So Linda Kates (my email address plus some numbers) just sent me a lovely picture of her potted roses. Since it's sent from her iPhone, and has no subject, I assume she was trying to send it to herself.

because of all the problems with + (and the sites stripping it anyway)...
I found out this week that our own site strips
+
signs. But by accident.Turns out an original coder had a (un)healthy dose of NIH syndrome. So of course of a normal form post, it overrides onsubmit (return false) and manually grabs the data using jQuery (literally things like
data['email'] = $('#email').val()
) and then string concatenation likefor (k in data) { str += '&' + escape(k) + '=' + escape(data[k]); }
and then setting that string in a jQuery ajax call. So we trust jQuery to get the data and post the data, but not to
serialize()
the data? Or, we trust jQuery!?Of course
escape('+')
produces a+
instead of%2B
so any plusses are converted to spaces in the server, which then strips all whitespace from email addresses. I've flagged it but it has been marked as the lowest priority
-
Oh, I've got one better than that even. Escaping? What's escaping?
https://what.thedailywtf.com/t/macgyvers-xmlhttprequest/51514/50
I ended up GreaseMonkeying a script to override that one, so it at least replaces
+
with%2B
. But it still can't just submit the form, because their server-side is looking for the hacked-up input. So my script is stuck hacking up the input just the same. At least it's escaped correctly, now.It also still dumps you back on page 1 of both lists, which is really fucking annoying if you were on page 13 or something. I tried adding page number parameters to the request, but the server side doesn't do anything with them. I think I'll try to update it... I ought to be able to get it to load the "move stuff" requests in a hidden iframe, split the request into multiple requests if the URL string gets too long (because GET-encoding is obviously the way to do that... but I can't change their stupid design there), and then at the very end of all that just have it load the correct page.

Sounds like you're implementing a new interface atop a broken one. I'm sure that is more fun than using the broken interface
-
Yes, pretty much...
I got it working. It's... beautiful. It properly escapes names with
+
, it fires off a whole series of synchronous AJAX requests if need be so none of them individually has a GET string that's too long, and then finallywindow.location
is changed to reload the current page in both lists instead of jumping back to page 1 in both of them.Basically, from a user's perspective, it works the way it should've worked; underneath the hood it's still doing it the wrong way because it has to interface with that stupid back-end.
edit: it's worth mentioning that I am literally the only person in my entire organization who ever has to use this interface.

synchronous AJAX
Synchronous Asynchronous JavaScript And XML?
Why do people still call it AJAX anyway? No-one uses XML with AJAX anymore; it's all JSON nowadays.
Then again, AJAX does sound better than AJAJ...
-
Synchronous
XMLHttpRequest
, then, I guess. Though it wasn't XML either...var req = new XMLHttpRequest; req.open("GET", url + params, false); // false makes the request synchronous req.send(); // don't need the response at all

to meHi Lily,
My name is Barb Slumsky, and I am the librarian for the Jamestown Area Community Orchestra. I tried last fall to collect the folder of music you had been given, but could get no response from you. Do you still have it, and can I pick it up from you?
Please let me know ASAP. Thanks.
[/quote]I guess I'm a bit more sympathetic to a little old lady who runs a community orchestra. But still maybe-- JUST MAYBE-- you never got a response because you can't type in a fucking email address?
Should Lorne:
[poll]- Ignore the email
- Respond politely with "wrong address"
- Tear this ancient biznitch a new yahoo-hole?
- Promise to send her the sheet music, and mail her this: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/never-gonna-give-you-up-digital-sheet-music/19431497

@Lorne-Kates Goddamn you I have no fucking clue about what fucking markup we're using. Fuck all of you.

i'll pass, but i thank you for the offer.

@Lorne-Kates the NodeBB polls plugin only supports one poll per topic and it has to be in the OP and also there were other problems related to pages not loading.

Please, oh please, do the rick-roll sheet music. That would probably be the first, and only, original rick-roll, EVAR! <3

I miss badges, myself.
I vote for the rickroll, myself.
In other "dumbasses trying to use my email" news, the bimbo who thinks she owns my address just registered a tumblr--or so I thought. It was actually a phishing attempt, which I found a little disappointing, because I was going to disable it for her the way I locked her out of Instagram.

I swear to Zeus, I have had to do this as well. It is amazing the number of people who think they own my e-mail address. I have canceled hotel rooms, unreserved cars, and canceled numerous accounts. I STILL get mail for that person o_O

Also, you know, XML :D

I'm waiting for her phone number to show up in an order and I swear I'll call her ass.
She already signed me up for a mailing list like three years ago and I replied to it, telling the others she was using my address, but either they didn't tell her or she didn't listen.

Maybe she's just harassing you, hoping you'll stop using her e-mail address and give it back?
-
I just got her DIRECTV order. What the shit, people pay $164 a month for TV? :/
Also, AT&T sent me her "secret access PIN". I wonder if it's the same number as her bank PIN. =)

I tried that. Turned it off due to all the shit that came in. I just set up a couple aliases for the more "normal" addresses (contact/help/etc)

Now DIRECTV (direct vee?) wants me to confirm that I agree with their privacy policy.
I want to reply with "Does this policy allow you to send Laura's information to unsolicited third parties?"
Also, Gmail says this at the top of the 500 page message:
Um, actually, Gmail, this content is typically used to GIVE AWAY personal information.

Wow looks like I'll be getting that ASU scholarship! Honored to have been selected for the "New American University Plus Scholarship". Looks like I'll attend Arizona State University later this year. I wonder what this will do to my Brockport Alumni status.
Before that I have a Toyota check-up in Melbourne which I consider skipping to accept instead the personal invitation to Life's Women's Retreat. If only I could remember the password to my new Instagram account I registered last week. Maybe I should reset the password.

Did it include "your" student number? Because "your" student number is what you use to log into most college CMS. I bet "you" could change you course schedule, "your" major, and sign up for fun clubs like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance, and the Aryan Brotherhood.
Sometimes you can even use "your" student number to access internal email and send messages to "your" professors.

I created a new Gmail last week for testing something. Already there's a Twitter signup with it.

Well I keep getting texts from a supermarket delivery service informing me that my order is on its way and that I've changed gotten married and changed my surname (presumably I married a Mr Alexander).
Naturally they don't have any contact details for the real Mrs Alexander, do you think there'd be any point replying to the automated system?

To be fair, it's equally possible—though not necessarily equally likely—that she's correctly typing in the email address that Lily gave her (this may be the first time she's tried to contact Lily by email). For this reason I'd go with the polite option.

What were you testing? Were you testing the security of a random Wordpress site by giving it your gmail address? because I think you have your answer.

I've always given it a 50/50 tossup between the two possibilities. It's why I tend not to be harsh until prompted otherwise.

Yes... try replying "stop". If that fails, you could always try other means of contact.
-
@PleegWat I am convinced she doesn't actually know it's not her address.
-
@FrostCat In her mind, of course it's her address. She always used frostcat@hotmail.com. Now along with everyone she moved to gmail, so obviously frostcat@gmail.com is hers.
