What's so bad about discourse?
-
That's the same graphic as , only how it would appear if I hadn't hacked the site CSS to stop it in posts:
But, but how can that be an emoji?! It's not square!!

But, but how can that be an emoji?! It's not square!!
i was using emoji before they were cool.
back then we called them "Emotes" or "emoticons" and there were tons of them that were rectangular instead of square!
-
Say, has anybody seen this Jeff blog post? Seems kinda relevant. Like
So when people ask me what our biggest mistake was in building Stack Overflow I'm glad I don't have to fudge around with platitudes. I can honestly and openly point to a huge, honking, ridiculously dumb mistake I made from the very first day of development on Stack Overflow β and, worse, a mistake I stubbornly clung to for a solid nine month period after that over the continued protestations of the community. I even went so far as to write a whole blog post decrying its very existence.

Clearly you were Doing It Wrong

I was using emoticons before they were graphical. =)
I even once wrote one of those articles that was in ever newspaper in the mid 1990s. "Did you know that in the Online Information Super Highway, people use symbols to give emotional context to a sentence. They write an equal sign, then a bracket, because if you look at it sideways, it looks like a smiley face. These smileys, or 'emoticons' as they're calling in World Wide Web Lingo, come in many different forms".
Followed by a list of the usual suspects--
=) happy
=( sad
=| (emotionless)
=P (sticking out tongue)and then some "silly" ones like @@@=) Marge Simpson.

has anybody seen this Jeff blog post?
Like a bunch of his other writing, it sounds pretty sensible on the surface. Too bad he forgot all that (especially the polite part) for Discourse.

It's kinda ironic. He recognizes that he made the same kind of mistake on SO, was a dick to the users about it for a while, eventually gave in and realized they were right, and now acknowledges it, and even wrote a blog post describing why not to do that. Then turns around and does the same thing again on the next project.
-
?
-
Let's start using it this way:
:)
-
was a dick to the users about it for
a whilelong enough to drive away swaths of power users and community leaders, permanently damaging relationship with the community and experts and causing irreversible damage to SO's brand and reputation.Or am I thinking of one of the many your Jeff projects he's fucked up in the exact same way?
-
-
That doesn't happen for me (ever, AFAICR),
Really? I've had entire weeks where images would just never upload no matter what. And since the "post" button isn't greyed out, you can easily miss that detail and post a [image uploading...] link instead of the image you intended to.
-
Emotes are not the same thing as emoji.
For one thing, there's no frown in emoji. (Apparently?)

Nothing exact.
I have a mouth and I must frown!
-
Really?
It might have happened once or twice, maybe, but I don't recall it. It's certainly not common for me.
OTOH, IIRC the OP said he'd never experienced random scrolling, but I experience it 100 times a day. Different browsers, versions, OS, network latencies; different race conditions and different bugs observed, I guess.
-
I'm pretty sure he is either lying about never seeing Discourse misbehave, or is the least observant person in history.

ah... the good old days.....
they just don't make quality emoticons these days...
:nostalgia:
see?!

I propose for :nostalgia:
Or maybe it should be :get_off_my_lawn:...

I was thinking about a possible Helen Keller joke, when I realized how disruptive the random scrolling would be to someone using a screen reader or other such accessibility mechanism. The reader would hesitate mid-sentence, then resume with some completely different sentence, I guess. The forum would be completely unusable, ISTM. We at least have the visual cues of the scrollbar jumping around and the loading spinner telling us what's going on, but the screen reader would probably do a terrible job of informing the user. Given how bad CDCK is at GUI design, I'm sure they're even worse (probably much worse) at alternative media presentation.
-
Given CDCK's disdain for the EU's cookie laws you think any of them gives two shits about ADA?
-
Except the EU's cookie laws are stupid as shit.
The ADA makes sense.

I will put $4.37 in a paypal for someone to buy a screenreader and film it trying to parse a Discourse thread.
-
- Be honest about what you won't do.
It always depressed me to see bug trackers and feedback forums with thousands of items languishing there in no man's land with no status at all. That's a sign of a neglected community, and worse, a dishonest relationship with the community.
Better to just shove them under the carpet.
-
For one thing, there's no frown in emoji. (Apparently?)
Emoji One, the set which uses, nowadays has an emojus for frown:
-
We need a new site setting, dont_squash_nonconformist_"emoji", that's set to no by default. And then to spend 6 months bikeshedding the name of the setting.
-
I propose for :nostalgia:
Or maybe it should be :get_off_my_lawn:...
That's some quality selfbikeshedding right there.
-
Wow, those are nice.
Great job, @kevinranks

Trying to do something like "dimension the browser scroll-bar to the total number of posts" would seem like fragile over-engineering to me.
Ran tests. Was a few (literally 1-3) pixels off per post. Damned close, but no cigar. Boo.
Yeah, you could post the browser's screen dimensions (incl, resolution, fonts and sizes), pre-render all the posts on the server in that resolution, then get an accurate idea of how big the "virtual" screen was. That would give you an accurate browser scroll-bar dimension.
No. Make it responsive using fixed steps. Render once per screen size per post edit. Save sizes as metadata. Zooming would require some client-side trickery but doable.
But damn, you guys are complaining about performance already.
The damned thing already "bakes" shit anyway. Posting itself is not a problem from what we saw, most of the time anyway. It's retrieving old data.
That onebox doesn't work
Look, I'm trying, THERE ARE NO DOCS!
There. That's what I have. And guess what? IT WORKS AS INTENDED ON IFRAMELY!

And I can't use a good chunk of those here without them being emojified and fucked up. Seriously, how the FUCK is :) =

A year ago, things were a lot worse. You'd pageup or pagedown and the Infinite Scrollingβ’ couldn't push posts fast enough to keep up with your scrolling.
Still the case here. See also JellypotatoAt the time, a lot of people here were convinced that infinite scrolling was a shitty antipattern to begin with, and I'm not sure how much this has changed.
It has not changed.
