Re: 4 Dimensional Operating System (Kickstarter)
In other Kickstarter news, scaling back from 4 dimensions to 3 can yield much better results.

I'm skeptical. Looks like you need to use your phone as part of the printer(only watched part of video) but I also backed several nostalgia-fueled video game Kickstarters of which 1 has delivered in any sense of "on-time". The printed "Mario" clone is biggest red flag to me, but neat-o if the product manages to produce.
-
@Fox $219 for a pet collar? I know it's GPS, but seriously, that is expensive.

Yes. Apparently, it uses the light from the screen to cure the resin.
-
@HardwareGeek Assuming this ships, I can't wait until someone prints something phallic and purple and it doesn't unseal/unbind from the phone.
-

They have a video further down where you can watch them printing their "egg" model with an iphone.
-
@RaceProUK yup. I was mostly paging accalia for the name of the collar, though. :P
-

They've got 1.6 million dollars already. If it doesn't ship, there will at the very least be a highly amusing tale involved. For everyone who didn't put over a hundred dollars into that pot, anyway. On its face, it looks like they are committed to fulfilling pledges on time, though, so as long as they aren't lying through their teeths, all should be well.

Also, I gather that there is a transparent screen between the phone and the resin.

@Fox Dude I backed the largest crowd-funded(I think) thing ever and that thing is a giant garbage fire at this point. I have very low expectations.
-
@MathNerdCNU Would that be Mighty No. 9?
-

Let's start a getting pool! I bet within a month of project completion they will have an issue with the manufacturer. After that, there will be an issue with the "heat sink" and so the story goes on...

The largest kickstarter is Chris Roberts' scam, Star Citizen.
They have shipped about 1/10th of the game though. In a buggy, incomplete way.

As far as i know, none of the top 10 crowdfunding campaigns ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest_funded_crowdfunding_projects ) are giant garbage fires as of yet. What are you referring to?
-
@blakeyrat Do you have to rub it in?
-
@blakeyrat Oh, wait, I was thinking of Fractured Space, not Star Citizen. I've not been keeping up with Star Citizen at all; is it really that bad?
-
@MathNerdCNU Haha I think you're a fucking SUCKER to give money to ANY Kickstarter.
Look, here's how it works, simple two-step process:
-
If the product is actually viable, you can just wait for the other morons to kickstart it first then buy it in a store like, you know, normal. Hell, for many Kickstarted projects (including Oculus and Ouya to give two examples) you can buy it in a store before the Kickstarter backers get theirs shipped.
-
If it's not, well, then step one means you can laugh at all the morons who gave money to pre-order a non-viable product and now have nothing.
-

I... don't think there even is a heat sink, actually.
-

- Usually there is a substantial discount for Kickstarter backers
- If everyone did this, many wouldn't have the funds to get started. That's why it's called Kickstarter.
-
@blakeyrat I backed it prior to the Kickstarter when it appeared like a crowd-funded + private-funds project. Hind-sight is 20/20 and I'm only out $60.
I really, really hope when it goes whale-tits up one of the code-monkeys write a front page article.
-
@Fox The thing with Kickstarter is that it's essentially a gamble. You should only give money you're prepared to lose. Too many people treat it like some guaranteed thing and then get pissy when their money is taken but they get nothing.
-
@Fox said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
is it really that bad?
It's called a hustle, sweetheart.
-
@loopback0 And they always get pissy at Kickstarter, who go out of their way (quite rightly) to distance themselves from the issue as much as possible
-
@Fox said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
If everyone did this, many wouldn't have the funds to get started. That's why it's called Kickstarter.
If the product were viable, they'd have real investors and wouldn't need Kickstarter (EDIT: or they'd just use Kickstarter for advertising, like Pebble does). If the product were viable and they can't get investors, then that's a huge flashing red warning sign. It usually means the guy running the company is a douchenozzle.
I will say to be fair, Star Citizen looked like a good gamble.
-
@Fox said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
I... don't think there even is a heat sink, actually.
If it's a hoax, you can bet there will be! All of the bunk projects I've contributed to that failed (granted, I don't contribute to many) have all started with the above "updates". Something goes wrong with the manufacturer. Something went wrong with the heat sink. Our manufacturer was being a dick so we now have to look for another one. We found another manufacturer and are in negotiations. The story goes on for up to two years before they stop updating entirely. Keep in mind the 3-5 month gap between each of those sentences....
-
@loopback0 thus far I've only backed two projects that failed to deliver, and both were killed by Kickstarter before funds were transferred because it turned out that they were doing shady shit. I did have another that failed to deliver on time (@Tsaukpaetra explained why, heh) but it was eventually delivered. Other than that, I don’t see many issues with KS. There are bogus campaigns, but most of them are obviously bogus. The sneakier ones are apparently weeded out by KS pretty quickly.
-
@Fox That may be the case, but you're paying money for a product that doesn't exist and couldn't get backing via more traditional methods. I'm not saying people shouldn't give money, just that they shouldn't get pissy when it gets taken and they get nothing.
-
@loopback0 said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
more traditional methods
I've found that these usually involve appealing to business majors. Plenty of great ideas don't appeal to business majors, and plenty of people with great ideas can't or won't deal with business majors well.
-
@Fox said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):

