@Placeholder I'm surprised your work PC still has Suggested installed. At the very least they could have taken away its notification privileges.

Windows 10, the fuck?
TWO WHOLE CORES?
-
@Arantor The real question is, how did you get Firefox to consume only 1.7%?

Yes, apparently I do things differently than everyone else.
Once I see what I need to see and do what I need to do, I move on. I seldom have more than 6-7 tabs open at the same time and VERY rarely more than 10.
But it still doesn't explain why there are 13 instances of Firefox for 4 tabs. But, having used Firefox since version 0.8, I have come to expect the unexpected.

HP Smart App is not smart at all and i hate that Microsoft makes no distinction between updating system drivers to keep them up to dat and pushing "assistant applications" that go along side hardware.
NO i do NOT want HP Smart App. It is useless. Stop Pushing it to me. NO i do NOT want the Logi app either. I have no reason to convigure my unprogrammable keyb or mourse and i wont be adding anything to the unifyign receiver ever.. so stop asking if i want to install it! (at least Logi actually asks if i want it..... it just can't take no for an answer)
I'm one app away from yeeting Windows entirely, and honestly I might just do it anyway and yeet the vinyl cutter instead. I'm sure i can get one that natively talks to a linux app with a little research.....

yes, but it doesnt' ACCEPT gcode or present itself as a non proprietary interface because fuck the crafters that want to use you rprodut. they must also use your software that advertizes paid upgrades to everything when all i want to fucking do is cut out SVGs i've designed in inkscape..... or "borrowed" from the internet to put in t-shirts because vector art of foxes is hard....

How about a configuration that slows you down when you exceed a certain amount of typos per minute?

The good spellaring of “configure my unprogrammable keyboard or mouse” courtesy of autocarrot. As in, “dafuq do I need a stupid app for these whehn there is nothing extended about their functionality”

configure. lack of caffeine makes a foxxo typo a lot
as for configuring a keyb..... yeah. no need to configure anything at all.

But you might want the OS to register a double click if you press the middle mouse button!
I think the graphics card (amd) was the only device with an auto-installed helper app on my new windows box last month. The keyboard (corsair), mouse (logitech), and fancy left-hand controller (azeron) did not trigger automatic installation of helper software.

probablyshould be uninstalled. Doing that by itself is extra convenience. As far as I recall I've used it exactly once per keyboard to change the backlight to a saner value. Those are then stored in the keyboard, so it doesn't need the app anymore and/or can be moved to a machine with an OS iCue does not support.

Status: Had to step away for a bit. Got back, and the fucking computer forgot how to use my main monitor again. Like...Windows thinks it's displaying stuff, but nothing is getting to the monitor. Usually I can unplug the dock, plug it back in, and it's back (though all my window positions are fucked).
Today, it took several iterations. By the time it was working again, something wonky was going on with my running VM. It wouldn't display anything.
Eventually, I notice that on my secondary monitor, there's...stuff...up in the left hand corner. It was like a phantom task bar. There was the Windows button at the top and then the bar for VMWare right below it. But no clock or anything and the rest of that side of the monitor was transparent.
Time to turn it off and on again, obviously.

Oh, iCue? Yeah, that's pretty terrible and it doesn't store the settings for my CPU cooler on the device itself. After every reboot, it's back to the cycling rainbow vomit until iCue loads the (all RGB off, damnit!) profile back again...

Is it a Targus dock? I've had issues like that with mine, that I didn't have with the previous Dell one. However, the Dell one had other issues, so it's mostly a wash
-
@HardwareGeek It wouldn't work for the main water cooler pump unit. As I said, that defaults to being Made in Technicolor™ without any intervention, and the lighting is integrated into a unit that I very much want to be powered when the machine is on.
Otherwise a very good cooler, but makes spontaneous Windows Update reboots very obvious.

No, it's a Dell dock (as supplied by my company).
-
I wasn't quite quick enough taking screenshots of Task Manager showing fucking Telemetry consuming 100% of my CPU this evening.
-
@boomzilla My dock will pretty consistently forget that it's a dock with monitors attached after about 10s of being disconnected from a computer (or the computer going to sleep), and revert to an "unrecognized USB device". But luckily, it comes with a nice prominent power button that doesn't send a power signal to the connected computer, but does turn the dock on and off for easy power cycling
-
@hungrier My Wavlink dock occasionally needs it's USB-C cable to be unplugged after a whole weekend of the laptop being asleep. This causes Windows to forget all my window positions and causes minor problems for applications that expect 100% network connectivity (Ethernet is plugged into the dock), but it's otherwise uneventful.

My CPU cooler doesn't store the profile on it either - but my case doesn't have a window in it so I can't see the RGB disco and haven't turned it off.

Soon, also as common consumer, will be able to pay for Windows security updates.
Toby fair, it is "extended support" which was previously available for enterprises only.
But once the step has been performed, ...

I solved all of these issues by having a case that is all metal. The blinkenlights can blinken all they want, they have no power here.
I've performed enough blood sacrifices to the computer gods through the decades to not want that rainbow vomit in my computer.Although, the mechanical keyboard I take to work at clients when they have shitty keyboards is specifically configured to be as blinkenlighty annoying as possible. But that is just me being a horrible human being, not actually me liking the blinkenlights.

Alas, mine has a big glass side panel. (I could replace it, except ) It is otherwise a very good case that is both properly quiet and reconfigurable so I didn't need to fabricobble things to make all the hardware fit. Unlike with my previous case...

Yeah, my case is getting long in the tooth, since it had a large rack for 3.5" hdds that I had to cut out to make room for my latest GPU. They ave gotten ridiculously large these days.
