WTH is wrong with ■■■■■■■?

Continuing the discussion from 🎉 The Funny Stuff Thread:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/belgium/11661312/Belgium-defies-France-with-euro-coin-marking-Napoleon-defeat.html (Ok - uncensored link here.)
Belgium on Monday began minting €2.50 coins marking the 200th anniversary of Napoleon's defeat of at the Battle of Waterloo, after France forced it to scrap a two-euro coin made for the same purpose.
Paris objected to the new Belgian coin, commemorating the French emperor's defeat by British and Prussian forces, earlier this year, saying it would create tensions at a time when Europe's unity is under threat. So they did it anyway...
But Belgium has managed to skirt the French protests using a rule that allows eurozone countries to unilaterally issue coins if they are in an irregular denomination - in this case, €2.50.
Bonus LOL's for finding a legitimate news story that gets censored on here...
So his story was censored because it has the totally offensive word B e l g i u m in it. WTH?! Is that just Discoevil or am I totally missing something here. Hmmm... let's try this:

Only B e l g i u m. Totally does not make sense. Must be Discoevil.
-
Must be Discoevil.
Not at all!Dicsource has a 'bad word' filter; here it contains Belgium, and that's it ;)
-
according to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:
Belgium (n) expletive
Belgium is the rudest word in the Universe, yet by a strange coincidence, also the name of a country on Earth. In the Secondary Phase, it is stated as "completely banned in all parts of the Galaxy, except in one part, where they don't know what it means, and in serious screenplays."
we're a civilized discussion board so obviously that word is banned.
-
Only B e l g i u m. Totally does not make sense. Must be Discoevil.
Censored because it is the single most offensive word in the universe.
-
with proper citation of course. :-P
-
Okay, I guessed that.
But...why? Why? WHY? WHY?
Has the country's name been taken for some incredible new decadent sexual act?@accalia said:

Oh.
Well that's a totally lame-assed reason.
-
See upthread ;)
-
-
But...why? Why? WHY? WHY?
also @PJH found it funny and hasn't seen fit to remove it from the ban list. IIRC b elgiu m is also on the ban list.
... yup it is.
-
Well that's a totally lame-assed reason.
well according to some the population here is totally lame ass so i think it's a fair comparison. ;-)
-
It seems to me that Belgian should be censored, too; they're highly offensive.
-

Well, since were being didacting and banning Belgium and b elgiu m, therefore we can't ban Belgian...it's not the rudest word in the universe. No "u".
-
I find it hilarious that you've been here this long and haven't yet discovered that.
-
Well, I kind of normally read ■■■■■■■ censored words by by their ■■■■■■ context and move on. It's possible that I missed it one or more times because of that.
Basically, I can't ■■■■■■■ believe they would do a ■■■■■■ thing like list the name of an EU country, even if it is a joke in Adam's fabulous ■■■■■■■ book. (Which I loved by the way, don't read too much into my ■■■■■■■ statement.)
-
here it contains Belgium, and that's it ;)
It also contains elgiu because we were testing to see if they anchored their regexes.Unfortunately, they did, or we would be writing things like belgium
-
I can't ■■■■■■■ believe they would do a ■■■■■■ thing
"They" who? The word list, short as it is, is very much a TDWTF-specific thing. I'm not sure what the Discourse default is, but the TDWTF list would be empty, but for @PJH thinking (and the rest of the community agreeing) that it is amusing.
-
Unfortunately, they did, or we would be writing things like b■■■■■m
and abusing the clbuttic results of that fail.
-
It's especially amusing when a onebox breaks because they triple-escaped belgium.
-
:flag: ??
-
It's especially amusing when a onebox breaks
Yeah, it's like that type of humor where the same thing keeps happening over and over-- and like it starts funny, then stops being funny, then because it keeps happening becomes funny again.
Punchline: Discourse!
-
"The Ubiquitous They, the conspirators from whom all evil derives."
Come on, fellow denizen, keep up.
-
-
Discourse introduced a (presumably swearword) filter, into core no less (as opposed to a plugin.)
I decided it was fit to be tested, so since we'd recently been discussing H2G2 at the time it was suggested to stick (just)
belgium
(andelgui
) into it to see how effective it was.Not very was the answer, and it's not improved much since. Despite one of the things that would be happening to it would be its removal from core.
And the filter hasn't been changed since. In part because it's amusing (FSVO) when it does screw things up like my post that you quoted, and because we get to have this topic discussed occasionally. Again.
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/the-likes-thread/1000/29070?u=pjh is where it started.
-
it was suggested
As resident of belgium I volunteered the good name of my country as a testing subject for the greater good.
-
We had a visitor from belgium here yesterday. He looked a bit square to me.
-
And here I thought it was done simply because it was funny because of the H2G2 thing, rather than anything else.
After all, we do a lot of things for some definition of fun around here...
-
And here I thought it was done simply because it was funny
but there is such deeper meaning behind it ...
-
As resident of ■■■■■■■ I volunteered the good name of my country as a testing subject for the greater good.
It just really struck me as odd. Why pick on grand old Belgium? The person who did the post I linked from was clearly also bemused.
Then @accalia came up with the HG2G reference.
I'd never seen it before that I can recall. As I noted above, I often context-read blocked words because it takes time to look behind the curtain; and often when you do you find out someone just pasted ■■■■■■■ blocks anyway. So if I ever ran across
Belgium
before I didn't pickup on it. Especially since words like ■■■■ and ■■■■ and ■■■■ and ■■■■ and etc. aren't listed (don't waste your time looking...I pasted blocks). As long as it wasn't meant as a smear...and it clearly wasn't, since @PJH volunteered it.
I decided it was fit to be tested, so since we'd recently been discussing H2G2 at the time it was suggested to stick (just) belgium (and elgui) into it to see how effective it was.
Not very was the answer, and it's not improved much since. Despite one of the things that would be happening to it would be its removal from core.
As all such filters are ineffective, really. There are only approximately 9,219,381,647 ways around them if people are determined to be expressive.
Among other weaknesses, it is fine with
Belgium
in the title; apparently I can cuss in titles all I want. (I had to paste blocks to get the right effect.)So now that I understand the history...I guess I have no more to say.
-
often when you do you find out someone just pasted ■■■■■■■ blocks anyway
/me raises her hand
yeah i do that a lot of the time when i want to self censor and don't feel like using one of my usual replacements.
of course what I invariably do is type belgium then cut and past the entities from the preview window until they are the word length i want....
-

