I at least want them to not be stupid.
People have to be smarter than the thing they're making. So for something to actually be smart you need super geniuses to make it. But normal people give it a try and we have broken shit as a result. I'd rather have normal people making stupid software than have normal people making broken 'smart' software.

@bb36e You don't need to be smart to make something better than Markdown, you just need to not be lazy.
Unfortunately, these forums are all made by open source developers who are all lazy as fuck.

a table with some table cells

Nice, but discoverability is rather lacking. And (like everything else Markdown) isn't even close to WYSIWYG.

a retard who hates usable software

@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
It's more a "could we please stop
installing really really shitty broken awful software on this forumusing HTML because that's the problem but I'll blame something else" request. But now that Ben L's in charge, that'll never happen anyway because he's got all the open sores brainworms and he probably actually thinks NodeBB is good.FTFY because brain ticks.

@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
I would also say good computer languages (like C#) generally don't have bits where it's obvious what the coder meant but the compiler returns an error anyway.
Let me show you how to fall through a case statement... Oh wait, you can't. You'll just have to use older-style if -then-elseif-elseif-elseif-fuckyou trees.
-
@Tsaukpaetra You can fall through as long as you don't want "extra" processing for the upper label(s).
-
@mikehurley said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
@Tsaukpaetra You can fall through as long as you don't want "extra" processing for the upper label(s).
That's the whole point of fall through though. That what you described is merely multiple-match (don't know the actual technical term).
-
@Tsaukpaetra There is "goto case". C# just requires you to be explicit about it. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/06tc147t.aspx

Bookmarked!
Now, let's let Blakeyrat get back to complaining about
HTML??? Brain worms? (We need some chemicals to get rid of them real quick... ) problems!
-
@blakeyrat Wow this looks ENTIRELY different on my work computer than on my home computer, WTF.
-
@blakeyrat Well, it looks ENTIRELY different in my computer now from what it looked 30 minutes ago in the same computer, so I guess someone changed the CSS.
-
@ben_lubar posted about fucking with markdown-style tables in the updates thread.

@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
I don't give a shit what it is. I just don't want to see the goddamned bug.
I'm as unforgiving as the next guy about NukeBB bugs (moreso, perhaps). But really-- not sure what's supposed to happen here.
We know it isn't a fault in NodeBB rendering what you typed in. It's the browser.
So what's the action here? Should NoodleBBBB detect the invalid HTML? If so, should it strip it or fix it?
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
then don't read this topic which is exclusively me pointing out bugs.
Actually you're technically incorrect. The topic is about you pointing out PROBLEMS.
Which actually makes you technically more correct, since you're pointing out a problem (invalid HTML handling) and not a bug.
-
@Lorne-Kates The fix is stop using Markdown. We've been through this. Markdown is shitty and awful.
-

Ah. In that case I agree 100%.
-

Okay. So, say we eliminated markdown.
Your complaint about the HTML table coming before the text that you "clearly" placed "after" it would still occur. So... (Here I expect you to read my mind)
-
@blakeyrat yeah, okay. Just let me know when you find a WYSIWYG editor that can handle tables, and handle them well...
-
@anotherusername The table editor in Confluence works reasonably well.
-
@mikehurley I wouldn't even say that MS Word handles them "well", so are we talking better than that?
(I'm talking about the bizarre "I deleted the paragraph before my table and now I can't get the cursor to move above it at all" edge-case sort of bugs, mainly. The ones where the simplest solution is almost just to Ctrl-A, Del, and start over.)
-
@anotherusername Ah. In that case, I'd say Confluence's table editor is on par with the "best".
-
@anotherusername said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
@blakeyrat yeah, okay. Just let me know when you find a WYSIWYG editor that can handle tables, and handle them well...
-
@Lorne-Kates That page took an impressively long time to load for a "featherweight" editor. Also...
Oh yes, what a useful way to represent a newly inserted table with no contents.
-
@anotherusername said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

The one in Google Docs/Drive/whatever they're calling it this week works ok.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
Google Docs/Drive/whatever they're calling it this week
Google Docs is the word processor, and may or may not contain Google Spreadsheets depending on who you ask. Google Drive is the filesystem that Google Docs stores its files in.
-
@ben_lubar Whatever, all I know is they sent me a confusing email I mostly ignored months back that said something about Docs was turning into Drive and something something whatever.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Pics or it didn't happen?

