Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems

Notification "bell" think says I have 5 unread notifications. Only three are shown when I pull down the menu. So if you "notified" me of something this morning, there's a 40% chance I didn't see it.
Did you find the scrollable part of that dropdown? Because there's just not enough space to show more than a couple of notifications

If someone upvotes multiple posts by you that are in the same thread, there's only one notification which is counted multiple times.
In other words, you probably didn't miss anything important.
-
@Jaloopa Yes; I scroll down. It had like 3 Unread notifications and another 3 read ones, IIRC.

I guess it would be stupid to ask: why!?
-
I was going to post a let's play video today, but I can't for the life of me find my Blakeyrat's Videos Thread. Search is completely incompetent at finding anything, AFAICT. I suspect it's only searching on the first word of the search string? I don't know for sure. But I typed the title in as an almost exact match, and it don't come up in search.

Also, opening a notification in new tab doesn't seem to clear it. Multiple tabs generally seem to do odd things to notifications, will need to investigate further.

The onebox thing (which didn't exist yesterday but does today? I guess?) oneboxes Twitch streams even if they aren't on their own line. That's going to make posting future twitch streams nearly impossible-- NOBODY using Twitch wants an embedded streamer, guys, you want a plain ol' link.
On Discourse I could get a plain ol' link by just ensuring I had other text before the link. Here? It does a onebox anyway. Wrong. Bad. Stupid. No. Who coded this? You're wrong. You suck. Talk to a SINGLE Twitch user before subjecting them to your dumb wrong ideas.

Well, you can post it as a markdown link or a manual
<a>
tag.
Still shitty, though.
-
@blakeyrat OH FUCK ME. It's even worse.
IT HAS THE "AFTER PASTING A YOUTUBE URL, TYPING CAUSES A DDOS TO YOUTUBE'S EMBED SERVER!" BUG! JUST LIKE DISCOURSE!
This is not better than Discourse. This is the same Discourse bugs over again. Whoever upgraded to this onebox version, did you spend even a NANO-SECOND ensuring it fixed the bugs in the Discourse one? Jesus. This is shamefully bad.
-
@aliceif said:

Or I could just not post my streams here anymore, which is what I'll probably do because all these stupid barriers are being stacked in front of me.
Oh. And that text is a link. Because of course it is. Why wouldn't it be a link? Just because I didn't make a link in the toolbar or by typing any tags? Pfft. That's old-fashioned thinking, Blakeyrat. Here in 2016 all text is a link. You don't have to make it a link, it just starts out that way.

When you post, it's supposed to go to the bottom of the topic so you can view your own post. Instead it merely goes to the bottom of the loaded posts (about 20 posts down) and you have to scroll down to find your own post. (Assuming you want that behavior, which you don't.)

I was considering offering to not have twitch URLs oneboxed, but that seems like too much work now.

Fuck you, @ben_lubar already fixed it.
-
@boomzilla If you don't want to be an admin or moderator on this site, there's an easy solution to that problem.
Me? Personally, I'd like a little discussion and testing before we enable plugins which break tons of shit (and grandfathering the breakages to threads that existed before the plugin did!) and cause our site to be a terrible citizen by making it trivial for anybody to do an DDoS attack on YouTube's servers.
-

He said he did.

I still see the same problem on my screen. Whatever.

That's not the problem.

Yeah, twitch.tv is on the "domains to skip" list. But I think oneboxes are cached, so if it already built the onebox for a link, it might stay around while new ones don't show up.
-
@boomzilla Well I had a scathing reply to this but when I tried to post it, I bumped the mouse button that goes Back, and when I hit Forward, I ended up with this:
So I guess Boomzilla wins this one.