Handy, isn't it?
-
Handy, isn't it?
once you know about it yes.
it also helps that for the most part our belgian members seem amused at the censoring, or at least are indifferent about it.
-
I'd never seen it before that I can recall
As discussed before, it wasn't in the original UK version of HG2G. The joke there was about use of the word "fuck" in a serious screenplay, but the US audience was deemed too sensitive, so it was changed to belgium and the line about it being offensive in the rest of the Galaxy was added

PFFT.
Everyone who played Tyrian knows about Alt254
-
huh.... that's handy. i confess i don't know as many alt codes as i should.
-
PFFT.Everyone who played Tyrian knows about Alt254
Well, I didn't play that.
I never bothered to memorize all those zillions of Alt codes; I just use charmap or insert symbol. The problem is that I use them so rarely there never was a point...and I have a poor memory for that kind of thing anyway.
(On the occasions when I actually looked up a code or two, I then didn't use them again for three months...by which time I couldn't remember them anymore. So I kind of gave it up.)
-
So if I ever ran across
Belgium
before I didn't pickup on it.
Wait, censoring doesn't work in code blocks? That's ..... hardly surprising at this point.
-
A rollercoaster gives you the illusion of danger without any danger.
Similarly, Discourse gives you the illusion of functional software.

That's a very fitting analogy.

As all such filters are ineffective, really.
Well we all know that, or should. In the spirit of testing Discourse I thought this was a new feature we could play with to see exactly how ineffective.
With predictable results.
A rollercoaster gives you the illusion of danger without any danger.

Alton Towers
Ummm...yeah. Roller coasters are supposed to give you the illusion of danger. But they are industrial equipment--lots of energy involved--and bad things can happen if there's any kind of problem.
Sooo...how did they manage to ram a car full of people into an empty car? Failure of the braking system? Empty car left in wrong place?
-
I believe at some point @sam or @riking expressed surprise that this feature was even used here, expecting this to be the last place to use it.
-
Empty car left in wrong place?
This is what I've heard from what I've bothered to follow of it. Quick search produces:
Ms Underwood described a carriage carrying passengers crashing in to another [empty one] that was stationary at the top of the ride.
-
I believe at some point @sam or @riking expressed surprise that this feature was even used here, expecting this to be the last place to use it.
It was put in at the request of one of their clients. Since they put it in core instead of a plugin, all of them got it.
They give us new toys to play with, what do they expect? Granted that one wasn't announced, and I just happened to discover it, but still...
-
Granted that one wasn't announced
I know it was discussed on meta.d and people from here pointed out issues having to do with the clbuttic issue of not being careful with anchors.
It looks like that was logged as a bug rather than where censoring came from:
https://meta.discourse.org/t/word-censor-butt-vs-button/20968Ah, think I found the original request

They must not have realized how it was used.
