:wtf: How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread)

Didn't they fire their QA department recently?
Dunno why the tropicalfish, that's exactly what they did.
Seriously.
-
Well, yes. But His Holiness would claim that Discourse is above QA, and we were always just a bunch of bridge trolls anyway.
And I want to keep my emoji per post count up, so that I don't get Discoshadowbanned from the Lounge if the TL3 requirements expand to include emojis used.

He would be wrong; there are cave trolls here, too.

whispers are still marked as experimental in settings
Which happened only after they (and we) discovered a metric fuckton of information disclosure bugs in the whispers feature. After it went to clients.

But it was in the test-passed branch? It passed testing so why is it broken?

For certain values of "passed".

Yeeeeeah. Didn't they fire their QA department recently?
I'm not sure "fire" is the right word.
Although fire sure is handy for burning those bridges...

Remember the two buttons which started this? Well...
I just want to get rid of having 2 buttons, instead just have the word "Dismiss"
And then open a modal
[ ] Stop tracking these topics Dismiss topics
I think it is a far clearer approach and a lot less error prone.
To which the solution is:
@techAPJ said:Just made it like so:
Because obviously replacing two buttons with one button which gives you the same two buttons to press is progress.

That entire discussion ignores the fact that nobody knows what "dismiss topics" even means. Not until they click it accidentally a half-dozen times and work it out through trial and error.

Well that too.
Jeff suggested they at least update the tooltips, before the above change appeared which has no tooltips and text that isn't much clearer than how it started.Jeff's original suggestion was this, from @cpradio.
Dismiss Posts does not alter your tracking of said topic, it simply removes those posts/topics from the Unread tab temporarily.
Dismiss Topics will remove your tracking of those topics, so they will effectively never appear in the unread tab again.
-
I guess "mark as read" and "stop tracking topic" would be too obvious.
-
Dismiss Posts does not alter your tracking of said topic, it simply removes those posts/topics from the Unread tab temporarily.
That's even more confusing. And not even accurate, since the Unread tab isn't the only place the unread markers appear.
Dismiss Topics will remove your tracking of those topics, so they will effectively never appear in the unread tab again.
That one's bordering on gibberish. "Remove your tracking of those topics?" Huh? I've seen Japanese VCR manuals that made more sense.
In fact, I think reading, "remove your tracking of those topics" I'd assume I'd have MORE unread posts, because the button removed the tracking that showed them as read.
-
I guess "mark as read" and "stop tracking topic" would be too obvious.
Much too obvious. That provides information, and users get confused with information
-
Atwood's original reason for not using "tracking" in the button name is, and I quote:
It is not even correct to say stop tracking. What if I was Watching one of the topics in the unread list? Then per your proposal the button should say "Stop Tracking and Stop Watching", or really " Change These Topics to Regular Notification State"
Because one of the "tracking" states is called tracking, and he would be confused if that was the case.

"tracking" states
Then change the terminology to "follow" (compare: social networks) or "subscribe" (compare: classic for(a/ums))?
-
Then change the terminology
You have to convince them, not me.
or "subscribe" (compare: classic for(a/ums))
Bet this one wouldn't go over too well with Atwood given the example.

Jeff's original suggestion was this, from @cpradio.
And to make matters worse, it doesn't even actually utilize Sam's suggestion/mockup that Jeff approved of...
I've added my 2 cents to the discussion which is now definitely in bike shedding zone.

So "Less is More", literally means less is more in Discoland. Brillant.

Hold onto your hats, boys, girls, critters, or what have you... the bikeshed is now open for business!

- Change right gutter to show larger progress bar, and other relevant UI elements - Move right gutter in/out links below posts - Replace "Dismiss Posts" and "Dismiss Topics" with "Dismiss" and a pop-up explanation / selector
Though there do seem to be a few sane
bugfixesbehavior changes on the roadmap too. But it looks like their 4 month release cadence is going to take it in the nuts (then again, there are holidays in thissprinttortoise walk).

They never leave the bike shed.
They managed to build an entire garage held together with layer upon layer of dried paint, broken lumber and complicator screws (aka: nails that have a spiral hand-etched into them). It sprawls across the lawn. None of the walls are at right angles-- though every corner has a sticky note with "TODO: level this" (because they think a level can be used to make a right angle). It's dark, because they forgot to put in windows, because this was a bike shed and not a garage, so there's battery-operated flashlights duct-taped to the ceiling. (They never ran electricity of course). Someone is assigned the duty of manually checking the flashlights once every three days, to replace the batteries.
It's a serviceable garage, if you squint right and never slam the front door. And it's so huge that it can be used as a workshop. They'll use this inner platform to build a bike shed...

Oh good, more functionality hidden behind additional mouse clicks.

It can. Hammer makes a pretty good screwdriver at a push, too.The pissforce team would rather use a particle accelerator to square the corners, though.

They've also got a rabid wolverine hiding in the corner. Because all bikesheds have rabid wolverines for the next 10 years!

What are the odds that the button won't have an ellipsis or and other indicator that it will give the user a popup, thus scaring users into being too afraid to click that for fear of the wrong thing happening?
-

Just when I couldn't assume anything worse about the Dipflow team, you show me a whole new level of disappointment I can look forward to.
-
The real question is whether they'll re-shed it before the "stable" 1.5 release.
-
Developer standup, 3 days to go:
Atwood: Guys, I'm still not quite sure about the Dismiss button. I think we really need to abstract it from the users further. So I'm going to push a change to all our clients in about ten minutes that will remove all Dismiss buttons and automatically clear all user notifications every 42 minutes to make sure performance doesn't take a hit.
Everyone else: Sounds good. Good meeting.
Atwood: Ok then, we should be good to go to release 1.5 3 days early. Take that, WTDWTF! You all figured we couldn't meet our release schedule!

How are you still accessing Meta? (just posted these complaints due to your insight ;) )
-
Why the fuck are you still trying to help these fucknuggets?
-
Because I'm stuck on their software... (at Sitepoint)

If your employers insist on using this shit, resign.

I'm not paid... lol, this is only going to get worse for me from you guys now isn't it...
-
Guys! We found a hippy!

I'm not paid.
So what's your tie to the setup? Intern? You're listing yourself as staff for them on me[n]ta[l].d, and you're spending time writing stuff for Discourse for them.I've had a couple of jobs where I wasn't paid. Work on promises of being paid maybe next month, maybe you'll have a job if we get this out of the door on time, we have venture capital just around the corner, that sort of thing. Guess what? It's always lies. Walk away. That's free advice, but it's worth more than you paid for it.
-
My $2 is on... @mpalmer's little adjustments to make things nice and purty with Roboto leaked over and are effecting the centering of the old
betterfont. Because, you know, testingcoding to make sure that wasn't going to happen is obviously not important.
-

I was a Team Leader, now I'm an Advisor (SPs term for Moderators). So more so invested in that community, than anything, so fixing/contributing to Discourse saves me headaches.
-
What do you get out of it?
What even is "site point?" It points at sites, I guess?
-
Whoa, whoa, whoa... hold your horses. Did you just OPENLY suggest a change that would affect mobile (as well as desktop) to meta.d? Do you WANT to get banned?
Filed Under: Wait, so people here are asking you if you get paid to be a moderator on a forum? Do our moderators even get paid?