Ok.
Could we fix that? Because my thread's still broken.
This isn't like me being fickle or changing my mind. I never wanted Twitch links to be embedded in the first place. Not on Discourse, not here. And since I'm the only one on this site who even uses Twitch, AFAIK, I find it kind of insulting that nobody bothered to ask me about it.
-
@blakeyrat Here's what I see when I follow your link.
And when I post the link here, I only see the link:

BL fixed something in the meantime ...
<BenLubar> oh wait <BenLubar> I blacklisted twitch.tv but not www.twitch.tv
-
@boomzilla Yes, it's fixed now.
-
-
@blakeyrat YouTube is still broken. It needs to be blacklisted until the composer no longer reloads the YouTube frame EVERY KEYPRESS.
Right now our site is a jackass. It needs to not be a jackass.

That is a bit unreasonable. There are a multitude of sites that only one person on these forums use or link to. You simply cannot expect every single user to have their own vetting process for all of this. We adopted a new system, we see what breaks and we fix it. If we did what you wanted, deployment and switchover would have taken until 2020.

I disagree.
If the content of my posts is going to be fucked-over my some plugin, I'd like to have the opportunity to say something about it BEFORE it happens. The default action is always "do nothing". In this case, someone used "fuck up twitch.tv links" as the default action. That shouldn't happen.
I'm glad it was fixed as quickly as it was, but it shouldn't have happened in the first place. This onebox plugin is broken. And while we don't have a choice about most of the NodeBB bugs which are in the core product, we can get rid of that buggy-ass plugin.
And yes I am going to call-out the people who decided to install it despite (apparently) even BOTHERING to run a simple QA pass on it. We don't have control over this shitty forum's developers, but we can do quality work ourselves at least. Come on, people.

@blakeyrat said:
I disagree.
Because of course you do.

Spread that across every user on this site. What system do you propose for manage that clusterfuck of requirements? How should the vetting process work? How much time do you think that would take?
Stop being a special snowflake. Report bugs, wait for them to get fixed, stop being a cockhole.
-
@Polygeekery I'm happy with the amount of bugs we have now. I don't want the admins of this site making new ones like they did when they installed that plugin.
It seriously doesn't bother you at all that the bug count is going up and not down?
-
I see this post, and I see the highlighted skype on taskbar, and I click it.
-
We really should have a test forum set up for trying out new plugins before we install them here. That's like, server admin 101.

Next time we'll make sure we turn on our telepathy.
-
@Yamikuronue We should also start with everything off by default and turn things on. Instead of just installing a smorgasbord of shit all at once.
-
@boomzilla If I'm expected to have telepathy to use this forum, it's only fair you be expected to as well.

Have you seen the "someone bookmarked your post" notifications....
Telepathy is a requirement for use.
-
@boomzilla I see that your personal dislike of me is also getting in the way of doing anything about the YouTube DoS bug in the preview pane. Awesome. I'm glad that because you don't like my opinions, we're currently hosting software that is just this side of malware.
-
@xaade said:

I can't even parse that sentence.

@blakeyrat fixed
-
@blakeyrat It's not a personal dislike of you. It's a personal dislike of your need to act like as much of an asshole as possible at all times.
If you can't see the problem with your narcissistic request to have everything run by you after you vociferously complain about not wanting to be part of testing or QA then I don't think I can explain it to you.

OIDs. For policies from a quick google search.
-
@Polygeekery So this post has one upvote, but says that both @kt_ and @boomzilla voted for it. Does it only show who upvoted?
-
Whereas this post has 12 upvotes, but says
ben_lubar, Tsaukpaetra, sloosecannon, Polygeekery, asdf and 6 others
Which is only 11 people

I see a downvote in my view, which is probably mod-only.

@RaceProUK Maybe someone upvoted it after I clicked the number? No idea.
-
Now when I click the link to go to the last unread post in a thread, I get some kind of inexplicable rainbow nightmare on (presumably?) the last read post. Why?
-
@blakeyrat I guess the idea was to flash the message you are navigating to. Then alicef got a hold of the CSS editor...
-
@blakeyrat Ben did it to try and improve visibility of which post NodeBB dumped you to. He mentioned it here in the Status thread.
-
@ChaosTheEternal I don't want a rainbow nightmare. Just highlight the background or draw a box around it.
