@DogsB And why is this news, and why isn't it a standard feature everywhere already? (I know that I can block unknown callers during certain hours of the day on my phone; I suppose I could just make that apply to all hours?)

The company confirmed, they have remedied all of the identified vulnerabilities in the system and utilize MOVEit for our file transfer needs. As soon as they became aware of this situation, they took prompt action to safeguard their ecosystem and assess the implications of any possible fallout. They have verified that there was no effect to our essential information technology systems or services, and that no data pertaining to either customers or partners was made public. Unfortunately, certain employees and contingent workers of Gen had some of their personal information compromised, which includes information such as their names, corporate email addresses, employee ID numbers, and in a few isolated instances, their home addresses and birth dates. They immediately began an investigation into the breadth of the problem, and consequently have informed the appropriate data protection agencies as well as our workers whose personal information may have been compromised.
Let me guess: they took the company statement and ran /we/they/ but forgot /our/their/.

Not sure. Might be the one with the puffins. They make a good stew but you’re not allowed to do that anymore.

@jinpa Is there something fundamentally wrong with that? What would be wrong is doing this without any redundancy or backup control systems (and without testing that the redundant/backup systems work). But, then again, having a single point of failure wouldn't exactly qualify as solid engineering either way.
That said, it being wireless seems like a bit of an special choice IMO.
-
@cvi said in In other news today...:
Is there something fundamentally wrong with that?
Yeah, I've been wondering the same ever since I heard that the first time. It's hardware that's pretty well tested, that has a bunch of easily customisable controls suited to controlling a moving object, and not a totally shitty overall design (ergonomics etc.). So that sounds a much better idea than cobbling together a few buttons and a 3D-printed panel that will have all sorts of usability issues.
Of course, using it without testing the reliability (or using a cheap Chinese knock-off controller), not having backup systems and what-not is -worthy, but that would be true of any system.
-
@cvi said in In other news today...:
@jinpa Is there something fundamentally wrong with that?
Not necessarily. It's more of a yellow alert rather than an error. But when something clearly did go seriously wrong, then it may be an indicator that he wasn't the soberest individual and that the accident may have reflected that.
There are other potential WTF's in the article, such as that he consciously decided not to include the most experienced people in the crew for marketing reasons.

XBox controllers are fairly common in military applications so it's not a horrible deal there. But I think I'd rather have a proper dual flight stick or something for a sub if I was gong for game controllers as a control surface. And preferrably some redundancy worked in as well. And if all else fails, some manual pumps for ballast tanks so you can surface in an emergency.

OMFG! Yes!

@DogsB would be awesome to see both get the shit beaten out of them.
Unfortunately, if this thing that'll never happen were to happen, it'd just be a huge ego-celebrating marketing wankery for both instead of a real fight.

Also, watching nerds fight is kinda boring. One of them has no weight to put behind punches and the other one looks like he'd run out of steam in half a minute.

The anthrax island was Gruinard, off the coast of Scotland. I don't think there are similar problems with Irish islands.
Also, don't believe whoever told you about puffin stew, at least not unless they are fresh puffins.

(Of course, you are not living in a country where it matters).Yeah, in my socialist hellhole, credit rating is calculated not from how much credit you've used, but how much you earn and currently have in debts. And if you failed payments hard enough to end up having the enforcement agency come collect more than once.

Failure to pay can be treated as a debt (and sold).
Of course, it's really scummy move and quite illegal in many places.

Failure to pay what? Subscription that I already cancelled?
I went through the process to a reasonable extent, if that didn't conclude in 'unsubscribing' I informed them by email that the deal is off. And that's it.Of course, it's really scummy move and quite illegal in many places.
What is scummy is preventing people from cancelling the deal with made up hoops and taking their money against their will.
I noticed that it's a US companies' specialty - treating customers like ATMs and pushovers.

Few people invest the time and effort to do that.

Nobody likes tourists let alone french tourists.
-
@DogsB Au contraire. Many people like bikini-clad tourists, especially French bikini-clad tourists. But other females (as the dingo appears to be) might be jealous.
On the other hand, it wasn't until she started to run away that the dog bit her. Maybe the dingo did like tourists. Especially ones that are pre-baked.

Dingos, like many predators, attack animals that flee. If it runs away, it must be prey.
