Oh, that's fascinating. I've just designed something that uses a MEMS oscillator because it needed to be tiny and ABRACON make really tiny oscillators. I'm amazed helium can diffuse into the package in quantities high enough to cause issues though (presumably the concentration in the air was still low enough that people didn't notice it).
I guess anything that's targeting hi-rel/functional safety should be wary of MEMS devices then.
Edit: I've used quite a lot of MEMS things and I've never heard of this before. Usually the thing you have to be wary of with MEMS as a designer is just mechanical shocks.

So, in other words, percussive maintenance?

I was thinking more of dropping the product, but slapping it around probably won't help either.

(from reddit -- have a look; there's loads of other fascinating failure stories there, too)

My Apple Watch is now completely useless, stuck on the Apple logo screen
Isn't that the whole purpose of the Apple watch?
-
@TimeBandit it's been forever since I heard the Windows XP OOBE song!

By the end of the video it's not going all that fast anymore. Temporary improvement at best.

@TimeBandit The ifixit link (and comments on the article) was even more interesting...

Actually, it said it didn't affect the old ones.

I foresee no problems. Deploy to production.

@TimeBandit Literal linux hardware?

@TimeBandit I don't wear a watch let alone a smart watch but that looks like it was made by someone who is less clumsy and has more patience than me.

@PleegWat It'll hatch into Big Bird! No other egg is long enough!

@PleegWat I feel like I can understand that headline perfectly well, despite not reading Dutch and only inferring the meaning of the first half of it from your post.

Apple will repair "vintage" devices
-
@TimeBandit You heard it here first, folks. Stuff made six years ago is now 'vintage'
-
@pie_flavor They should start using the winemaking definition of vintage then they can reduce that.

They're all just bad German dialects.

I'm actually not sure how to translate the second half to English.
-
@PleegWat According to Google it's "I was scared to pieces!" which is close enough to "It shivered me timbers!"

When I was in Germany, I was told Dutch isn't a language; it's a throat disease.

Like I said, "Ik schrok me kapot!" seems pretty darn comprehensible considering it's a language that I've never learned anything of.
-
@anotherusername That poor chicken's kapot must have been really schroked, after an egg like that, no doubt.

@hungrier At least they didn't adopt the policy like Photobucket.

@loopback0 Pricecuts only come up about a year later though:
EDIT: One thing they at least got right (emphasis mine):
At the time, then-CEO John Corpus said that it wasnât an easy decision and there was no way âto make 100 million global people happy.â Corpus is no longer with the company.

Okay, he obviously got just enough stuff from Game Of Thrones to find the phrase "Winter is coming." attractive. And then made that his own by replacing
winter
withsanctions
.He obviously neither did watch nor read (ha! as if!) far enough to realize that this phrase is meant as a warning about an impending disaster for everyone.

But why?
I hated it when SuSE did that. Gnome is pure cancer and KDE is infinitely better.