Except the ones that aren't quite so obvious. For example, Tango PC was technically capable of being produced and delivered; I mean, it probably wouldn't actually perform they way they claim, but we've got NUC units for a fraction of the asking price, surely it wouldn't be hard to re-skin such a unit?
The latest project (Actually, it's on IndiGOGO) I've pledged is sProjector "The first powerful Mini TV projector", and so far it's traveling the scam road pretty well.
I've filed a report against them through the hidden you-gotta-jump-duck-and-roll-to-get-here Report A Campaign page, but the only thing I've got in return is an automated "We're looking at it. Don't message us again" reply.Time will tell on this one, If they open up a campaign on Kickstarter I'll accept my money is as good as stolen.
-
@Tsaukpaetra that's... unfortunate. I'd not heard that any of those sorts actually got away with it; every one I've seen has been dealt with by its respective crowdfunding site.
-
@Fox said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):

I have hope, thanks for your kind words.
But, as @blakeyrat said, I don't expect my ~$440 to ever return me physical product.
I just don't know if I can claim it as "Charitable donations" at this point on my taxes...
-
@Tsaukpaetra I'm backing two Kickstarters right now:
- Spark the Electric Jester, which is being made by LakeFeperd, who's made some pretty popular Sonic fangames
- Thimbleweed Park, being made by a couple of people who worked on the early Monkey Island games
I'm reasonably confident these two projects will actually be shipped; still, between the two, I've only pledged about $70-$80. And that's only because I pledged enough for Thimbleweed Park to get my name in a phonebook and record an answerphone message. So if that game is delivered, I'll be in it! :)
-
@Tsaukpaetra You gave $440 to a project on INDIE GOGO?
Goddamned man. I have 4 bridges to sell you. Buy my bridges.
Hell, even their Indie Gogo page is a scam: 4K projector?! 1000 lumens? For this cheap? And it runs 5 hours on a battery?
(Down in the FAQ):
Native resolution is 1920x1080. Projector supports HW decoding and you can watch upto 4K video
Haha, so by "4K" what they mean is "1080p at best".
-
@blakeyrat said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
You gave $440 to a project on INDIE GOGO?
No, dimwad, I gave $440 overall to projects on Indiegogo.
Expanded, I suppose I could have said:I don't expect my ~$440 to ever return me a single physical product from the campaigns I have contributed to.
Can you read my mind now?
-
@blakeyrat said in 3 Dimensional Phone Charging Dock++ (Kickstarter):
Haha, so by "4K" what they mean is "1080p at best".
Yeah, I assumed it would be downscaled, like almost all HDMI-capable projectors are.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Dude, if you gave $4.40 to shit on Indiegogo I'd call you a gullible idiot. Indiegogo is nothing BUT scams.
Now let's talk about those bridges, I can let you have them pretty cheap...
-

Can you burn them as well? I expect a discount for bulk bridges though...
-
@Tsaukpaetra And then we have campaigns like these...
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/822004190/otaku-club-house?ref=nav_search
Sounds like a great idea. The goal is practically unreachable, though. Every big crowdfunding campaign (and any which earns over a million dollars is, I think, a big campaign) has one thing in common; the resulting product can go to the donors. This one is asking for over a million dollars to build a club in Texas. The donors would have to go to the product. And to top it off, I'm fairly certain they designed it in Second Life. I love SL, don't get me wrong, but it's not a very good way to design real buildings. Even ignoring the lack of professionalism, SL has no physics engine capable of ensuring that your building will even fucking stand.
So it's pretty much guaranteed to fail, even if it is legit. Which it probably isn't, because I don't think the maker(s?) is(are) planning it out thoroughly enough to ensure success.

OK, what the shit?
Can some scientist explain if this makes any sense? Both physically and economically.

This is star trek level shit here.

I used to be subscribed to the subreddit /r/shittykickstarters.
I had to stop reading it because it just made me angry seeing people throw millions of dollars day after day at INCREDIBLY FUCKING OBVIOUS scams.
It's always the same things:
- Incoherent ramblings by people with clear mental problems (like the 4 dimensional operating system from the other thread), or from actual 6 year old children, often accompanied by a dozen drawings in pencil or MS Paint.
- Impossible things that are just fantasies by people with no idea of how physics or society work. Often the same recurrent ideas (a battery that lasts forever! A device to generate energy from humant movement! An artificial intelligence! A free energy machine! Create world peace by giving people yoga lessons! Put solar panels on [thing]!). Sometimes they get funded, and the creator actually tries their best, and it all ends up as one big embarrassing failure.
- Impossible things, except actual scams instead of simple ignorance. These are worse because the author keeps releasing fake videos and extending their release dates in order to milk more money from people. And anyone who points out how impossible it is is just a "hater".
- Reselling stuff from Alibaba.
- Ideas that are, quite simply, stupid.
Edit: I forgot
- People who think others will pay them money for the privilege of being able to watch them read a book or play a game. "I need $2,000 to buy a gaming PC and make more let's play videos for my 3 subscribers!"

German keyboards have a dedicated # key.

@aliceif So do UK ones. Macs need to use something like option + 3
