But if I, theoretically, wanted to buy some Adobe stuff for €500 or purchase a subscription for some service, I sure as heck don't intend to spend 30% more just so that Apple can get richer.
How do they (=Apple) deal with the the whole "cloud app" (=our app is a glorified webpage) idea? Or can a company like Adobe have a subscription for their products and still provide native apps, except you need to login with your Adobe ID whatever thing?
It's a bit tangential, but I've wondered occasionally.
I bet the app is free to use and handles no payments, but is useless without an existing subscription. Which can be a corporate subscription so there's a real chance users won't be paying anything directly themselves. It's the kind model that Apple would want to stop as it cuts a lot of money out of their loop, but can't if they want to keep Adobe's apps there (which they do).

@PleegWat and yet my iPad has a SIM and a phone number.
Also there's a Windows and a macOS app, and Whatsapp Web.
Those are pretty recent though, and they're still linked to a phone number.
I didn't know about ipads with sim slots.
iPads with cellular (3G or better) have been a thing since a few weeks after the very first model came out in 2010.
But I was doing those shenanigans no later than 2014 based on the circumstances for which I needed WhatsApp, and I certainly had a 3G capable iPad with data plan.

Clearly they dropped the numbering on AssCreed games
Not saying you're late on this news, but if they made an Assassin's Creed game about the distant historical era when they dropped the numbering system on the games they would have to put a disclaimer about how it was made by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs.
-
@hungrier pretty sure the first game has the proto-version of that disclaimer.

Oh, they sure can.
They can just not approve any apps that work that way, because that violates the App Store policy. Then just give Adobe special treatment.

Some more fun stuff: Third-party stores will be iPhones only in EU countries only. iPads will keep being locked into the Apple ecosystem fully.
This extends to third-party browser engines, which will also be an iPhone-only feature. iPad browsers will have to keep using Safari in the background.
NFC will however be unlocked for the entire European Economic Area, so a bit more than just EU.
Switching to the third-party developer agreement for app developers is a one-time change for the account. No going back to full Apple/App Store exclusivity.
Free/freemium apps are incompatible with the third-party app Core Technology Fee. If the app becomes popular it's €0.50 for each install over 1M. So, 2M installs and you have to pay Apple €50000 in fees regardless of how much you have actually made from it.
A better way would be a one-time fee for the still mandatory notarization, but that's not malicious compliance enough I guess.
-
@Atazhaia they have very clever, extremely expensive lawyers. I hope they advised them well with these "we're going to sue you over this obvious bullshit" decisions.
-
@Atazhaia said in In other news today...:
but that's not malicious compliance enough I guess
I'm starting to think it's not malicious compliance—on the part of Apple—it's a “wolf got fed and the goat remained whole” kind of solution: Apple didn't cede anything of value, EU committee got the letter of their law honored and the complainers got fucked over, which is perfectly fine with the EU committee. After all, the committee wants to show it's solving problems, not actually solve them. What would it do if it actually solved the problems‽
-
@Bulb Even if the EU is not happy and starts another case, Apple followed the letter of the law this time so there won't be any retroactive effects on a second case.

I am not sure I would ever qualify anything shat out by the Wail as “journalism”. Or the perpetrators as “journalists”.
I know some have skeptical views about the whole industry (and they’re not fundamentally wrong) but the Wail is a special breed of trash rag pretending to be something it isn’t.
