@blakeyrat gold-plating doesn't cost $30,000 unless you're gold-plating ... like ... a whole army.
A quick google suggests that gold plating costs around $3/in2, so based on that, $30,000 should plate a surface area of around 70 ft2.

the kind of douche who has their smartphone mounted illegally right in the middle of your windshield
What's illegal about that? They could be using it for GPS.
I have a windshield mount for mine. It's really handy when I need to use it for GPS, and when I don't, I use it for a dashcam instead.

Probably some progressive Washington State law he's proud of.

Depends on where you're in. I think in California, anything that could potentially obstruct the operator's view, including but not limited to stickers, fuzzy dice, and GPS units not built into the the dash, are illegal.

What about the rearview mirror? I suppose it gets a pass because it's built-in?

Ok?
Thanks I guess?
It almost feels like you're trying to make some kind of point, but then you're not. Just droppin' in to tell us all how much gold plating costs. What a useful service.
@anotherusername said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):

It's illegal in Washington State.
@anotherusername said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):

It doesn't matter what they're using it for.

Then you're an asshole.

That doesn't obstruct the view, that expands it by like an additional 100 degrees.

..retail cost is listed as $78, so.. thanks?
$3/square inch on a 73 inch long cable definitely impacts the price.
-
@blakeyrat said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):

Well, that's fucking retarded, and it's not illegal in my state (look at me, I just checked) so put a cork in it.

I don't appreciate being called an asshole (or a liar) because your stupid opinion is different than mine.

An asshole would say that.

Oh, the onebox was misleading then because I thought the $48,200 was the price. It looks like any other super-expensive cable from Amazon, and it's not obvious from the oneboxing that it's a fundraiser or that's the amount they've raised.
-
@anotherusername Yeah, that onebox is shit
-
You know next time, if you don't want people to be confused to bejeezus and back when reading your ramblings, you might try to put some kind of point into your post instead of just making it a completely-offtopic helpful factoid about the cost of gold plating.
-

Sure, but asphinctersezwat.

No, it says "connect with 1 hand", but it's easy to miss the 1.

$78 for two. It's actually only $39.
The USB and Lightning (sorry, "Alpha") tips have different pinouts, but the one crappy picture you can see of the cable end doesn't look like it would work with both type of tips. I wonder how well that will work.
-
@FrostCat they're not intercompatible.
-
@anotherusername Ah. That's what I figured but I CBA to look. Thanks.
That's probably due to insufficient design, but whatever.

@Fox Dude I backed the largest crowd-funded(I think) thing ever and that thing is a giant garbage fire at this point. I have very low expectations.
Were you part of that 'solar freakin' roadways' idiocy?
-
@theBread He's one of those suckers who got suckered into buying fake spaceships from Chris Roberts. I think the project was called "Sucker Quest: Born Every Minute".
-
@blakeyrat Wasn't that guy doing a demo on the Colbert show a few months back? It sounded interesting, but way too big
-
@theBread It's big enough that he's utterly incapable of actually implementing the game as-sold, and he's a big enough blow-hard that he's utterly incapable of admitting to it.
-
More from the garbage fire
I thought about this one, took one look at my current watch and thought no. Near indestructible was the stipulation for this watch. That salesman was worth the time and hassle. The watch is battered but still working.
-
I think this video adequately explains Kickstarter:

It turns out there was a bigger KS than that--that $400 cooler that raised $13M, then started selling it on Amazon before shipping to backers, then told the backers that if they coughed up another $97, they would "guarantee" to get it before July 4th this year.
The Q&A on Amazon is hilarious.
-
@FrostCat You mean this thing?
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ryangrepper/coolest-cooler-21st-century-cooler-thats-actually/posts/1567965Looks like they went to the Lucky Palmer school of business lizard management.
I was going to respond to an asshole-rat but fuck that, that's feeding the trolls.
-
@MathNerdCNU Yup.

@FrostCat said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):

That's not even fucking CLOSE.
Star Citizen has raised $110 million as of March, 2016.
-
@blakeyrat I thought we were only talking about the KS. Wikipedia suggested that raised about $4M.
-
@blakeyrat You wouldn't get the bends from that, but as the website offers no explanation of what percentage of oxygen would be inhaled it's dodgy as fuck.
Not to mention the complete lack of information about why it's considered a rebreather when there is nothing there about scrubbing filters.

