@Tsaukpaetra said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
Did you, or did you not type the words
Yah I typed a cute little poem to fit into Ben L's table/sentence/thing.
It wasn't directed at anybody specific at all. Read it. Read the words literally. Tell me who that cute little poem insults.
For the billionth time: it's not MY fault if your brain is inserting words that aren't there on the screen. I don't know how else to put it, or how many times I have to repeat it until the concept sinks in.
If I had wanted to call Ben L a retard, I would have. I didn't. I wanted to write that cute little poem, because I thought I was funny. Had I had the telepathic powers to know half the people on this board would have mentally inserted extra words into it and construed it differently, do you think I would have hit Submit on that? Fuck no I wouldn't have.
But I am not telepathic, I don't have precognition, and I can't predict the strange ways in which your brain apparently operates.
@Tsaukpaetra said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
You can't prove that. The burden of that is on you.
How would I prove that? Again: no telepathy.
All I can do is explain it, which I've done a billion times but you're still posting this shit so that doesn't work either.
If you can just tell me what to say to make this all go away, I will. What is that magical thing I'm supposed to be saying to PROVE that by writing those words I didn't mean to communicate some meaning that's not contained in those words. Gooboofooboo? Is that the magical thing?
-

-
@blakeyrat I posted a shrug embedded inside a shrug and then explained it with a really big picture of a shrug.
Here, have a Lenny: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

@ben_lubar I know what a shrug is, I don't know what meaning you're attempting to convey to me. Instead of just inferring something, I'm asking.

That's because there's no way I could possibly have known that meaning would be inferred by other people. I'm not accepting the "consequences" because they are fundamentally unjust.
I never typed what Ben L said I typed. I never desired to type it. I never even thought it.
Yet I'm being blamed.

False.
Edit: Actually, just tried an idea: I used my powers of communication to ask a few bystanders what they thought I meant if I posted what was shown in that picture.
They said I was being highly disrespectful and rude, but that it's the internet so enjoy the rage you'll get from it! (Yes, she winked, how cute)

Yah I typed a cute little poem to fit into Ben L's table/sentence/thing.
It wasn't directed at anybody specific at all. Read it. Read the words literally. Tell me who that cute little poem insults.Your post as a whole was directed at Ben. You replied to Ben's post. The post began with an @ mention that you knew would cause him to be notified of your post. Even though his username was inserted automatically by NodeBB, not by you personally, you could easily have avoided directing the post at Ben by replying to the topic or by removing the automatically inserted text, and you were well aware of how the notification worked at the time you made the post. Therefore, a reasonable person would be, um, reasonable in judging that you intentionally directed the post to Ben.
As for the "cute little poem," the post contained nothing other than the @ mention and the formatted poem, with no explanation. It is also reasonable to assume the "poem" was directed at Ben. From the context, it is clear that the format was directed at Ben; it is not unreasonable to believe the content was similarly directed, and also reasonable to view the content as "insulting or "fighting words" those that by their very utterance inflict injury ... no essential part of any exposition of ideas, and are of such slight social value as a step to truth that any benefit that may be derived from them is clearly outweighed." You may or may not have intended to insult Ben, but a reasonable person would have foreseen the likelihood that it would be perceived as an insult and avoided it if it was not intended and apologized quickly if the insult was inadvertent.

I'ma call BS on that. At least 99.9% of humans would infer that meaning. Yeah, that's an ass-pull number, but certainly the vast majority of people would have that reaction. Even if your claimed inability to draw inferences that a normal person would draw is genuine, not just part of your shtick, it's not an excuse. If you should ever find yourself on the wrong end of a slander or libel suit over one of your insults, the "reasonable person" standard isn't going to be on your side.

Or, there could be a shiny button in the toolbar saying "Open Table Editor" where you wysiwyg-edit your table, and then it gets inserted into your post as an object as opposed to a string. Or support drag and drop from excel. Or a tiny imp takes notes on a yellow post-it as you dictate what you want in the table and sticks it on your screen at the appropriate place.

I don't think anyone disagrees with that. But if everyone refused to understand the problem, as blakey is committed to doing, how would the problem ever get fixed?
-
@boomzilla said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
if everyone refused to understand the problem, as blakey is committed to doing
I did not read his objections like that. Rather, it seems to me that everyone is trying to tell him that his problem is not what he thinks it is. Blakey wanted to add a table, and somehow his text got thrown around because of it. The answer he's getting is "it's supposed to do that" or "you should have done it in markdown instead".
Adding a table is not supposed to move text around. Not closing a HTML table might, but that's not what Blakey is complaining about; that he is forced to use HTML is a regrettable means to and end.
Come to think of it, the Imp moving a post-it note around is perhaps not a bad idea if I can get it to jellypotato in sync with nodeBB.

@Mikael_Svahnberg said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Yes, of course! He's stubbornly wrong because he likes to argue (is my assumption).

Right. And he thinks NodeBB did something here, which it didn't. We've allowed table markup so that people could post tables, because the supported markdown here doesn't do tables (though it looks like @ben_lubar has worked on hacking something in). That a better solution than writing raw table markup is desirable is not a controversial opinion.
And I would also say that I've never come across a WYSIWYG table interface that I didn't hate. Using pipes is the best solution I've seen.
@Mikael_Svahnberg said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
Adding a table is not supposed to move text around.
The problem is that he never added a table. Just the guts of a table. Like, he built a kitchen table and didn't include legs and now he thinks it's the refrigerator's fault that the table is down on the floor.

Yes, he does. In context, however, that doesn't appear to be the case here. "A retard who hates usable software" Blakeyrat hates unusable software. His post was in the context of ranting against broken software. It is unlikely he would refer to himself as someone who hates usable software. This is a case in which, although I favor judging his words in context, I would argue strongly against assuming he meant to write words other than the ones he actually wrote.

BTW, an apology is meaningless if it doesn't lead to changing the behavior that required the apology, in a way similar to how Catholic priests can refuse to accept a confession, if the confessor demonstrates no remorse or desire to stop sinning.

Then you already have an identified method of working towards a solution: tell Tim Berners-Lee that this is stupid behavior, and try to convince him, the authors of the HTML specifications, and all the browser vendors to do it some other way.

@Mikael_Svahnberg "it" does work. Blakey just fucked up teh codez and made it not work.
"It", in the latter case, meant WYSIWYG editing, which is hard as fuck to do well. And we don't even have a WYSIWYG editor anyway. And even if we did, I suspect I'm not alone in thinking that it'd be easier to just enter raw mode and type the HTML / markdown version of it rather than try to use the WYSIWYG editor. Some things are just easier to do in code.
Producing non-broken code in either the HTML or markdown format should be well within the capacity of anyone on this forum.