If by "months" you mean "like 3 years probably", then it was an email saying that the file storage portion of Docs was being renamed to Drive and that Docs was now a subset of Drive instead of Docs having a filesystem inside it.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
I just don't want to see the goddamned bug.
Then stop writing buggy HTML. You're as bad as an open source dev.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
The computer misinterpreting it was in defiance of all my expectations. It was being fucking stupid.
TIL @blakeyrat's new to computers.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
I'M TRYING TO TYPE TEXT INTO A FORUM, SPECIFICALLY A TABLE.
No you weren't.
QED.
OMGZORS BLAKEYRAT"S NODEBB BUG MIGRATED TO CHROME!
HOLY SHIT, NOW IT"S IN EDGE! OPEN SORES RUINS EVARYTHING!!!1!!11
I get that you're physically incapable of admitting you are wrong, so it's time for you to do that thing you do where you stop talking about something in lieu of admitting you were wrong.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
You don't need to be smart to make something better than Markdown,
It's kind of entertaining the, the ADD-riddled way you bounce from one thing to another to keep stirring the flamage.
-
@FrostCat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Where have you been for the last six hours?
Oh right, haven't gotten to the end of the thread yet....
-
@Lorne-Kates said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

You don't expect an answer, do you? Actual answers are a to .
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
The fix is stop using Markdown.
There was no markdown in the table HTML you wrote badly.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

I'd like to say "waiting for the thread to ripen to give @blakeyrat an opening for a cheap shot about how I am late to the party, because he never gets tired of stale insults, even if they're so old that he'd chip a tooth if he bit one.

Well, if that's what you'd like to say, what do you actually say? ;)
-
@Tsaukpaetra That he's probably going to either abandon thread or try to spin up a flamefest about something else. I'm wondering if he'll start whining about being depressed again, or call me a stalker (he hasn't done that one in a while) or start the "Here comes everyone calling me stupid again" stuff. He's not likely to come up with a new one because the old reliable stuff keeps working.
Pity in a way, it's kind of lazy.

Yeah, the lack of fresh content has really dragged me down...

@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
It's more a "could we please stop installing really really shitty broken awful software on this forum" request.
You're trying to attribute browser behaviour to the forum. I don't agree with you that it's a bug because your input isn't conformant and GIGO and all that, but whether it's a bug or not, the onus is on you to install a browser that doesn't display this behaviour that you don't like. @ben_lubar didn't install that browser on your computer and it's unfair to blame him for its behaviour.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
the spec has absolutely no relevance to me or this bug
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
I am a fucking human being. What I meant was OBVIOUS.
Says you, but without a spec, what you wrote is a meaningless jumble of angle brackets and odd sequences of letters. You can't take advantage of the meaning of some of your input according to the spec and simultaneously say the spec has no relevance. It is the only thing that's relevant because it's the only thing that tells how to turn your input into a table at all.
-
@another_sam And yet if this software wasn't a pile of flaming dog shit, I wouldn't have to know the HTML spec (or the hidden super mystery Markdown feature) to make a fucking table. Just like I don't have to know in Word, Outlook, Confluence, Google Docs, etc.

All true, and if you'd said that to begin with this thread would probably be at least 100 posts shorter.
-
@another_sam It would also have been 100 posts shorter if I could communicate any idea whatsoever on this forum without dozens of jackals swooping down to call me an idiot, moron, etc.

I bet there isn't one, though.
