The headline lied to me!
Also @SUMIREKO your avatar is wonderfully adorable!

If netflix started showing ads I would probably cancel immediately too. If amazon prime wasn't so pervasive in my life I probably would of canceled it the first time I saw ads. on hardware I bought and also demands a subscription to do anything useful with it. I also dumped nowtv because of this.
-
@DogsB This. Either charge me a monthly fee, or show ads, but not both.

How about neither? I just use SALTS on Kodi (got them both on my phone and an android box plugged into the TV.)
-
@HardwareGeek Are you suggesting that chips designed on Linux as opposed to Windows work better? If not, how does your post imply Linux is better for word processing/web browsing?

He actually rickrolled the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade a few years ago.

If netflix started showing ads
I just got an email from them yesterday where they patted themselves on the back for not raising my rates as a pre-existing subscriber, when they raised everyone else's rates two years ago, but that my time is up, and next month I have to pay $1/mo more.
-
@PJH I don't mind paying for a good stream provider, I just only want to be billed once.
-
Unfortunately, I doubt many of them would actually follow through. How many cable subscribers actually canceled when the cable stations started airing ads?
-
@anotherusername I would have, but that was before my time. Now I have no choice: if a channel isn't in a streaming provider and I want it, I have to be double-billed.

In other words, that's basically the same exact logic that caused a bunch of people, who were pissed off when the ads started, to not all actually cancel their subscriptions.
-
@anotherusername I guess. The difference is, I feel like if one provider tries it and loses a bunch of subscriptions, the other providers won't try it. Whereas the cable status quo is now firmly entrenched.

I don't mind paying $1/month more. But if they start showing ads, I'll cancel my subscription.
I don't have cable because fuckin ads.
I have a digital antenna, I don't mind the ads that much since I don't pay for the signal.

how does your post imply Linux is better for word processing/web browsing?
It doesn't. It is in response to a post implying that word processing and browsing are the only (desktop?) applications for which Linux is suitable. It provides an example of another useful - if highly specialized - application.

@boomzilla That kid's life is over. There's no recovering from that. Not socially, at least.

Isn't that the story behind one of the Five Nights at Freddy's games?

Masturbation is a most deadly sin and children need to be protected from the temptation
?
Oh, it was posted 2014/08/17. Yeah, that's not news "today", is it?

@Zecc I just hit the 'back' button on my browser and I got to read the article. very effective protection scheme.

The most effective solution would probably be to extract their brains and put them in boxes attached to a virtual world. That should get rid of the biological drive to do so, as well as the physical ability to do so.

@Magus If you were digitalized, so you don't need to eat or do anything to survive, and you managed to hack the digital equivalent to the pleasure center on your brain, you would stop doing or even thinking about anything, and that would be the most addictive thing ever.
Oh, I never thought of that. Maybe it was a dumb idea after all. If only I was able to know such things. Thank you for showing me the truth.
Also, I quoted this so your subsequent deletion of your statement of the obvious and missing the joke will in fact not hide it.

Holy shit that's fucking awesome.

I'll just make the same lame joke about wanting to see how to explain that to your insurance company again if that's ok with you.
-
@Luhmann Ah, finally caught up to your original comment. Most insurance doesn't cover flooding. Those guys better hope the company will accept a fire claim.

Wheee ... Go USA!
With the stipulation that there was wind involved first.
When our roof blew off during a storm we skimmed by on the policy that way. If we said just water damage due to rain: Not covered. But since Wind: Covered.
Insurance is stupid like that.

News Channel 4 wanted to talk to the customer, but could not make out the name signed on the receipt.
Funny that...

Insurance companies in the UK are now subsidised for flood cover. If the risk is below a certain level they cover it as normal, higher risk stuff basically gets passed on to a national quasi insurer that all UK insurers pay in to, and claims come out of that pot.
It's weird but the alternative is huge parts of the country being uninsurable
-
@TimeBandit why so judgemental? He might've been trying to help her commit tax fraud by tipping her in cash instead of with the credit card.

Yeah, consumers always end up paying for any extra enforced cost. See men not being allowed to be charged more than women for car insurance so womens' insurance rises to match men's
-
@anotherusername Well, I know many people who write sentences sloping left with one type of 'a' but sign their signature sloping right with a different 'a'.
-

Flood insurance in the US is done by the government. Because the places where it's likely to happen (e.g., Florida) are totally uninsurable.
