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
@Fox I doubt the plastic slime has a resolution of 300 DPI.
Based on their specifications, either the resin or the actuator(s?) has a higher resolution than any phone screen.
They list the X-Y resolution as up to 0.042 mm, which is about 600 DPI, and the Z resolution as 0.032mm, which is equivalent to about 790 DPI.

EDIT: Yes, yes it is.
And I already have the best Gamera available, too. So there.

She-Hulk is a different character, actually:
See. Obviously a different character. They don't even have the same hair... COLOR, I mean. They don't have the same hair color. Totally different. And their clothes are a little more than slightly different.

I could never figure out Gamora's superpower, I guess "twirls a lot while fighting" is close enough to a superpower now? I guess Buffy got by with it. "Kind of sexy I guess if you're into that body type"? Wait, Buffy had that superpower too! Hm...
OH WAIT! That was Zoe Saldana, who was somehow super-hot in Star Trek but not-very-hot-really in Guardians of the Galaxy. Maybe the makeup? I dunno.
She was super-hot in Star Trek though.

Gamora doesn't have a superpower, per se. She's just an alien from a race that is better than humans at fighting - faster reflexes, stronger, etc. - and then she got adopted by Thanos, Avatar of Death, and if I recall correctly he did some enhancements on her similar to - though not as extreme as - what was done to the blue chick with the robot everything. At the very least, he trained her to be a better fighter.
So she's kind of like the Black Widow of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure those lines on her face are supposed to indicate some cyborg enhancements courtesy of her beloved father.