@Fox Ha, I wonder how they define "Repitions"
Also... There's a strange number of .GIF files on their page, I wonder if they're ready for turn-of-the-century technology...
-
@Tsaukpaetra also their equations, in addition to saying nothing useful about their product, are littered with unmatched parentheses.
-
@Fox I'm thinking they could team up with Mr. Busco Quadnary. Some magic might occur!
-
@Fox Why are they monks?
EDIT: yes all other encryption standards are based on 8-bit computers. ... apparently?
You know it's great if they have a new cipher that's really strong, but what's the actual product? Ciphers aren't products.
-
@blakeyrat an encrypted cloud storage. Because SSL is unsecure. So they're replacing it with cloud storage. Or something.
-
@Fox said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
Because SSL is unsecure. So they're replacing it with cloud storage.
Which is probably just as unsecure.
-
@Fox do you have any idea how long it takes to generate the 262144 bit RSA keys they use?
-
@Fox AES only encrypts documents?
Someone never used Wi-Fi ...
-
@aliceif said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
@Fox AES only encrypts documents?
It's the current most common block cypher. It doesn't encrypt documents at all, it encrypts short sequences of bytes.
-
@aliceif That's not even remotely close from the dumbest thing in that video.
-
@El_Heffe said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):

I think you're missing the best part, though. They say SSL, a connection encryption method, is unsecure. So now they're making a secure data storage method. In the cloud. And it's supposed to be for sharing and stuff. So either they leave files encrypted during transfer, which means that anyone you share your files with will need to install something to open them, or the files are sent over the internet regularly anyway. They also go on about keeping your personal data secure, but nothing about their cloud storage system will improve the security of online stores or social media.
-
@Fox I kind of assumed they'd write a DropBox-esque client for it. But who knows, maybe they are that stupid.
-
@blakeyrat said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
But who knows, maybe they are that stupid.
I'm going with this one. Also, dropbox files can be shared to people who don't have dropbox installed.
-
@blakeyrat said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
maybe they are that stupid.
Yes, but they're still clever enough to convince 23 people to part with money.
-
@loopback0 They got a female with boobs to do the video.
That accounts for the 23 people.
-
@blakeyrat That'll do it. I've not seen the video.
-
@Fox said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
They say SSL, a connection encryption method, is unsecure.
When someone asserts that, they either know so little about what they're talking about that you might as well just profit off them by selling them tinfoil hats, or they actually know a seriously large amount about cypher suites and the pros and cons of trust chain management, in which case they already own a tinfoil hat.

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready, because this could be THE BEST KICKSTARTER EVER:
We will fly a large, fully loaded aircraft into a WTC like structure. Goal is to recreate 9-11
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7Olnv9RQmE
Many people want to know more about 9-11. We are like a Mythbusters for September 11th. It's an important project for many reasons. Many people doubt various details of 9-11. As the world has changed our trust in government and media has declined significantly. We want to see for ourselves. We don't need people to guide our thinking. In this project we will recreate 9-11 to the best of our ability given the funds raised. Our ultimate goal is a fully loaded 767 and a similar structure to the WTC. We will crash the fully loaded (with fuel) plane (complete with black box) into the building using autopilot at 500 MPH
All that for just $1,500,000 USD (flexible funding enabled, of course). I don't know how close to the WTC you can get with that, but my guess is "not very".
-
@anonymous234 They're going to be pretty disappointed when they figure out how much a 767, even an old worn-out one, is worth. If they can get 100% funded, they have enough there-- maybe-- for one of its engines. Maybe.
Finding a building scheduled for demolition shouldn't be too tough, but finding one that's large enough for a 767 autopilot to hit, might be pretty challenging, and finding one with the same "core" construction as the WTC towers will be virtually impossible.
More likely it's yet another indie gogo scam and this guy thinks (probably correctly) that 9-11 conspiracy theorists are easy marks.
EDIT: or this guy is such truther that he can't even type the word "trust" without it accidentally coming out as "truth":
I've succeeded because I form real teams of people that truth each other.
