What? It's a nice word, no?
Perfectly cromulent!

Discourse let's me see what I'm typing when I send a PM.
Hey Sam, not all of us hate Discourse, my vote was to not migrate. And we still have outages on NodeBB.
-
As a bit of a contrast, here's something I'm (mostly) happy with that CDCK has done recently:
Example:
-
NodeBB's method:
"Hey, there are some bugs in your software that I don't pay for."
"Ok, we'll fix those because they also affect people who pay us because they use the same software."
Resolved: FIXED
Discourse's method:
"Hey, there are some bugs in your software that I don't pay for."
"THIS PROBLEM CANNOT POSSIBLY EXIST BECAUSE IT WAS NOT FIRST DISCOVERED BY ONE OF OUR hundreds OF PAYING CUSTOMERS"
Resolved: BANNED, no longer welcome here, IMAGE MACRO, WEBCOMIC
Community Server's method:
"Hey, there are some bugs in your software that I don't pay for."
"Wait, why can't I find the product I'm using on your website?"
Resolved: no bugtracker so technically there's no unresolved bug report

"make Jeff look bad"
Discourse does that well enough on it's own.
So does Jeff.

@FrostCat said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
@boomzilla My account's still not suspended, either. I just checked.
You could always copy and paste my post and reply to the Poll thread.
Actually, I wonder what would happen if someone did that, but removed the @ mentions... =)
-
@AlexMedia Dafuq? Your posts was as nice and on-topic as a post can possibly be.
Today, Jeff has managed to make me hate him even more.
-
@boomzilla Okay, seems like they're going crazy. "No, we don't have any problems, we're just being persecuted by haters!!!!"

Please point the OP to this thread.

The reaction was purely based on association.

I could, but I'm not trying to get banned.

This wasn't Jeff's doing, it was his minion Sam's.
-
@AlexMedia said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
it was his minion Sam's.
Sam used to be nice and, if not quite competent (would anyone truly competent be a core Discodev?), significantly less incompetent than Jeff. Sadly, Jeff has corrupted him, and neither of those are still true.
-
@FrostCat said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
I'm not trying to get banned.
I've never created an account over there, but at this point, if I were to do so, the only reason would be to politely point out flaws in the product, development process and/or management policies. So yeah, I'd get banned.
-
@AlexMedia said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

He's just following orders.
-
@boomzilla said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
He's just following orders.
No, it's not just following orders. From the conversations that I've had with Sam so far, I think he has spent too much time in the vicinity of Jeff and that he is copying some of Jeff's character traits.
-
@AlexMedia Yes, though I would have said that he's able to finish Jeff's sentences and knows what he wants done without having to say so. The original decision to ban us and even spend money to help us migrate was Jeff's. This was just more of the same.
-
Really? Jeff forked out some cash to get us off of Discourse?
-
@AlexMedia said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
Jeff forked out some cash to get us off of Discourse?
IIRC, he offered to, but Alex turned him down. (I'd say, "Somebody please correct me if my memory is bad," but in this group I know I'll be corrected without having to ask.)
-
@AlexMedia He offered. I'm sure it must have been discussed up thread. Yes, that offer was transmitted in @sam's "I'm out" email to @apapadimoulis and @PJH.
-
@asdf said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
@AlexMedia His next reply is even worse, he went on a long and - of course - extremely unprofessional rant:
Yeah, that's how you govern a community and encourage contributors, Jeff.
Holly shit! Is this some CEO or something? He should have been chosen as Trump's vice president. He is totally mean, and apparently quite likes the phrase "No longer welcome here".
-
@HardwareGeek said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
So yeah, I'd get banned.
I just had an Evil Idea (INB4: ). I'm not advocating actually doing this, but it might be rather embarrassing to CDCK if it were to happen:
IIRC, the Discourse admin page fairly prominently shows the IP address from which you registered, right? So if they were to IP ban somebody, that's probably the address they'd most likely ban.
Many companies have wide-open WiFi access for business visitors (or employee personal devices), blocked from their internal networks but with access to the external Internet. And WiFi can often be accessed from a short distance outside a building.
Park outside buildings belonging to some of CDCK's high-profile paying customers. Register several accounts. Later, post enough inflammatory (but true!) remarks to get not only banned, but IP banned.
They're pretty quick to swing the ban hammer; do you think they'd check who the IP belongs to before banning it? They could wind up banning their own biggest paying customers.
Of course, this is obviously malicious, and the company whose WiFi you used stands a good chance of causing you significant legal trouble if they managed to track you down, so it's also a Really Bad Idea (Edit: and, as Blakey pointed out, rather childish;
heaven@blakeyrat forbid anybody here should like childish humor), but the egg on CDCK's faces would be funny.
-
It's simple: Jeff doesn't seem to understand the concept of failure, he is convinced that everything he touches turns into gold (maybe because SO/SX worked uot so well), he is of the opinion that he knows better than the 'plebs' that use his product and he can't deal with criticism whatsoever.
As he has surrounded himself with people who only say what he wants to hear, he doesn't get any feedback that his behaviour is unacceptable. So, he sees himself justified in his actions and continues on that course.
Jeff's behaviour on TDWTF as well as on meta.fail convinces me that he has a passive-aggressive personality disorder.

