More seriously though, they are afraid of not being allowed in the temple when their children/friends/siblings want to marry and all but them are worthy of entering it. It is a system that not only separates Mormons from non-Mormons, but also filters you according to your level of dedication to the church.
It is also fairly common to check on and talk about your neighbors, it makes sense historically as a defense mechanism taken by a minority to preserve their identity.

Sheesh, I've never experienced that. As far as I was aware, a moderately large contingent of people around me took some of the..."lesser" parts of the Word of Wisdom with a pinch of salt, and ultimately I don't think it had a big impact on their templeworthiness.
I think some people could definitely take it to an extreme, but most I met weren't that fanatical about it. Or any facet of the church, for that matter...

It depends where you are born and raised. Mormons in general are nice people (too nice actually), minorities are always nice because that is a surviving mechanism. Not having templeworthiness is not that harsh a punishment, I have an ex-Mormon friend that was ex-communicated by his brother and father but not his mom. It is complicated and people choose their God, each person has a different God.

Do you mean disowned? Excommunication is usually done by the church to "forcibly" remove a member...I've never heard of it being used in a familial context.

I did not ask if he was disowned and did not read about it either, I do not know. I only knew about it in the familial context. Families not talking to you and such. From what I gathered, the worst one is being ignored by your mom and not invited for family gatherings and thanksgiving dinners.

Their problem is that they've got way too many staff. The best thing they could do would be to lay some of them off. Like, a lot of them. I don't know which ones, but I'd start by looking at the most expensive staff members; since they're not doing much in the way of maintaining the content of the encyclopædia, they really don't need to have that many. Once they've got the staff-spend down (and maybe also moved to a cheaper location) they can quite quickly build up all the reserves they need to be able to operate for a long time.
The purpose of Wikipedia (the organisation, not the site) is not to employ developers.
