"So how did you become a DBA?"
"Well, I was here when the last guy quit and..."
The bad news is that it becomes a dead end job, because people assume, "Oh, s/he uses that 80's see-quell language and could never possibly understand what object-oriented programming, Agile, or *.js are." The good news is that those people don't tend to know how to write performant queries, so if you play your cards right, it can be upwards of a $200k/year job.

And then they're gonna replace her with ActiveRecord. And then you get Discourse's level of DB fuckery.

Well, I'm sure there's a lot of kickbacks and other shit, as in anything that is remotely linked to politics.
That's what Greek said
What I'm saying is just: for little countries like mine it's very beneficial to be in EU (economically) and NATO (I'm not entirely certain*, but hopefully they will come to our aid if shit hits the fan).
-
I never bothered to learn the details of the shit happening in Greece, but are you saying they wouldn't have gotten to where they are now if they were going their own way?

Definitely different. Not definitely better—that's impossible to say in such a what-if-not scenario that's always highly speculative. But things like the endless credit when everybody could already see chances of Greece ever paying up were very slim would definitely not happened like this. Neither would they have been likely to be dragged down as easily by the economic crisis in the Eurozone, even though with their dominant industries like shipping and tourism they would have been hit hard either way.

If I run around a Lojban Mein Kampf copy I'll assume it was written by you. Are you the creator of lojban or something like that?

Are you trying to piss him off?

Having just read the last 300 or so posts in here, I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Here's a story:

Are you trying to piss him off?
I just realized I mixed up @Lorne_Kates with @ben_lubar. I'll assume anyone talking about lojban to be @ben_lubar.

I am. I get royalties every time someone uses Lojban. That's why I tolerate @ben_lubar 's spamming of it all over the forum.

why do they have only height and sex printed on the ID - why not other distinguishing features, like eye colour, hair colour, race, etc. Why is height so important?
ISTM that height would be rather difficult to fake, which makes it a good feature for identification.
Hair colouring shampoo, coloured contact lenses, ... I wouldn't want to have to get a new ID card every time I change my hair colour (which used to be multiple times per year when I was younger).
Race is a difficult one to do correctly. People have told me they think I have Spanish, Italian, native American, Turkish, Norwegian and Egypt heritage, just based on my skin complexion and facial features. I'm none of those as far as I know (and that's about 4 centuries, thanks to both my grandfathers tracing back the family tree with their respective ancestors).
Also, what categories would you use for race?
-

That's a good point. I guess I was thinking in terms of stuff you usually see on 'Police is looking for' posters, but if we are considering the most difficult to change features height is probably right behind fingerprints and retinas.
what categories would you use for race?
Hex code of the skin colour, obviously.

My mental image of you now:

Funny but no. I never had snakebites and I'm not into nail polish.

Hence the which you even quoted.
But seriously, just for the sake of that stupid joke, I wanted to check what mine would be so I found a photo of me and went over it with a Digital Colour Meter.
To my surprise, there isn't any kind of uniformity in the skin colour on the face. Even discounting the obvious like eyes, mouth, beard and the shadows, it's still very fucking different. In my case the forehead seems to be the most constant.
