@TimeBandit bug
Sure that wasn’t intentional, right?

@topspin Hanlon's razor.

Decades of anticompetitive behavior and convictions say otherwise.

@topspin and Windows 10 being mind numbingly broken for the stupidest ways is a new thing?

10any version being mind numbingly broken for the stupidest ways is a new thing?FTFY
-
@TimeBandit that makes it sound like Windows 10 is no worse than older ones. Hard disagree - it's much, much worse.
-
@Gustav Windows 2000 wasn't too bad
-
@TimeBandit can't break in weird ways if you refuse to run programs altogether

Status: I’ve been subjected to having to deal with Windows again for the last hour. Can’t believe how incredibly shitty this OS still is.
I could probably list two dozen WTFs if I had written everything down, but it’s been so frustrating I don’t remember everything. So here’s the executive summary of only half of it:
- Trying to create a new user, I type the german equivalent of “create user account” into the start menu. It shows one local result and a bunch of bing shit. I click the one it offers and it opens some crap about customizing the UAC alert levels. Just this single window, no “back” button or anything to get to an overview of settings.
- So instead I try something else to open the settings app. Well, that prominently shows shit to log into OneDrive or to log in to something to get “awards”, as well as a few other things. “Accounts” only shows crap about email accounts or how to log in with “Windows Hello”, but not how to add a user. Ten years after they fucked everything up with Windows 8, they still don’t have a useable settings app
- Ok, close all this shit again and manually open Control Panel instead. Click User Accounts and it looks like the only available options are “change account type” and “remove account”, but I guess those are just shortcuts and when you carefully click the correct pixels of the headline you get to where you can add a user account. Success!
- Log in to the new account. Disable half a dozen “send shit to Microsoft” options. Now, I don’t want an “advertising ID” from the OS, die in a fire! “Preparing for first use. This can take several minute. Leave everything to us. Windows is always up to date to keep you secure on the web.” Oh boy, does it take several minutes.
- It’s finally logged in and the task bar is cramped full with bullshit weather widgets and Cortana search and even some icon representing the featured
adsearch result inside of the search bar. Click through everything to remove the shit, just the search bar doesn’t want to go away. Ohhhh, unlike the other menu options that you click to remove the checkmark, this is actually basically a radio button (which looks the same as the checkmarks), so you have to click a different entry to uncheck it. - It opens context menus in the wrong direction by default. Not because the majority of people have suddenly turned left-handed, no, because they think that’s what right-handed people want when they use a desktop OS with a stylus. Which, to first order approximation, nobody has ever done. Not in 2013, not a decade later.
- Copy a folder with 5 files, 600kb, from an usb thumb drive: 15 seconds.
- use the build in zip tool to unzip a 20MB zip file, another 20 seconds.
Fuck. Kill me already.

@Rhywden well, that’s not what showed up for me, and I don’t know how you make that show up. So .

Nutz to you, too, Anders. Kount on it!

That's Win 11.
On Win 10 I think it's Settings -> Accounts -> Family and other users.
-
@loopback0 Yes, followed by " Add someone else to this PC". But the Settings options aren't alphabetized or arranged in any other logical order, because why would they be, so you have to scan through all of them until you spot "Accounts".
-
@HardwareGeek there's the really useful search in Settings which (on 11 at least) returns the right result for "add other user" but doesn't return anything for "add user"

Amazing.

Amazing..... Holy shit....
You'd think they'd index action buttons too, but....
Edit: Heeyyyy.... this isn't the Windows 11 thread!
-
@topspin YMMV, I guess:
Don't get me wrong, Settings in Windows 8/10/11 are a mess and the developers don't seem to be in any hurry to improve things. Right now they're too busy cramming Bing AI into every nook and cranny. :(

@Parody said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Bing AI
How fucking HARD can it be to not fuck up a few kilobytes of search data?!?!!?!
-

Seems it works in 10 but not 11

Pat for the course.

Your search results are right where you left them.
Except there's a blank panel over them.
You have one job, Start Menu.
Edit: I'm now noticing it's completely blank including the tabs on top.
Pressing tab a bunch of tabs trying to get autocomplete to work again made the UI flash briefly a bunch of times. Seriously, how effing broken can this more possibly be?

When even @Tsaukpaetra is tired of your stuff being broken, you know you really should do better.

Do you need @Zerosquare to reboot you?
-
@HardwareGeek At this point I'd like to be put into hibernation, or at least sleep.
Being awake is annoying. I'd don't think I need to tell you of all people this.

*closes Zecc's lid*

@Carnage said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
@Mason_Wheeler there are actually quite a lot of psychopaths in society. The higher you go in leadership positions the greater the density of those traits.
The great majority of people with those traits are productive and necessary parts of society.I disagree that they're necessary. They just end up taking positions that would otherwise be filled by non-psychopaths.
I agree that they can be productive and occupy positions that are necessary parts of society. A subtle difference.

Today we've forgotten how to consistently recognize the same mouse and keyboard we've been working with for six months. Yay Windohs.

Bonus fun times for when the usb stack keeps breaking every few minutes and loses connection with mouse/keyboard for a second or two.
-
@boomzilla Have you looked for amyloid plaques near the CPU? Your computer may have caught Alzheimer's due to the abuse by that operating ystem.
-
Or it could just be good old CRS syndrome.

Or it could just be lousy wireless. I hate wireless mice/keyboards.
-
@dcon I don't mind wireless mice (except for their rate of consuming AAA batteries, and the failure of switches/encoders common to all mice), but I've had bad luck with wireless keyboards.
-
@Zerosquare said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

Well, that's too vernacular a name for it.
Use the better, official, wording:
Alzheimer's disease.
ICD 10 code: G30.

W10 is eight years old already?
Damn.
-
@loopback0 Windows 7 is now as old as XP was when 10 released.

Status: unsupported. Probably because they're using some kind of string matching and this computer is slightly special.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Or the authors are idiots and forgot to use a compatibility manifest so GetVersion is reporting the minimal system.
-
@dcon Maybe they used Java and its wonky Windows 9 detection.
-
-
@TimeBandit well, Microsoft will use the excuse of: we didn't break Chrome, Chrome was just using an unsupported method and we stop apps from overriding user preferences. Go through the supported means!
: Well, what's the supported method?
: No idea, it changes constantly.
: And why do you keep resetting things to MS apps after every update?
: Fuck you, use Edge!
