A certain Korean corporation makes TVs with Tizen OS. Some of them are 4k. Or are they?
Rumor has it, that's a bit of "misunderstanding". The display panels are indeed 4k. The problem is with the OS. These rumors tell the story of X server being configured to use only FullHD (1920x1080) resolution, which is then upscaled to 4k. Why? That might have something to do with certain enlightened libraries being too slow to handle 4k. The story goes of the interface being so slow, that simple navigation becomes a pain. The fun begins when playing 4k content, which gets downscaled to FullHD, which is then upscaled to 4k.
Two questions arise:
- Is the final, shipped product configured that way?
- Is everything using X, or is something natively drawn in 4k?
Bonus question:
- What's the probability of a buyer having a RS232->minijack cable accidentally finding this out and what the PR mess would be?
Maybe someday we'll know...
-

Or just playing a 4k video with lots of small details to test their fancy new TV, noticing it looks just like the same video in 1080p, and investigating further.

Have any studies even been made on what size TV you need to actually be able to tell tell the difference?
And I'm not talking about coming in close and counting the pixels. I'm talking regular viewing distance for the tested screen size.

"4k content, which gets downscaled to FullHD, which is then upscaled to 4k"
That sure sounds like something Samsung would do, but I'm a bit biased because I hate them expect incompetence.
-
And @NeighborhoodButcher isn't? Pretty sure he got his name by killing some
incompetent managernonexistant person for utter incompetence :)Also, rhetorical question time... Is anything that Tizen/Enlightened touches not complete and utter shite?

Dunno. Their phones are fine.
Once you gut the software and install Cyanogenmod on them, that is.
-
I'd rather go back to using a dumb phone forever than reward them for their incompemalic by purchasing a device (even to gut it and install a new OS).

I'm always astounded by companies which have great hardware and shitty software. Where does this disconnect come from?
-
I don't find anything wrong with the software on the Galaxy S5.
Older versions may have been a different matter though.

Eh, it's still shitty compared to stock Android. Nowhere near as bad as before, but I can't stand even new TouchWiz

Unless, of course, they push an OTA update to your S3 that breaks USB and installs a bootloader that intentionally hard bricks your phone if you try to flash something like ClockworkMod on it.

Japan, usually.

Asus is probably one of the worst offenders. Their products could be so much better if they spent just 1% of their yearly profits on hiring good programmers AND translators who actually speak English.

/me did not know that Blakey was running Tizen OS.

You really trolled me with your first sentence. It triggered memories of obscure bugs in an Android app I developed that only appeared on Samsung devices. How can you fuck up your UI customizations so badly that the API does not work as documented anymore?

I remember reading an article years ago that claimed that while people say what they want is higher definition, what they actually turn out to want is a bigger screen. IIRC this was tested by having people view normal and HD content (without telling them which was which) on small and large screens, and then having them rate the quality. As I recall, HD content on a small screen on average got a lower rating than normal content on a big screen — conclusion: what people want isn’t what they think they want. But then, we knew that already, didn’t we?

I have a Nexus 10, with a whopping 2560x1600 pixels, yet definitely prefer to watch movies on my 1366x768 laptop because it's bigger.
-
I has been unofficially confirmed that the shipped product is indeed running FullHD X server which gets upscaled.
Also, another reason for such
lying to the customers which should result in a lawsuitmisunderstanding is EFL, but not its speed this time. Because of EFL layouts being immutable (which the author said was a lie, despite reality), the user interface gets all messed up in higher resolutions. From things misaligning everywhere, to interface taking only a quarter of the screen.

That Xiaomi Mi TV looks nice and it is cheap, should I buy it?

Does it scale back up with interpolation or does it just make each individual pixel in the 1920×1080 screen sixteen times sharper?

I found this:

I don't find anything wrong with the software on the Galaxy S5.
I'd rather have an LG than a Samsung. And yes, I've used both.

Having gone from a Note II to an LG G3, I can say the GPU is NOT an improvement when gaming. Maybe it's because of so many pixels, I don't know, but the G3 is significantly less snappy in demanding games like Farmville 2.
Also, shut up. On mobile, it's not the same game as on facebook, and, the inducement to spend money aside, it's kind of like transport tycoon without the transport network, and since I have yet to see a good Tactics game like FFTA or something, it's the "best" long-term game I've found for a minute or two here or there while waiting for something else.

That has nothing to do with the OS on each device. Samsung forks and bloats Android so much, it's ridiculous.

And that has what to do with LG vs. Samsung?

Oh, Samsung bloated Android so much it plays games faster? What a fascinating world view you have!
-

Nothing. It has everything to do with preëmpting comments about my choice of games on my phone.

I never once mentioned games. In fact, gaming is not a concern on my phone. That's what computers, consoles, and tablets (in a pinch) are for.

It's a concern on a great many peoples' phones. The thing I find curious about it is that the types of games that work best on the different devices seem to be different. Form factors and modes of interaction really matter, as does availability (phones tend to be carried round the whole time, much more so than tablets, and computers and consoles are things people use specifically).

special location
Pretty much the only place I play games on my phone is when on the toilet.

One of the Lollipop features I was anticipating the most was "Priority Notifications". When Lollipop eventually hit my S4, I followed all the online demos and couldn't find the feature. It turns out that TouchWiz morphed Priority Notifications into Do Not Disturb mode, and in doing so, made it 1/100th as useful.

So you, uh... stare at the cities growing?

No, you manually pick up and drop off the resources. Gotta do something to have busywork, it is a mobile F2P game.

After reading this, I started to look into hacking Sammy TVs. I didn't know that you could write custom apps for them, and that others had broken out of the app to make some modifications. I guess it's not good enough to have a full custom OS going.
So does this mean that my Sammy TV runs an X server all of the time, presumably using an overlay to display whatever is coming from the input in full screen? I never use that "Smart Hub" BS, and so I thought that the OS was not running at all until someone went into that mode...
-
Don't we have someone who writes TV apps for a living here?
Was it @eldelshell?
-
Yep, in some the TV is basically a native app. I can't assess this is true for all manufacturers, but Sammy and LG do. Hell, 2008 Panasonic's were a Linux kiosk.
Anyway, most of my time is spent two abstraction levels above this part which is pretty much a black box.
And just in case you decide to publish an app, Apple's certification process is a walk in the park compared with some manufacturers.

Stop
BITCHcomplaining. You do not need 4K. You do not even know what is it. It is 4K and it works, efl also works as it is documented. Your company does not even have 0.001% market share, do you? So stop teaching smarter people than you.
-
You do not need 4K.
So?
@WhiteKnight said:You do not even know what is it.
~4,000 pixels horizontally.
@WhiteKnight said:It is 4K and it works
1080p upscaled to 4k isn't 4k.
@WhiteKnight said:Your company does not even have 0.001% market share, do you?
Irrelevant.

Oh… you're one of them…

I think you guys are whooshing on a parody post.

I checked his post history before replying; it's short, but enough to make me think that's not a parody
