The Quixotic Ideas Thread

adequate level of detail
subjective
helps in discussing and drawing useful conclusions about reality
which most civics and economists use it for
I guess you only find the most useless debates out there
I haven't watched CNN, MSNBC, FOX in a long time, is that where you're getting all your information from?
-
You mean like the hockey stick being used primarily for political parties to try to control based on their investments who will make the most money, while using the public like a puppet?
Because, politicians never use models for personal gain...
Whereas sustainable green energy is overlooked, in lieu of unsustainable green energy (because that's whose back is being scratched), such that we'll never have an actual solution?
Your point being? …
I haven't watched CNN, MSNBC, FOX in a long time, is that where you're getting all your information from?
…you know what, I don't even care what your point is anymore.
-
…you know what, I don't even care what your point is anymore.
Because all you've done is arbitrarily thrown out models and definitions you've found not useful simply because they've been misused.
This means that you can't even understand my point, because you can't agree on any common ground at all.
Which goes back to my other point earlier, why do you even bother getting in these conversations, when you've disallowed formal debate?
Your point being? …
That you don't just throw out models because some uninformed people misuse them. Otherwise you make it impossible to even understand each other or reasons why people think the way they do.
Your kind of logic, makes it impossible for people to come to common ground.
No wonder polarization is the trend.
-
Translating English to lojban is harder than translating lojban to English because the program has to understand the English grammar, which is pretty damn confusing and ambiguous. lojban has a grammar specifically made to be simple, so translating the other way is a lot easier. It's basically mad libs.
-
Yeah, I don't care.
-
I would write a witty comeback, but you're trying to be reasonable so that would make me feel bad... Dammit conscience, this is WTDWTF, you have no place here!
I still think the tinfoily libertarian stuff is out there though.
-
We don't even seem to agree on what we're discussing here, so it's probably better to end our discussion. I wasn't disallowing formal discussion, I was trying to have a formal discussion about the usefulness of a certain model. Also, I'm convinced that exactly those oversimplified models cause the polarization you're talking about.
-
We don't even seem to agree on what we're discussing here
This seems to be the norm this morning.
-
That's actually one of the reasons Libertarianism will never have widespread adoption.
I'm note sure I've ever met two Libertarians who can agree on what Libertarianism acually is...
-
Crazier than anarchists?
Anarchists aren't necessarily crazy, they just get a lot of bad press...
-
That doesn't even make sense.
You missed a coupld of words off the end...

I'm not sure...

What.... is your favourite colour?
-
Man...
I don't even fucking care anymore.
I can't measure color, it's just so fucking arbitrary.
With so many people colorblind, and not knowing if other people see color the same way I do, I doubt the usefulness of color as a tool.
I mean how can you measure something so complex as a color? It's wavelength maybe, but not the abstract concept of the perception of color and what that means to me.
-

Puce means you're going to die alone and afraid in a ditch.
-
Does white mean everything, since that's all the colors?
-
White means you're going to die alone and afraid in a ditch.

Wait, this fortune teller machine is broken.... it keeps saying the same thing. - Final Destination 32

Final Destination 32
Man, that series really went to shit somewhere around Final Destination 19...
-
What.... is your favourite colour?
OOH! i know this! That would be the number four. i love how savoury it is with those bright overtones of a C major chord and the subtle hint of petrichor.
-
You missed a coupld of words off the end...
I originally wanted to write TDEMSYR, then decided to leave out the last two words in an attempt to have a constructive discussion/Civilized Discourse™. I was young and naive.

But then I've found out their voice configuration files are written in Prolog.
It looks like I forgot a programming langugage.

12 years != decades
...eh, arguable. 12 years > 1 decade

Real anarchists, or the ones who want to solve problems with government with more government?
-
INB4 @boomzilla starting another renewable energy/climate change flamewar.
It's not my fault you guys are wrong about stuff.

+1 because you sound exactly like your sock puppet right now. ;)

Real anarchists, or the ones who want to solve problems with government with more government?
People who do that and call themselves anarchist are TRWTF

Does anyone who seriously cares about optimizing runtime performance not write in C these days?
If they also care about avoiding things like buffer overruns, they should be writing in Ada.

Or Eiffel.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as piracy, is in fact, unauthorized copying, or as I've recently taken to calling it, unauthorized sharing. Piracy is not the act of obtaining an unauthorized copy of a copyrighted work, but rather robbery or criminal violence at sea.
You are technically correct, but that usage of the word is already mainstream. You'd have better luck convincing people that "gay" should only be used as a synonym for "happy".
-
When people just start using a word without any concern about what it actually means, I think that's a load of aubergines.

Shepard Smith: Ron Paul. Ron Paul: [ gawkishly ] Damn right! Shepard Smith: You were, uh, painted into a corner last week when you were asked a very pointed hypothetical question about liberty. So let's do that again! Ron Paul: G-g-great! Shepard Smith: Let's pretend you are a representative of the federal government walking down the street. You see a house on fire. Do you act? Ron Paul: [ shaking his head frantically ] Nooo!! That's none of my business! Shepard Smith: What if... the house is full of puppies? Puppies with their noses pressed against the glass. Do you act then? Ron Paul: No! That is NOT my place! Shepard Smith: What if... the puppies were making this noise: [ he moans like a helpless puppy ] And they're all wearing bows. What would you do? Ron Paul: I'd let the puppies BURN! I am a PURIST! The puppies should DIE!! Shepard Smith: Well... Ron Paul, you stuck to your guns! Your weird, old guns!

Aww. You got Markdown all over your quotation...
-
If they also care about avoiding things like buffer overruns, they should be writing in
a language that isn't so terrible that it needs ASLR to be secure.
-

Nah - that's highlight.js if you don't override whatever it thinks you've written. In this case it thinks it's
vbnet
.nohighlight
doesn't seem to do what it should on here, so I usually go fordiff
-
I tend to use text to get rid of highlighting in code blocks. var a = "grapes"; see?
-
Nobody listen when I say that if there is a driving license, and special version for truck and other, we should also have computer-usage license. And a computer-police to enforce them : making a database with more than one table in Excel is a felony.
Good luck with that.

Maybe he wants to take his millions as a discount off the interest-accumulated value of the several billion dollars of American assets Cuba seized during the revolution.

Presumable there's more in their Facebook page, but it's not accessible to people not on Facebook, so screw that.

I've never said that we don't cause changes in the climate.

I think this needs to be discussed a little more