NodeBB's method:

"Ok, we'll fix those because they also affect people who pay us because they use the same software."
Resolved: FIXEDYeah about that...
The "rate of fixing" is going to need to be about 40 times faster if they want to have a quality forum before we all die of old age.
Even simple one-liner bugs like "the drop area for dragged-and-dropped images doesn't cover the entire text input area" are still unfixed after, what, a year? Almost a year? That's clown college quality.
-
@HardwareGeek What are you, 8? Grow up.
"Har har har this guy Jeff is acting like an immature dick so I'm going to come up with ah immature dick way to get revenge! Because that obviously is the best reaction!"
-
At least issues with NodeBB get fixed from time to time. That's miles and miles better than getting yelled at because you're "doing it wrong", because you're not "supposed to have a discussion like that", or simply because Jeff has "never heard of the issue before".
I would contribute to NodeBB if I knew a thing or two about how Node/NodeBB development works. I would never even consider contributing code to Dischorse anymore.

I'm pretty sure that one hasn't been reported officially. Lemme check.
Fake edit:
-
@ben_lubar Whatever. The ones I do report you don't fix anyway. So I'm not exactly highly motivated to go through every single thing on my bugs thread and dig out my GitHub login.
-
@blakeyrat said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

They have a pretty good track record of going through the bug reports pretty quickly (something like half an hour response time on a weekday).
It's just that sometimes I forget to report bugs on their tracker and that means they don't see them.
-
@blakeyrat I agree, Noders just pretend they'll fix, and Jeff tell us straight out to fuck ourselves, and I prefer that. Youtube is still cropped on mobile.
I like that Jeff is opinionated, and that makes better products than a commite trying to get everyone happy (reference: C++).
And banning TDWTF makes sense, we have no business there, wtf are people posting there if they dont use Discourse anymore.
In a good enough server, I would rather install Discourse than NodeBB.

Right; and you've been "forgetting" to post the "when you make the window narrow on desktop, the site goes into mobile mode bug" consistently for months now. HOW FORGETFUL! THAT IS A PLAUSIBLE EXPLANATION!
-
@blakeyrat They have that one. It's status is:
Wontfix: too much work

Didn't @boomzilla fix that one for you with a plugin you refuse to believe exists?

Both products are shit. Both products are headed by developers who have absolutely no clue about usability or any QA ability. That doesn't make Jeff some kind of misunderstood genius.
It's really just a condemnation of the entire IT industry where these are the best developers we can get in 2016.

That's not completely true. Sometimes Jeff will be doing his usual thing in a thread, then Sam will come along and fix or make a change along the lines of what the OP was talking about without Jeff ever changing stride. These seem to get ignored.
We've always supported 3 shades of blue.

I think you know exactly how I'm going to respond to this, Ben L.
Just fucking admit it: you only promote bugs you agree with. Stop fucking lying to yourself and others. That's why people aren't reporting bugs to you, because you're doing a really shitty job of managing the bug tracker. Mystery solved.

It is easy!! just do not die of old age I make sure to eat unhealthy, and sit behind computer too much :) heart-failure will do it. Trolling on the forums, and being constantly irritated at random forum software and shit will help too , so do not worry.

The CSS to get that working is beyond me. If someone can figure it out, let me know. Or better yet, submit a PR so I don't have to do the work myself.

Not really CEO, or not really Trump VP?
If you meant the latter. The real question is if he is white. It does matter what he said in the past as long as he is associated with Trump!
Dear Trump himself flip flops on everything all the time.

Mine too, but I've nothing to say to them other than calling them incompetent fuckweasels for failing to pay attention to what their more technical users uncover, and I don't habitually log into sites just to do call the proprietor of the site a bad name. (Also, IIJM or does meta.failcourse seem slow by comparison with this thread? Still not fixed their ridiculous streaming and JS weight problems…)
